James Doohan grew up in my city, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was in the Rifle Club with my late dad at our High School in the early 1930's. Both served in the local militia, the 26th Field Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery. Our family has several pictures of James, my dad, and three other soldiers swimming in their army boxers in Lake Petawawa near the Artillery training base the summer before the war began. Both men were snapped up as soon as WW2, started but assigned to different Regiments. James was wounded on D-Day in "friendly fire". He was hit by a burst from a Bren Gun fired by a jumpy sentry. He took a round in the chest that was deflected by a steel cigarette case,that saved his life, and he lost a finger. My dad commanded a anti-tank artillery coy in a combat infantry regiment through France, Belgium, Germany, and into Holland, where he too was wounded in the Liberation. The Greatest Generation. I got to meet James at our High Schools 75th Anniversary Reunion. He was a fine gentleman. RIP

Lieutenant James Montgomery Doohan, born in Vancouver, BC, was a gun position officer with 13th Field Regiment on 6 June 1944. Late on D-Day, Lieutenant Doohan was returning from a patrol when he was hit by machine gun fire (possibly from a Canadian sentry). Doohan was hit by six bullets, four in his leg, one on his right hand (which required the amputation of his middle finger), and one in his chest which was deflected by his silver cigarette case. These wounds effectively ended Doohan’s war. He was evacuated to England where, upon his rehabilitation, he volunteered to be an air observation pilot. After earning his wings, he was posted to 666 Air Observation Post Squadron, RCAF in Holland in the closing days of the war. Following the war, Doohan returned to Canada where he trained as an actor. He is best known today for his role as Montgomery Scott (“Scotty”), Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, on Star Trek.

@jasonpye4649 Yeah, the school posted his appearance well in advance, so I put a couple of ST paperback books in my jacket pockets and carried one larger one that wouldn't fit. David Gerrold's World of Star Trek was one. I had marked each for the pages where he had a picture and he signed them. Nobody crowded around so we got to talk. I had an uncle at D-Day and he was there too, so we talked about that some. He had suffered some injuries, famously lost his finger there. He was pleased to be working steadily again. The previous decade had been pretty bad for him, which he mentioned in this video.

My favorite Scotty quote was when McCoy gave him an antidote to the Tholian episode, and he was told if you took a shot of it you couldn’t feel a phaser being used on stun. I fondly remember him at an opening of a video rental store signing copies of Star Trek IV. My friend and me were last in line waiting to have him sign our copies. While waiting, my buddy was arguing that engineering was located in the saucer section. I told him it was located on the hangar deck. Finally I told my friend to ask him to decide the issue. My buddy asked him when he was signing his video tape to validate his claim. His answer was priceless in his perfect Scottish accent: "No laddie, engineering be down below." This is something I will remember for the rest of my life. In my opinion, he truly loved the role he played in the Star Trek universe.

Noooo laddie. Twas behind the main deflector dish.Tthe hanger deck was behind engineering. Shuttle craft used the hanger deck. Why would engineering not have it's own space. The specs can be found online ya know.
@jnichols36 жыл бұрын
That was something I had wrong most of my life. Because of the blueprints of the 70s, I believed for 40 years that engineering was at the rear of the saucer. Which left me confused as to why suddenly starting with the movies it was in the secondary hull. Only in the last couple of years did I find out that the blueprints were not cannon. Hard to give up a belief after 4 decades. BTW I thought the movie engineering should have been a modernized version of TOS engineering. TMP engineering was really "underdone" and looked small and confining.
@jnichols35 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what I thought! That being said, the blueprints were pretty neat. To this day I wish I still had them. Last I saw them was the very early 80s. Not a clue what happened to them.

Its amazing James Doohan's son, Chris, is playing the role of Scotty on "Star Trek Conrinues" fan series here on KZbin. At times its like seeing his dad young again. Chris fills his dad's shoes nicely. Still the original Scotty is the real Scotty.

ImTheDaveman He also voiced his dad's Scotty character in Star Trek Online in "Night of the Comet" mission!

Star Trek Continues will be coming to a close soon, sadly. They've done an amazing job with that show though and they are providing a kind of closure to the original Star Trek series in the form of a final 2 part episode. Chris does a great job, very close to his Dad's performance but of course, there was only one true Scotty.

*Star Trek Continues* is, hands down, THE best fan-made incarnation of The Original Series. It makes me mad as hell what NBC did to all the fan based Trek productions by limiting them the way they did. Star Trek Continues is every bit as good as the original, and they managed to get actual Trek alumni to appear with them! Then NBC steps in and completely RUINS it for everyone. I'm done with NBC and everything within their purview.
@Elricwulf7 жыл бұрын
Mike Hawk I have said almost the exact same thing about Star Trek Continues, it's great. At first, it was a little strange to get used to Vic Mignogna as Kirk, but he captures the essence of Kirk so amazingly without it coming off as a parody, he does an even better job than Chris Pine (who I thought did pretty well) and after watching a while, you can really start to think of them as those characters. The actor who plays Spock, and also, Bones' actor (the second guy to play him) are great as well, really the whole cast, crew, etc. Everything about the production is pro and top notch. I can see why NBC felt threatened enough to set those overly harsh guidelines for fan films, but they still suck major ass for doing that, and I will not support Discovery personally because of that. I honestly hope the fans who do watch it, enjoy it, but I choose not to. They screwed the pooch way too hard on this one by saying "fuck the longtime Star Trek fans" in so many ways, and I heard it loud and clear. And there are many others who feel that way.

*Elricwulf* Funny you mention having to "get used to" Vic being Captain Kirk because I experienced the same thing as you. I quickly "adjusted" to the new crew and was enthralled to the point I felt like I was really watching the original series, and it impressed me beyond belief how they've been able get some of the original actors to reprise old roles or appear as new characters. I was blown away to see "Apollo" again, and seeing John de Lancie appear as a new Trek character really illustrates how high up in the fandom hierarchy STC is. They've managed to duplicate every nuance of the original show such to the point viewers truly feel as if they're back in the 1960's. Vic himself mixes the music used in each episode and he uses parts of the original scores mixed with various 'adjustments' to make it unique to the episode in question, but to viewers it looks and sounds like the original. I'm still reeling over CBS's bullshit "rules" fan productions must now follow, which was obviously designed to aquash any serious reproduction of ST. I'm absolutely *DONE* supporting CBS and anything within their purview. They apparently aren't capable of producing Trek on the level of these so-called 'amateurs' are so instead of embracing what could have been a great resurgence of the original series by working WITH them they stomp on it and threaten financial ruin of any and all who desire to make the show as good as it originally was. I have NO respect for any network that would leverage this over fans. CBS once again RUINED Star Trek by limiting fan-made productions.

I always loved the idea that he was having such a good time one the convention circuit for all those years. Being Scotty did typecast him, and his roles outside of Star Trek were very limited, but he often talked about how much he enjoyed the conventions. It's hard to believe that he's been gone more than 15 years now. RIP James Doohan, thank you for the gifts you gave us.

He said Scotty never got to beam down on away missions and now my trekkiness is forcing me to comment: Scotty got to beam down in "the devil in the dark," "who mourns for Adonis," "wolf in the fold," "Spock's Brain," "Cat's Paw," probably some others but can't remember off-hand. The best is when they leave Scotty in command of the enterprise and he's always a hair away from blasting everything with the ship's phasers XD

It was a memorable day when I got James Doohan's autograph at a Sci-Fi convention. I had purchased a photo of Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) and was standing in line waiting to get his autograph. I didn't see any souvenir photos of James anywhere so I plopped down Marina's photo and he signed it on the back.

I'm from Glasgow and James is such an inspiration to us because in the 60s we didn't have much representation in tv or fil so to see a Scot in a tv show and Star Trek of all things was just magical to us as I imagine it was for African Americans seeing Nichelle. What a man, he is surely missed.

He was my favorite character on the show and series. Working in one of the engineering fields for 30 years I told people I learned my skills at the Montgomery Scott Engineering School. If you know the job is going to take three hours to complete, you “seven hours and then when you are done in four, you have achieved hero status.😂

These were a different grade of actors... Began their careers in the "mainstream" in a doomed sci-fi prime time joke, that turned into a network seed, that bloomed into the cast of a hopeless 60's television experiment - now starring in a Hollywood project almost 15 years after it's inception. All of the cast have interesting back stories, and credits that the most devoted fan could see as evidence of a more diversive career. Yet, for the fans, they all returned 15 years later, and gave another decade of films, visits, and embraced what they became to their fans. You have to give it to the original cast, they gave their whole careers, and lives, into what started as an experimental sci-fi TV show. They all wanted to do more, but instead embraced (even begrudgingly) who the were to the people that loved them for who they were on screen. Here, you can see that James really is struggling with staying in both characters, 1-as "Scotty", and 2-as "James Doohan", known widely as 'Scotty'. You get that he really wants you to see him as a person, AND as an accomplished actor, obviously good in other roles. BUT, he goes along with the scripted interview, as late as 1989 - He made more appearances, and faded slightly from the public until his death. HE NEVER CURSED HIS FOLLOWERS, OR HIS CAREER. Even if there was a mishap here or there, well, put that against who he was. What a friendly, patient, dedicated man. If I could have met him, the words "star" and "trek" would have never left my mouth in his presence.
@OldGeezer556 жыл бұрын
That was the great thing about him. He EMBRASSED his Scotti-ness. He knew we looked at him with admiration and maybe even a little jealousy of his coolness, knowledge of his character even "under fire". He was just a great fellow, all the way around.
