Depends what you're listening to. There's plenty of rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz out there being made today by artists who are forced into obscurity because their genres "don't sell", or it "isn't what the public wants to hear", but that's literally what producers said about James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, as well as countless other great and talented musicians who are now considered classics, who we couldn't imagine the world without. Unfortunately, it was often, and probably still is the case that the most soulful and underrated artists were black, and severely discriminated against (given bum deals, getting ripped off by their record companies). Sadly, if you turn on the radio today you hear the same 8 songs on repeat, so I agree that the radio is no place to hear soulful tunes (some stations have jazz/soul/blues programs, and are an exception to this).

James Carr's performance set the standard. But, a significant portion of the credit has to go to Chips Moman and Dan Penn who wrote this song. Written by Memphis writers Dan Penn and Chips Moman this is one of the best cheatin' songs ever written and sung by one of the the best, if not THE best Southern soul singer of them all. This was Carr's greatest hit, however, his career was hampered by a crippling bi-polar condition and he never really achieved the success his exceptionally fine singing so richly deserved..
