"I'm that lucky guy who found his hobby and was able to turn it into a job."
William Dalrymple is a multi-award winning and bestselling historian. Growing up on the Dalrymple family estate in North Berwick, with an almost Edwardian childhood, William was sent off to Ampleforth College at just eight years old. It was there that his passion for history grew and he spent his free time on archaeological digs and getting lost in history books.
William has gone on to turn that childhood fascination into an incredible career. He has written numerous bestselling books including White Mughals and The Last Mughals. His latest book The Golden Road is out now..

Love William Dalrymple. My favourite author. He's brought such an extra depth of understanding to my travels in India.

My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance

I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $21k passively by just going into crypto investment , and I don't have to do much work. Inflation or no inflation, my finances remain secure. So I really don't blame people who panic

Eating a masala omelette while watching this. Great fun! I'm Indian, 10 years older than WD and grew up in London. We were taught no Indian history at all at school. We DID learn about Empress Matilda's escape from prison... which couldn't be more irrelevant, and the "other" Anarchy, the feud between her and King Stephen..... I read Dalrymple's books to help fill in the huge gaps in my understanding of the country where I was actually born. Given the huge elephant in the room-the former British Empire, this needs to be better addressed in school.

Fantastic author. I read City of Djinns as a young undergrad at Edinburgh in the early 90s and have been hooked on everything he writes since then. Great interview.

I prefer james obrien in this context, as opposed to talking over guests and browbeating them, even if he is usually correct to do so. Excellent interview

Chess...and the Art of War , although these days we are a Nation of Peace. The Ancient Greeks and Persians tried to invade India many times and failed. The great Religious epics Mahabharatha and Ramyana were probably source material for much of greek theatre, and everybody should know that from India the symbol 0 appeared and changed the course of maths and Astronomy for ever. Its even said that some of stories in the great religious epics formed the source of the Old Testament.
