This song drove other guitarists nuts trying to figure how to play it because there were some "bad chords" done on purpose. Some may call me "boomer" but there's no denying the best rock came from my generation of musicians. I've been playing guitar for 57 years (and trumpet before that) and Joe Walsh is in my top-5 list of favorite guitarists. I switched to guitar in 1963 after hearing Muddy Waters on the AM radio, bought a garage sale guitar that same week and started to learn to play the blues.

Great to hear of your journey, brother. It has a familiar ring. I started playing guitar in 1970 when I was 15, though music had bitten me hard already when I was just 9 years old. Back in the day, local FM stations played entire albums without interruption. My first exposure to Joe Walsh's guitar genius was late at night in 1970, lying on the living room floor as the FM station played the "Rides Again" album front to back. Bought the album as soon as I had the money. I always loved that photo of the 3 of them on chopper motorcycles in the snow.

Hey Jamal! Yes It's Me Again!! Just wanted to say THE PRIDE OF CLEVELAND OHIO!! THE JAMES GANG!!! 1970!! Joe Walsh went Solo and had many Great tunes on his own before joining The EAGLES!! I was so fortunate to see Joe Walsh in Cleveland a couple years ago with Tom Petty just before he passed!! Joe Walsh actually used JAMES, the founder and drummer of the James Gang during the concert!! Wanna hear more Joe Walsh (besides Walk Away which I see you already beat me to the punch) Check out his solo work with songs such as "Rocky Mountain Way" and "The Confessor "!! Then his guitar works on the Eagles song "Hotel California "!!

Walsh joined a band with 5 members. On the way to a gig, 2 of the band members quit. That left Walsh, the drummer and bass player. I saw in an interview that he said they decided to still do the gig since they needed gas money to go back and improvised the best they could. They got a standing ovation. James Gang was formed.

Joe was then forced to also become lead singer at that gig too because the singer quit. He later said it was the time he began growing as a musician the fastest, and now advises all young musicians to master singing and playing simultaneously as early as possible, as it will make you a great guitarist.

I saw them live in 71, at a little venue Sherwood Country Club in suburban Indianapolis and I also saw The Winters Brothers live at Melody Skateland on the west side of Indy. We had some awesome music back then. A good Joe Walsh tune to check out is "The Confessor"

Joe Walsh is a character. I remember watching a concert where he dedicated a song to everyone who had never had a song dedicated to them. Not to mention his stint on The Drew Carey Show.

Can't remember exact details but there was a Joe Walsh interview in Guitar Player magazine "back in the day" where he described how to mod a Fender Twin amp (still in production, known for its loud clean sound) to make it sound a little more raw. I bet that was what he was using here.

Funk #49 was track 1 on the James Gang Rides Again album released in the summer of 1970. Some other great tracks on this album were Woman, The Bomber, Tend My Garden, and Ashes The Rain and I. I was fortunate to see them live. Absolutely amazing!

Saw Joe Walsh with Ringo Starr and his all star band. Middle of the show Joe sat and played " Desperado " solo on the grand piano. Rest of the lineup was Billie Preston, Levon Helm, Clarence Clemens , Dr. John and of course Ringo. Eric Carmen came out as a surprise guest and did a couple of songs too. Damn what a show. Got to sing night they drove ole Dixie down with Levon. Better stop or I'll go on and on.✌out!

My wife and I host a radio morning talk show in Michigan (She’s Lacy James and I am Brandon James). Obviously, our coworkers call us the James Gang and this is our theme/intro song on the show. It’s perfect for it, besides the obvious for our names. Such a fun tune! Love the reaction.

I met Joe when I worked one of his shows in the 80's. He talked about the "Go to sleep" call. He said that when he would get back to his hotel room after a concert, and before he got to partying, he would call the front desk and ask them for a "Go to sleep call at 7:00 AM". They would say "Do you mean a wake up call, Mr Walsh?" He'd say "No!, I want you to call my room at 7:00 AM, and if I'm still up partying, tell me to go to sleep!" Classic Joe Walsh.

The riff from Funk #49 has an almost identical sound as the vocals in the main chorus from Footloose (the part where it goes "footloose, kick off your Sunday shoes"). I've always thought that and it's undeniable. Just like the riff from Green Day's Brain Stew sounds like Chicago's 45 or 6 To 4.
