Lincoln and McKinley? Ah, tariffs worked 150+ years ago and nothing has changed so they will work now. 🙄
@dodobirdfisher469716 күн бұрын
During McKinley’s presidency, tariffs along with a massive increase in the gold supply created inflation which helped because the country was in the middle of a depression and had deflation for decades before that. Also tariffs were needed back then because it was the government’s source of revenue. More often than not though if you actually study US history you’ll see that tariffs hurt the American consumer more than it ever helps industry by creating inflation which people hate as you can see by the result of the 2024 election. Tariffs are definitely not needed now that we are already in a period of highly inflated prices. Ironically the people who used to hate tariffs the most were farmers who voted overwhelmingly for Trump. I think this is because in recent history the US hasn’t had many tariffs as part of the neoliberal consensus so people aren’t aware of what they mean. If Trump really does across the board tariffs which are as high as he is promising, I guarantee you Republicans will lose a lot of support in 2028 even in reliably Republican areas. That’s a pretty big if though, I think he’s probably just bluffing about most of the tariffs he’s proposed because he’d have to be insane to really put a 60% tax on everything from China.
@paulbaresel678416 күн бұрын
@@dodobirdfisher4697 A wonderful reply. You show a great knowledge of U.S. history. As a history teacher for 15 years I am greatly impressed. A few things to reply to. First, tariffs are not the culprit for inflation in the McKinley Years. The reason inflation was high from 1898-1899 was the Klondike Gold Rush. This flooded more gold into the market than McKinley had anticipated. One needs to remember that the country saw a recovery from the Panic of 1893 and the five year depression due to increased gold and the tariff protections that the Dingley Tariff of 1898 gave American companies. This increased inflation due to expanded gold for money and economic recovery (which initially leads to inflation. We saw this from 2021-2022 as the country emerged from COVID Lockdowns). Second, the statement that anyone who knows US history knows that tariffs hurt the economy is also debatable. The first tariffs introduced by Hamilton in the Tariff of 1789 proved to be successful in protecting America's infant industries from British dumping of cheap goods. Throughout the Civil War the Morill Tariff flooded America's newest national banking system with gold and silver. This period saw significant advancements in infrastructure, such as railroads and factories, which were essential for economic expansion. The protective tariffs contributed to transforming the U.S. into one of the world’s leading industrial powers by fostering a favorable environment for domestic manufacturers. Third, tariffs have been used effectively for trade reciprocity. During the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan played a crucial role in the revival of Harley-Davidson, which was struggling against fierce competition from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers. In response to the dire situation facing the company, Reagan imposed a 45 percent tariff on large motorcycles imported from Japan in 1983. This protective measure was intended to give Harley-Davidson the breathing room it needed to restructure and improve its product quality. By the time Reagan visited the Harley plant in York, Pennsylvania, in 1987, he noted that the company had successfully turned around its fortunes and no longer required tariff protection. This intervention not only helped save an iconic American brand but also highlighted the impact of trade policies on domestic industries. This tariff would also lead to a evening of trade between Korea and the USA in terms of automobiles. Finally, the "American Carnage", to quote President Trump, from free trade is something one can easily see when they tour the Midwest. resulted in a decline in U.S. manufacturing employment, with estimates suggesting a loss of around 700,000 jobs due to trade deficits exacerbated by the agreement. Allowing China to join the WTO had also empowered a vicious enemy of he USA and has made a lot of employers of child labor a lot of money. American communities were also hollowed out. Are somewhat higher prices worse than this? I want to once again say you made excellent arguments, but I will always be, as President McKinley said, "a tariff man!"

Carville is completely oblivious as evidenced by his conclusory statement that Harris won the debate. She only won the debate in the eyes of her supporters, who were the only people she was speaking to in the debate. The debate was her opportunity to speak to independent voters and she declined to do so. The real time meters used by one pollster based upon Republican Independent and Democratic voters illustrated that when Harris was speaking only her base was receptive to her comments, whereas both Republicans and Independents tracked not being receptive. Conversely only the Democrat voters tracked non-receptively when Trump spoke, while both Republicans and Independents tracked receptively. If you only cater to your party base, you'll never win as you must speak to the largest component of the American electorate, which is the independent voters.

Carville thinks that if they had a primary it would have given them a better candidate but that candidate still had to defend the indefensible: inflation and the DEMs' open border policies. Those two issues were #1 or #2 in the minds of 59% independent voters. Mother Teresa (RIP) would have lost vs Trump with such atrocious policies.

James the point of tariffs is to penalize countries that tariff our goods which is basically everyone, from China to the neighboring country of Canada. If they would like those tariffs lifted then they need only to lift the ones they have against us.

Note the priority - he's not in the slightest concerned that the country might have a leader mentally unfit for the job, only about whether his side keeps winning. This is consistent with e ery Democrat opinion I've seen regardless of how they view Biden's mental state

I think Carville is spot on. In 1992 Clinton said that he felt our pain. In 2024 Biden/Harris said that we are imagining our pain. Trump won convincingly, but not in a landslide. Yes, he won the popular vote, but he did not win a majority of the popular vote. If Trump was half as likeable as Reagan Trump would have won in a landslide.
