Got to admit Timothy Dalton is my favourite Bond but personally I prefer the Living Daylights. I often wonder what A View To A Kill would of been like if Dalton had played it instead of Moore. Such a shame he didn't do more films.
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
AVTAK would of had a reworked script, Zorin and May Day would of been more of a threat, and Tanya Roberts’s feisty and scrappy independent woman would of suited Dalton’s brooding Bond a lot better.

I also wonder what goldeneye would have been like with Dalton in the role. I too didn't appreciate him at the time. I think people didn't because he was so different from Roger Moore.
@ScoundrelDaysSon2 жыл бұрын
I love Moore as Bond, he's probably my favourite, but by God Dalton is mesmerising. Living Daylights has it all! The best Bond song, for one. A layered script. Humour, and a broad tone, but that is tethered to a grittier, more realistic 'A' plot. Dalton playing Bond utterly spectacularly. There is one thing, though, that is, seemingly, overlooked; it is utterly beautiful. The cinematography is spectacular - beautifully composed shots, fabulous lighting, a conslcrete sense of place at all times, action sequences are directed, and edited, with pace but without compromising the ability of the audience to follow said action, it looks sumptuous and alive, each locale is vividly rendered in splashes of gorgeous colour (compare this to a good chunk of more modern spy thrillers that are graded to a blue/gray wash), characters are given space, dialogue is sharp, the camera isn't afraid of treating the action as a drama when necessary. A quick Google tells me that the direction in this film gets little mention online and it is such a shame because it is probably one of the very best directed Bond films out there, with some really fantastic action sequences that look utterly 'real' . Barring a corny moment or two, and John Barry's saccharine 'love' motif (whilst I can see why Barry leaned into this given that this film is presenting a very real romantic attraction rather than the more typical Bond affair, it is simply used too frequently, and is tonally off), it is a close to perfect as the franchise has ever managed. It's right up there with Live and Let Die, Skyfall, and From Russia with Love. A really high watermark.

My favorite Bond, he had it all, the appearance, the brutality, the courage, the intelligence, the charm and the charisma. As we all know, Dalton pored over Fleming's books to prepare for the role, I love Roger Moore in A View to a Kill, but, Octopussy was the perfect ending for him and I would prefer AVTAK to be the first movie in Dalton's non-existent trilogy, everything in the script suited him better, he deserved so much more.

If the stupid litigation hadn't lasted 6 yrs, Dalton would've done at least 3 more surely, and the 3 would've been as good as the 2 he did, before retiring by the time he turned 50. This would put him on equal pedestral with Connery and Craig in the race to for the competition of the best Bond of all.
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
Two more after Licence to Kill would of endeared him to audiences. His tenure should of gone this way.., A View to a Kill 1985 (Sir Roger finishes up with Octopussy) The Living Daylights 1987 Licence to Kill 1989 The Property of a Lady aka Risico 1991 (The Alfonse Ruggiero script, but improved upon.) Reunion with Death aka Nobody Lives Forever 1993 (Dalton’s swansong and his most human performance) Or.... For Your Eyes Only (Never Say Never Again doesn’t happen) A View to a Kill The Living Daylights Licence to Kill Property of a Lady Then we get a three year break and Brosnan comes in with GoldenEye.
@AnkitSingh-pz2ju3 жыл бұрын
@@LexingtonDeville984 it should've gone this way. But Dalton has also provided the staple that 35-40 is the best age to begin with as Bond. While Brosnan I believe was 43 when GOLDENEYE was released and as years passed by the time DIE ANOTHER DAY was released, he had proven himself to be less believable despite his Bond outings taking place in the most contemporary times possible. Most people say Brosnan got the role only to placate him for not being given the role earlier in TLD where Dalton was kept as backup choice in case Brosnan couldn't cancel his contract with REMINGTON STEELE. But the gamble paid off, I don't think Brosnan would look convincing as a logic using and when necessary defiant and deadly 007. Actually he never did. People are even of the opinion that GOLDENEYE may've revitalized the series, Sean Bean's Alec Trevelyan overshadowed Brosnan's Bond.
@christopherjensen50073 жыл бұрын
100 percent AGREE with you! Dalton IS Bond!
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
@@AnkitSingh-pz2ju Agreed. Sean Bean was a decent villain. But he wasn’t always the first choice. The character in the early draft was originally created as Augustus Trevelyan, and was a former head of MI6 who defected to Russia during the Cold War, where he became head of the KGB and approved every KGB murder before retiring. His main plan was to finance his terror network via wire theft transfers from the World Trade Center and use the Tempest satellites to erase the proof of the theft and destroy New York City. Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman were the main names linked to the role, but both turned it down because they were fed up of being typecast as bad guys. Imagine one of them exchanging dialogue with Dalton’s Bond.
@AnkitSingh-pz2ju3 жыл бұрын
@@LexingtonDeville984 if it was Sir Anthony Hopkins against Dalton, it would've been the most tense standoff between Bond and the villain since GOLDFINGER. Nevertheless, Bean was great with both the physicality and dialogue delivery he was assigned.

You can thank a convicted fraudster named Giancarlo Paretti for Dalton not having another two Bond outings. Dalton’s third entered pre-production in 1990, the script was ready, and filming was going to take place in Scotland, Tokyo and Hong Kong. But Paretti had merged MGM with a French company to create MGM-Pathe and then tried to sell the broadcasting rights to the Bond series at cut-rate price. Danjaq (the company who own the rights to the series) were livid and sued MGM, causing Dalton’s third to be scrapped. Eventually, the lawsuit got resolved, but Dalton’s contract expired in 1993. He then had a change of heart and went back to the producers and stated that he simply wanted to do one more and then call it quits. Cubby Broccoli then told Dalton that he couldn’t just do one after such a long period of inactivity and offered him an improved 3/4 movie deal. Dalton, even though he agreed with Cubby, politely declined and announced his retirement from the role in April 1994. Pierce Brosnan then took over two months later, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I also think Dalton was the best. What I never understood was why did Licence to Kill do poorly at the box office after the ratings success of The Living Daylights. Some have argued it was just too violent and dark but I don't think that a likely reason. Perhaps people just wanted a break after so many movies. If the author of the video has any idea I would really like to know. Dalton was before his time but he paved the way for Daniel Craig. I did love Maryam d'Abo in the Living Daylights.

@mrmeerkat10963 жыл бұрын
History will look back on Dalton as one of the best 007 if not the best. The two he did are two of the best Bond movies ever. I also think the actor he is, Dalton wouldn't do a Bond movie if it wasn't up to scratch. I think if the producers had told him the next film is die another day, Dalton would have stood down from the role.
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
Dalton had a knack for playing the character straight. But believe it or not, the draft for his scrapped third featured a scene where he fought a Terminator style robot.
@mrmeerkat10963 жыл бұрын
@@LexingtonDeville984 I wonder if that is because of the success of terminator 2 in 91, either way it sounds really bad. I don't think even Roger Moore would get away with fighting a robot never mind Timothy dalton.
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
@@mrmeerkat1096 It gets better. The second draft was more of an action comedy that had Sir Roger quips, Dalton’s Bond moaning that he was "too old for this" and a scene where he dressed up as a cowboy to sneak into a rodeo. Seeing as that draft was written by those who did Twins and Stop Or My Mom will Shoot, the first draft was practically Citizen Kane.
@mrmeerkat10963 жыл бұрын
@@LexingtonDeville984 maybe the legal issues with the franchise were a blessing in disguise. Why would the producers want to go back to the Roger Moore style of Bond movies? Were they trying to make Dalton more popular as alot of fan's back then didn't take to him after Moore.
@LexingtonDeville9843 жыл бұрын
@@mrmeerkat1096 I think they wanted to bounce back from Licence to Kill’s disappointing run. But the first draft for Dalton’s third (the one with the robot scene) was a lot more mature than the action comedy version. He was even considered for a fourth where he battles the Yakuza in Japan and would of played to his strengths as a more human Bond
