DWP will penalise non-married couples for their 'household' income, despite having no shared bank accounts or financial responsibility. Yet a married PM and wife are to be considered separate? Marriage is the very definition of sharing financial responsibility! The double standard is completely ludicrous!
@snafutube
@snafutube Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right James, My partner (not wife) is self-employed (with no guarantee of future employment with the people she works for ) but is the largest income earner in our household - when I've been unemployed I was entitled to zero benefit because of our relationship, was entitled to zero furlow money despite being told there would be no more work for me at the start of the pandemic also because I was on a zero contract job (ironically for Serco and by extension the British Government). However, when it comes to paying taxes, because we are not technically married we have to pay more tax than a married couple, so we are treated like a married couple when it comes to being penalised, but not when it comes to benefitting ... But yeah Rishi Rich Boy; of course your wife's income is a completely separate issue to yours. Yeah, Right!! What a joke this country is.... what mugs we are to tolerate these self-serving liars.
@karlmylnere5712
@karlmylnere5712 Жыл бұрын
Snafutube the whole system is a total maze and decidedly unfair, you have an option in that for tax purposes you could of course get married , but that would seem a very lame excuse for doing so .Self employed people have had the rough end of the stick from successive governments for decades and I see no end to it , the system is definitely not fit for purpose and is overdue a total rethink as because of its Draconian measures it almost encourages people to give false information ,which in itself is unacceptable but in many cases understandable.
@snafutube

There is one problem with focusing on Sunak's wife - we do not employ her and she has no obligations to us. By pretending that she must satisfy us, we imply that we are awful feudal relics that believe a wife is her husband's property or at least his responsibility, whilst neither should be true. However, being formally a feudal country with a monarch as our head, perhaps it is appropriate that many of us are awful feudal relics. Did any of us worry what Thatcher's husband did? Of course not as he was not her property and therefore none of our business. A wife, however...

I don't know why the conservatives don't just take the mask off already. Rishi should arrive at the next PMQ's and open proceedings by stating that he thinks he's better than everyone else and that him and his mates can _literally_ do anything they want. Followed by him daring the British public to oust him and his party from power. English people are so ideologically gas-lit at this point that they'll turn out in record numbers to ensure the conservatives stay in power for the next ten thousand years. Sorry about the pessimism, but I have no hope that Britain is capable of doing anything right anymore. Maybe Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can find some way out of this terminally declining union and have some sort of future, but I'm sure England won't. Not sure we deserve one either...

Have been thinking this to myself from time to time, but have held back from saying much for the reasons you give, Ms Murtry's ethnicity and her gender. If this had been de Pfeffel, the ties to Russia might have had some coverage in the Guardian at least. Presumably what she's doing breaches no laws or regulations. However, it doesn't pass the test of the judges you mention: it is not enough that justice is done, it must be seen to be done. Those who enjoy great power and privilege must meet HIGHER ethical standards than hoi poloi, not grubby, dubious, LOWER standards. Sunak's wife must be seen to be above suspicion.

Not really to the crux of the matter - but the bit early on about claiming UC as a household got me... I was the main breadwinner in my house, until I was made redundant (through no fault of mine, company cutbacks). My partner (not wife) - was a PhD student at the time. She worked a (reliatvely low paying) job for the university and in return her fees for her studies were waived. I appreciate that is an unusual circumstance - but I was floored by the response from DWP which read basically "Well your partner has access to student financing..." She didn't. But that's an aside. We asked the Uni and the CAB and the Student Loans Company. We appealed for weeks. Then the folks at DWP said "Well if she's a student she should be able to get finances from her parents...." She's 33 years old ffs - this is not a case of the bank of Mum and Dad. DWP decided my Universal Credit entitlement was - diddly. Because my partner was a student. As said - I know and appreciate it was an unusual situation for them, but I explained it over and over and OVER again. So, as you say the notion of "there's no interest there in a couple / family scenario as long as there's lots of money.... oh but if you need some help then we absolutely consider you two people as a single entity" is, from experience, absolute hypocrisy.
