Olraith McAuliffe doing Lord Gordon’s Reel with harp is the reason I’m a whistle player now, and hers is the style I try to imitate the most. She plays so incredibly, and I just find her playing so fun and special. I also really love hearing Seamus Egan, Vinnie Kilduff, and Mary Bergin, *to name a few.* And I love the fun way that Brian Finnegan plays!! (Also, Flook is awesome!)

Being fairly new my inspiration is not a single person. Being proud of my Irish roots, I begun researching the history, food, and music. I was drawn to the whistle because it can produce both joyful and haunting music that was very attractive to me. Thank you for your videos.

I play the tin whistle for 3 years. It all began with a few weeks of holidays in Ireland. I came back with a whistle and McCullough's book. I'm learning everyday from records of John Sheahan, Paddy Maloney, videos from you and TinWhistler.

I've only just started playing/practising the tin whistle a couple months ago. When I was a little girl I loved (and I still love) The Corrs. Especially the instrumental pieces with tin whistles. Now I can play a couple songs and I'm absolutely loving it. I have three cheap tin whistles right now, and I bet I'll have a bunch more before the year is over. I don't have a more 'traditional' favorite whistle player just yet, but I'm discovering more songs and artists everyday!

A lot of my favorites from when I first started paying attention to whistle were also pipers, Liam O' Flynn from Planxty, Neil Anderson from Seven Nations and the piper/lead singer from my old band (I was the bodhran player), but I also really loved Michael McGoldrick's stuff, especially his work on Kate Rusby's albums.

I first got interested in whistles due to the folk metal band Eluveitie. They use traditional tunes as the inspiration for their music. They play basically every Celtic instrument along with typical metal guitars and drums. They have also released two pure folk albums if you’re interested. When the coronavirus lockdowns began and all the shows got cancelled, their whistle player, Matteo Sisti, began offering Skype lessons. I started lessons with him in June. After I started playing I realized I like playing pure trad folk even more than their folk inspired tunes!

I have just started learning the Irish Whistle so I've not followed a lot of players or bands, although over the years I've listened to The Chieftains and Clannad quite a bit. I've just recently discovered Mary Bergin on You Tube and love the light dancing way she plays jigs and reels.Cutie Pie got me started listening to the whistle and interested in trying one out. Mary Bergin was who got me into whistle playing and who still inspires me the most today. As far as emulating though, Bergin’s hard for me simply because I’m not technically advanced enough, although I do work toward her general sound and style. I’m more likely to try to directly emulate youtubers like you or Ryan Duns, or to copy players I like from recorded sessions (and hopefully local sessions again once the bars reopen for live music).

While I was still in college some 5 years ago, I looked up to James Galway and Viviana Guzman. Those were the masters that I "tried" to emulate. I was an amateur, taking flute lessons as an elective. But all in all, the band that inspired me to study the Flute is The Corrs. My love for melodies started with their celtic/irish inspired sounds. As for the whistle, as cliche as it might be, Mary Bergin is my whistle goddesses. 💕 Im still in the process of learning the whistle well. Learning by yourself is a slow, tedious process but somehow I enjoy it. I keep on listening to a lot of music, including the ones played by the ones I mentioned.

Kevin Crawford, Michael McGoldrick, and Brian Finnegan have probably been my biggest whistle/flute inspirations, and PJ from "TinWhistler" got me hooked on low whistles years ago with their "New Low Whistle Video". Another potential option for flattening the pitch on the Dominic whistle: I've been playing around with using poster putty to create boxed windways for the purposes of strengthening the first octave on some whistles, but a side effect is that it flattens the pitch, so that might work here, provided that the second octave is relatively easy blowing. It should give the first octave a bit more punch as well. By the way, I see you're a Micro 4/3 guy! Nice setup. When I don't just use my phone, I use an Olympus EM-1, although it's not a video beast like the GH5. You do a great job with your productions, and I'm enjoying having more people doing reviews. I'm neither good enough nor polished enough to tempt whistle makers to send me things to review, but maybe someday, when I become a real whistle player...

Thanks for the vid! It's always helpful to hear whistles played and reviewed for those of us who are not able to physically get to hear it in a music shop (ha! that's pretty much any of us in pandemic times!) and are too cash poor to keep buying online until we find one we like. As for who's my favourite? Tough one. But I like Flook - whistle + flute = awesome!

Hey! Thanks for all the work you do putting out whistle vids! My two favorite players are Conal O'Grada, and Cormac Breatnach. I love Conal O'Grada's rhythm and the fact that he doesn't seem get too bogged down with ornamentation. I really like that - simplicity and punchy rhythm. Cormac Breatnach has a really jazzy style, or at least what I think of as jazzy...lots of slides and cool rhythms. Alan Doherty is also really great to watch and listen to for the same reason.

Hi Seán, Thank you for doing that review. I am probably too late for the draw but if not then do factor me in! I have recently been bitten by the tin whistle bug and have learned some ballads [The Auld Triangle - Raglan Road], some movie scores [Lord of the Rings - Braveheart]. But over the last couple of days I have been doing my best to master some tunes from the Chieftains' first album from 1964 and I am delighted to say that I am able to play Sé fáth mo bhuartha and Cailín na Gruaige Doinne =). I really like your channel and have learned quite a bit from you already, so thank you again.

Awesome! I'm just learning but have wanted to learn ever since hearing Spider Stacy for the very first time way back! I love the modern music that incorporates whistle into it, rogue folk, pagan folk, but of course Irish Trad has always been wonderful. I'm really new to playing whistle but would love to pick up a low whistle after getting a normal high D. I've always loved traditional Irish music as well as more current stuff, I got into it through pub songs as well as Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's, but it lead me down the rabbit hole of whistles and I always find myself listening to The Dubliners and try to emulate the sound they have, as well as more modern players from bands like Omnia! Love learning from your videos and Cutiepies videos! Keep up the good work!

Influences: Mary Bergin, Matt Maloy, Paddy Maloney- and Philip Boulding of Magical Strings. I love all these players but Philip Boulding's deep love of music in general and his heartfelt desire to share that love with everyone is what makes his playing really stand out for me. I got to play with him for a while as a beginner and he was so generous with his time and expertise, and genuinely eager for me to excel! Every time I played with him I was made better not just musically but as a person. I would love to be able to play an octave D whistle but my hands are too small and my fingers are too narrow, even playing as you do, James. The lowest whistle I can manage is an octave G. Mine is made by Michael Copeland, as are all the rest but one of my whistles, which is a Tony Dixon in A. I really appreciated your review here- so clear, concise and extremely useful. Thank you!

wow, a lot of comments! I've been really enjoying your videos! listened to Na Fili andLe Cheile, Chieftains and of course inspired by Planxty and the Bothy Band. Matt Molly. later influences are of course Mary Bergin, Seamus Egan and Lunasa but more recently Orla McAuliffe and Shannon Heaton (who I've been taking lessons from). I met Mark Roberts in the mid 70's and he later started Touchstone, great player. There's an abundance of great flute and whistle players these days, Cormac Breatnach immediately comes to mind. I heard him once but Kevin Henry was the first i heard really rhythmic playing on a tin whistle. it was early to mid 70's. i believe he was playing a clarke. My grandmother came back from a trip to Ireland with a Clarke whistle for me. I've enjoyed whistles with some air range ever since. Enjoyed your band's version of wild rover btw!

i hate that i missed this, but id still like to say thank you for the review! i subbed regardless, my favorite whistle player is actually pretty...different. the reason i got into pennywhistles is because of eluveitie (like eluveitie-isara) or more of their heavy metal stuff like a rose for epona and helvetios, so my side actually came from a more hardcore side, but ive always LOVED the sound of a whistle with violin or piano, i own a D whistle i use in a few of my mixes ive done, none on youtube yet, hoping to eventually, but in summmary, my inspiration was actually eluveitie lol.

To be honest, my 14 year old daughter is who inspired me to start playing the whistle. She picked up one that I had purchased a while back, but that I had given up on, and started making the most beautiful music. I couldn't believe how lovely it sounded. I knew that I had to make music like that, so I gave her mine and bought myself one. I'm not as good as her, but I sure do enjoy trying to play. Hers is a Clarke Sweetone, and mine is a Clarke Original.

My favorite whistle player is definitely Peter Purvis of Gaelic Storm, although I think seeing Andrea Corr play tin whistle was the first time I became aware that the instrument existed. When I was in Scotland last September, I stopped by The Oban Inn during a Scottish trad session and saw some guys absolutely tearing it up on the tin whistle. I’ve got video on my phone of part of the session and it amazes me every time I watch. Seeing that session was what inspired me to pick up the tin whistle. Unfortunately, I have no idea who they were. I also love listening to the Great Highland Whistles that are played by pipers in Scottish bands like Skipinnish, Skerryvore, Trail West, etc. I do find that since I listen to a lot of Scottish music that I have tended to pick up the more Scottish “dum-da-dum-da-dum” rhythm (is dotted crotchet the correct term for this?) on some pieces because it’s more fun than playing the rhythms straight.

I've been a long -time admirer of the Chieftains, so Matt Malloy influenced me to take up the flute. Since I started playing, I have discovered Mike Rafferty and Harry McGowan on KZbin. I admire their relaxed style and tempos that allow you to really hear the tune. Recordings of Paddy Maloney and John Sheahan have set the standard in whistle playing. But I have begun to use the Whistletutor and Ryan Duns as my instructors to learn tunes and get started adding ornaments. Still looking for my own "voice."
