Just to add, I've only seen James once, and it was when they supported The Smiths at The Apollo Theatre, Oxford in 1985. I recall that the guitarist had cut his finger earlier in the day or something and Tim Booth apologised beforehand in case his playing was affected. I just found this: "As he entered stage Morrissey greeted the audience with "Hello, we're the other funny Manchester group!", a reference to opening band James."
