The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Carpool Karaoke is a massive hit, but few people know that the original idea was to pick up George Michael (from prison) and get him to sing WHAM! songs.

Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

"I miss architecture." YES. I know what you mean, James! That's why London is a magical, beautiful, and different city to live in compared to other metropolises like NYC and LA, and I miss it. The Parliament, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Shard, the Millennium Bridge, the Tower Bridge, the Eye, etc. Plus all the old, old historic buildings, or the ones reconstructed post-war. Just walking along the Thames and taking in the river and the architecture, sigh. And the neighborhoods are distinct and wonderful. And the beautiful museums. Other European metro cities don't compare as cities to live in when you're like me (a New Yorker), they are too small. And that tangential ending speech... I swear he got emotional for real. That's a genuine good guy right there. Love you, James! Can't wait for you to kill it at the Tonys!

It doesn't work out. I am an American that lives in suburban parts of America, and I can tell you from experience that everyone that lives in a city is self righteous and has no consideration for the rest of the world. These people think they make a difference, but really their minds are blocked off from reality and what is really best for a country. They have no logical sense and it gets worse. That is why I do not endorse Hillary Clinton for president because she is very similar to these types of ignorant people.
@michaelp1630
@michaelp1630 8 жыл бұрын
AntWillsKills, First you say "Fuck Stephen Colbert. Fucking Bitch." Now you rant on about city folk when you CLEARLY state that you're suburban. You're not a City guy, so who the hell are you to talk FOR and ABOUT city folk? See what i mean? You come across as a complete fuckin bellend. " These people think they make a difference, but really their minds are blocked off from reality and what is really best for a country. " Are you some kind of bloody psychic? that you can READ THE MINDS of these people? Good lord shut the fuck up. Look buddy, i like Trump, he's the better of the two evils ( Hillary vs Trump ). But i'm not voting, because it's the GENUINE IDIOTS LIKE YOU, who make the most ridiculous claims that make the rest of US SANE supporters look fucking retarded that i just don't want to associate with you brain dead morons. This is the United States of America, Freedom of Speech motherfucker, just because you don't like what the opposition is saying doesn't make you any more right than them, it just means you have a difference of opinion. That's the bloody problem with you Ultra nationalist, you think your opinion and options are the only ones that should be available. To establish my credit, I've lived in the San Diego hood for around 6 years, then around 3 years in the heart of Downtown San Diego(the city) and now I've lived in the Suburbs 25 minutes north of Downtown, by the MCAS Miramar Base of Operations for around 3 years now as well.
@antwillskills8203
@antwillskills8203 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Pollante You think what I say is contradicting? I don't understand how you make a better arguement than I do, when at the end of your argument you say "shut the fuck up." At least I say what I mean with pride and explain myself. The only argument you have, is what I have said. The fact that you used to live in a popular city makes my point. If you are a ignorant person that lives in a city, you think that you are better than everyone and you can make a better statement for the world. If you truly knew what the world's problems are, you wouldn't be arguing with someone who is probably half of your age, on your side, and making a statement that is purely opinion. Yes I said Fuck Stephen, but it was only for his personality, not politics.
@uhPoo
@uhPoo 8 жыл бұрын
+AntWillsKills So, from the experience that you've had, everyone that lives in a city is self righteous? Everyone? This coming from a person from the suburbs is an idiotic thing to say. I'm from Philadelphia so I know exactly how people from the city of Philadelphia can be. But, I've also been in many suburbs in America, so I can tell you from my experience that there are shitty people no matter where you are. If you aren't from the city you obviously don't know a lot of good, kind, generous city people. The problem that we have here is that people are so quick to judge an entire sector that it become bias. I'm not even going to get into politics because I believe that we Americans should come together rather than rage over who OUR next president is going to be. No matter who I vote for my goal is to improve the future of my country.

You should visit more places in the world maybe. I would call myself an earthling because I don't feel the need to connect myself only to one place. I live in Malaysia because my mum is from here, I was born here and I love the food and I'm half Malay but refuse to be a Muslim. I also feel American having lived there for 11 years but I came to Malaysia for a while and went back only to be kicked out. Since being kicked out I don't feel American anymore. So one day maybe I'll move to England where my dad is from.

I just hope you feel no shame about it. It's perfectly OK to embrace whatever's closest to you... If you were born and raised in America, it makes a whole lot of sense for you to be raised to think like this. As long as you do know that the way you see the world at large is not limited to you only, and you're aware that other people might see a completely different world, you're fine. I feel like the key to being a citizen of the world is to be perfectly aware that there are many different ways the world can be looked at. You don't sound like that's something you don't understand. I'm French, I was born and raised in Paris, my parents are both from Ivory Coast, I've lived in the UK and in Canada for a while, and I got family in a whole lot of countries - the concepts of nationality and origins are very foreign to me. My nation is whatever I feel close to emotionally and culturally. So just as long as you keep an open heart, and you don't stop at insignificant notions and expect the unexpected, IMO you'll always be fine.

The philosophy of "being a citizen of the world" is one that should be encouraged if we as a species, want to further develop. Why? I feel that uniting as one is the only way we can stop the bad things in the world: Hunger, Poverty, Terrorism to name a few. Now i'm not saying we suddenly become communistic, but the only way in which any of those problems can be solved is by generosity of the super rich. If I write more, people won't read, but what's everyone else's opinions on the matter?

I think it’s a beautiful philosophy that should be encouraged, because it’s almost the solution to all the world’s problems. What I mean by that is by SEEING that we’re all just *humans* we can put a stop to racism,sexism, the list goes on. The world needs more people with that mindset.

Even if you'd unite the world, it wouldn't stop anything of that. You still have hunger and poverty in wealthy countries. Even terrorism would always exist, because there would always be someone who is against a system, be it for political or religious reasons. If we can't stop things like that now, we won't stop them after uniting the world either. That may sound extremly pessimistic, but I think it's quite realistic.

What a beautiful perspective. With everything happening in the UK at the moment, I kind of wish all my fellow Brits had been to space. Then maybe everyone wouldn't be using nationalism and xenophobia as excuses to leave the EU; we could just see all these divisions as arbitrary, be citizens of the world, and love everyone regardless of their birthplace.
@benergi4220
@benergi4220 8 жыл бұрын
Britain heroically leading the way for Europe would be perfection but unfortunately there's a time and a place to be idealistic and that time is not right now. With that being said people will always be helping each other, there will be charities and enthusiastic groups who are more than willing to provide support to other countries. At the moment people want security for themselves; the UK is far from perfect so let's prioritise ourselves for the time being:/ I don't want to argue about any of this tbh I just wanted to watch a James Cordon video XD after I saw your comment I had to mention that there's no reason to lose faith in Britain's humanity because they're concerned with security regarding jobs/finance/terrorism; its unrelated to xenophobia. Leaving the EU has nothing to do with this video; it's not a good idea to bring something political/economical to a video about Carpool Karaoke :P

This video sums up my thoughts, I am a person of the world, not EU or UK so I'm a rare thing a lefty who doesnt mind the exit, I had a slight pref to stay but if we could reduce inequality by lowering property prices and less bankers it has its benifits. Plus things like tampon tax and Merkal are not needed, I can go on for ages with benifts of being out but I could go on slightly longer with reasons in is better.

Except not. These two very privileged rich men preaching love, tolerance and sharing universal have very little or nothing in common with, say, a destitute pakistani slum dweller preaching the death of blaspehemers. There is no unity.

+alfred delatourquipenche Damn, instead of trying to dampen the mood and nit pick, both worked their way to where they are today. We're all privileged because we've got roofs over our heads, Wi-Fi, running water, working toilets. Yes some have it better than others but dwelling on that not only doesn't improve anything, it makes it worse.

In the UK, actor Robert Llewellyn had his "Carpool" web series way back in 2009. That's where the "driving celebs to work & chatting" thing started, and his series made even more sense because he used an electric car: no noise = better sound quality. Was Corden aware of this? Well, his "Gavin & Stacey" co-star Rob Brydon was one of the Carpool guests.

Thank you for bringing light to this. I enjoyed watching those when they came out. Corden's carpool karaoke has always made me think back to that web series. I had no idea about the Rob Brydon connection.

@bakersteven3
@bakersteven3 8 жыл бұрын
+Elliot Smith I'm sure LA lovely, but London has an unfair advantage. It's been around for over 2,000 years, so, you're going to get huge range & mixture of architecture. It does off course mean the roads are not as efficient as the USA cities to be fair. For example Greenwich university is in the Old Naval College, built in the 18th century or Tower of London, built between 1095 and 1820!! Hampton Court, Henry 8th, 16th century, British museum, built 19th ; Shard, Natwest Towert, Gherkin etc all 20/21st C.; we've also got some rubbish as well! As I said a wide range of architecture.
