I can’t speak for everyone, but when I voted, it was based on improvements in the next 10-15 years. It amazes me that people think that a couple of years in (combined with a once in a lifetime pandemic), is enough to gauge the success or failure of Brexit. It takes so much time to change agreements/legislation/markets, we can’t just say it has been a disaster because things haven’t improved at the snap of a finger 🤦🏻‍♂️ Things weren’t exactly working brilliantly in the EU, hence why multiple other nations are considering an exit themselves. This is just a solution that is being attempted. Maybe it WILL fail, but I’d rather take action that fails, knowing I tried, than sit idly by and watch things stagnate. The pound has been weak for years. Let’s re-evaluate in about 2032, when we can actually be somewhat accurate in our assessment. I think there may be some surprised people…..

I have wondered whether Scotland leaving the Union and trying to re-join the EU might prove that it can be done, but who can wait that long? To me, whilst it is true that the voting demographics in Scotland were remain, what's to say its any different for areas of England that voted remain? London voted remain (although I find the idea of london going independent based on that fact hillarious), many cities in England voted remain. If you make an exception for Scotland, you Start to wonder about all the people that would want the same thing but are shafted by the reality of living in a country that voted slightly In favour of remain overall and therefore are viewed collectively as if they are the problem. There were far more remainers in England than there were in Scotland, but also far more brexiteers, because England is a much larger country. I don't know how we come to terms with that.

Whilst I really want to rejoin the EU Brexit has highlighted many core issues in the U.K. and these need to be addressed. Media accountability, trust, respect for facts and a new electoral system that is fair, proportional and accountable. The U.K. also needs to put measures and safe guards in place for future referendums as well. No mob rule, use them to engage with the public and build trust in politics so the government can do what is best for the county. Many of the political systems needs to be modernised and the public need to see a plan that can actually improve the county. We must start with the truth and go from there, pretty basic I would say.

@@richardlewis7498 it’s a two way street imagine if the question was the reverse. Basically whatever the question somethings are just too complicated to be left to binary yes or no for the general public to decide. Changes to society on a massive scale need be informed and carefully decided upon. We usually left the government do that as that is it’s function, sadly the weak political infrastructure in this country is the cause of many issues we now face. I would start with electoral reform and go from there. The EU at least uses proportional representation in its parliament which is more than what we get here, most other democracies around the world use PR of some form. To be honest if leaving the EU was actually a real benefit for the county and was proven to be so then fair enough, it isn’t and everyone is getting hurt by it in some way.

Perceptions of us matter, even if some might persist even after we've made a solid attempt to improve our image and our trustworthiness. It's very much out of our hands even when we start the "process" - still something we need to define.

I have often pointed out to people who say “they (the EU) won’t take us back anyway!” that that is a self fulfilling prophecy. My personal opinion is that the British people have been let down by a dreadfully sub par political class. Yeah, Johnson “got Brexit done” but Corbyn’s fence sitting first and Starmer’s silence now are a big part of the problem. Majority of Brits may already regretting leaving the EU and wishing to rejoin but without their politicians talking about it, acknowledging the issue and actively working towards rejoining people’s regret won’t materialize into anything concrete. It’s not so much the British people who have gained a reputation of untrustworthiness but rather their politicians. Tbh I find it despicable how said politicians (both sides) try to cover their incompetence and failure to lead by blaming the public with “you voted for it”, when everyone knows it was all a political game gone wrong.

Europe in my opinion will not want the Uk back in. The UK press for too many years laughed at the EU and some of its rules and yes... some of the rules were laughable but one has to look at the over all benefits rather than constantly point out the almost unimportant for the most part silliness of many of the rules. To many Tories derided the EU since the day the UK joined. The headlines, the political lies, the sneering of the EU from half of the UK public in my opinion would mean that the EU for the next two decades would not want the UK back. It will sadly take another generation for the UK people to even accept their decision was a disaster for them economically because the disaster has not yet happened. Covid put much of that on hold and disguised it but its coming to pass now and that will be a hard pill for the 52% of UK citizens who voted to leave to swallow but it should be a hard pill too because one can blame the politicians all one wants.... the public believed the lies when all other European citizens were mystified that anyone could believe them.

Getting everyone who promoted Brexit out of the House of Commons reform the House of Lords into an elected second chamber, indirectly elected by local councils and in doing so make it a true chamber for reflection and a real brake for governments pushing trough controversial legislation and I doing so get rid of cronies put there by previous governments to support them in perpetuity. Change the electoral system in such a way that it will become impossible to have a massive majority in the House of Commons with less then halve of the votes would be an excellent start.

All of those talking points are damning evidence of Britain pulling out of Europe. The bottom line is the British people were sold on getting out of the European parliament and all those rules and beurocracy. But the reality is that Britain pulled out of the common market which is a tremendously successful partnership allowing Europe to flourish not only economically but politically for the past 60 years. All gone with the brush of a pen. So now the British people must sacrifice to get back to where they were pre brexit. The European common market ensured that people could make a living wage. Now Britain has to compete against !ow wage countries such as China and Vietnam to sell their goods. There is no more market protecting them. That of course means social programs will be cut. The tax base will not be what it once was. When brexit was happening you could see those bankers from Europe licking their lips at the increase of business that they were bound to get as the influence of London banking system declines. Lets hope that Britain can go back to their historical strength of inventing things to create a competitive advantage. Because low wages is not going to get them anywhere.

I'm one of the biggest remainers going but should qe "re join" is a different question to should we "remain". For a couple of examples, there is no chance we will have a rebate for our membership fees, no chance we can rejoin without taking the euro, no chance we will have the original differences between our customs checked compared to the rest of the shengen area. I'm almost certainly in favour of rejoining but especially the taking the euro thing does make me nervous. I see how Germany bullied Greece 10 years ago and Italy, Spain and Greece would have been better off being out of the single currency post 2008 and got very very little help from the richer quarters of Europe. I think it's important that we don't make the decision to rejoin based on the same tribalism that pulled us out. It HAS to be an honest and open debate from both sides. A measured debate. One where both sides are willing to admit the weaknesses of their own position or it will just be the same calamity as the first referendum. I fear and attempt to rejoin will just be turned into the remainer victory parade amplified by years of pent up frustration, hut and anger. Cathartic for sure, but destructive.

Greece needed to be " bullied" because they were not willing to become more productive themselves and having their own currency continually devalued by their own gov to stay competitive is a road to now where fast. Greece joined the EU knowing what would be required of it to be a member. What many greek politicians wanted was the best of the EU without the responsibilities and thats not possible. The same for Italy. Ireland was effected dreadfully by the single currency and interest rates remaining so low simply because the German economy was in the doldrums due to re unification but on the whole? The UK is not even close to be ready to have the discussion regarding re joining, it will have to go through a lot more economical pain before that discussion is even tolerated which is very sad fo the UK.

They wanted the richer more productive countries to bail them out and the richer more productive countries said no so the richer more productive countries were called Bullies??? Irelands problems were much more than as a result of the German economy, there were because of hubris, stupidity, greed, free money due to low interest rates but I dont have the space in the comment section on you tube to write full reasons that are my opinion. Im not a remainer Patrick, I dont even live in the UK. I have no skin in the game here other than like the vast majority of europeans who watched Brexit unfold that found the entire situation incomprehensible. It's all going to come down to public opinion. I believe Labour will campaign the next election on at least a rejoin the Single Market, if not rejoin the EU manifesto, if, and only if, they have confidence they can win that way. Public opinion is clearly shifting, but not far enough that Starmer can feel confident yet, and his natural instinct is always caution. So he will keep his cards close to his chest and give no hint of such a policy now, while the election is still so far off. Our one hope is that public opinion will have shifted far enough by the next election campaign that Labour will take the leap of faith. Also, the closer the election gets, if the Tories are still trailing in the polls, the less the BBC will fear them taking away the license fee and will go further down the road of reporting honestly. I'm already surprised and encouraged by their recent small shift towards daring to question Brexit. Much of the power to swing this lies in their hands. I am cautiously optimistic.

He’s an intelligent man and without a doubt will do something about it, but right now by not talking about it he makes the tories look dumb when they try to use it as an answer to something that wasn’t asked. He’s making the Tories reveal what the emperor is really wearing

Yes, people I respect seem to think that Starmer taking the line "I'll try to make Brexit work better" is a necessary step for getting people who are having trouble letting it go to realise that we really did try honestly to make it work. I'm not sure it's overcautious, but I can see that argument.

@@paulhammond6978 we didn’t try to make it work, it could never work, but some people still haven’t realised that yet

@@paulhammond6978 It's a quasi-pragmatic approach. He realises just how divisive Brexit was and knows that to re-open the debate would play straight into the Tory's hands. I've seen it numerous times in PMQs where Johnson, Truss and Sunak keep bringing it up whenever they're backed into a corner. I recall that at the height of the Johnson controversies, Johnson was practically begging Starmer to talk about Brexit in PMQs. Unfortunately I think Brexit is a bitter pill the country must swallow for a few more years in order to rid it of its delusions of grandeur and exceptionalism.
