Sharing 'old people being crap with technology' moments We bought our grandparents a new remote control TV for Christmas, in the late 80s (they'd always had this 'big old clicky buttons on the TV set' faux-wood type telly, from like 1972) - The next time we went round their home we discovered they'd *locked* the remote control away in a desk drawer, when we asked why, they said they were scared of missing the TV with the remote controls "ray-beam" and accidentally setting fire to the curtains! I agree with Miles. I started listening at the beginning of the Middle Eastern uprising and it was a station that reported the news and had a solid opinion on the various subjects it reported on. Nowadays with Farage being given a voice and a pulpit to preach his distorted facts from and also Nick Ferrari who's won awards for his presenting on there and routinely hosting Jacob Rees-Mogg as a reliable voice on this subject; I am turned away from generally listening and pick my pundits. For me Nick Ferrari has hung his hat with Farage and other Brexiteers and is less interested in being an LBC presenter than using his position to make a personal point.

There is no "trans debate", mate. Our existence isn't up for debate. We're here. The debate is whether or not to treat us like humans, and I should hope the choice there is clear.

@abigailmurray58976 жыл бұрын
It's sad because we shouldn't need to say it. With most subjects I would agree with the statement that things should be open for debate but we have to draw a line before debate starts doing people real harm. This is especially important to consider when transphobes use debate as a tool to try and hammer people out of existence. Trans people exist and our lives are non optional. Our rights and treatment should be considered as sacrosanct and immutable as a cis person.
@barrychuckleisdead73455 жыл бұрын
@@abigailmurray5897 I don't think the "trans debate" is about whether society should treat them with respect and dignity - it's a given that all humans should be treated that way. The debate, as I see it, is whether society should change / depart from established "norms", and if so to what extent. Our society is incredibly sexist in many ways (e.g. prisons, sentencing, divorce laws, toilets, schools, sport), and how it can work in terms of accommodating transgender people better needs careful consideration. Knee jerk reactions in the name of not wanting to offend is stupid and offensive to everyone except the beneficiaries.
@rachek79585 жыл бұрын
I completely get why his comment would cause frustration, and I could be wrong, but I'm not sure the debate he's talking about is whether or not trans people exist and deserve rights. There's always grey areas, many trans people define themselves differently and lots of people approach gender differently and I think it's more about understanding that and identifying which social norms are harmful and which aren't. That's not a simple task and of course needs discussing. People debate what coffee to have in their office, people debate what colour to wear to a wedding. Debates aren't always critical or judgemental.

Who is he talking about here, what did the BBC tweet actually say, and to what did it refer? The first line sounds like a bad paraphrase of the Sargon tweet that Jess Phillips talked about on this very podcast (concluding that she wasn't bothered), but I don't recognise the other vague accusatory paraphrases that he uses to conclude that some unnamed figure is a 'fascist' being defended by the BBC.

I don't know what to make of all of the issues attendant on 'trans' at the moment but I don't know where you're allowed to go in Britain at the moment in a public space to have a conversation about that..." 37:40 Richard saying (regarding trans and similar issues) "... it needs to be debated..." 37:45 James "It really does." Replace "trans" with any other marginalised group and you end up sounding like a literal fascist. If someone in the US, following the current trend of blaming Soros for running a secret globalist conspiracy and other anti-Semitic nonsense, says "the Jew debate is quite frightening", for example? Or a few years ago when people were arguing against gay marriage people were saying "The gay (marriage) debate is quite frightening", and even now people make similar points about whether it's OK to not demonise gay people in schools, again "the gay debate is quite frightening". Or even, to pick another thing that's actually current in both the US and UK, "the immigrant debate is quite frightening". Debating fascist and bigoted views only provides air time to those views, and trying to paint them as anything other than abhorrent doesn't help. Which both James and Richard know because at about 40:00 they mock the BBC for not calling out an authoritarian (fascist) and presenting them as "uncomfortable truths". They even specifically say that: 40:48 James "There are things that define you as a fascist, and, you know the kind of weaponised persecution of minorities is one of the biggest giveaways." At about 41:00 James decries the idea that you can have a spectrum of facts. At about 42:30 they start to talk about understanding facts and having experts weigh in - but the experts have and there is no "debate", trans people are the gender they say they are. They knock people who debate climate change, and decry the attempt to have "balance". At about 45:00 James calls out mysteriously funded institutes and groups (about Climate Change). It wold be remiss if I didn't point out the funding for most of the anti-trans rhetoric, sorry, "debate", is from Right Wing religious groups in the US who want to use trans issues as the wedge to then attack the rest of the LGBT+ groups, and roll back abortion rights. And that's the hypocrisy. Needing a debate about trans issues, but calling out persecution of minorities as a bad thing. Needing a debate about trans issues, but calling out pointless debate when the science is clear. Needing a debate about trans issues, whilst criticising mysteriously funded lobby groups who are pushing an agenda. Why do I consider trans one of the warning signs of the persecution of minorities? Because trans people have been one of the first to get persecuted, even under one of the worst fascist/authoritarian/bigoted/horrific regime. Regimes go after trans people to test the water before going after other groups: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_f%C3%BCr_Sexualwissenschaft#Transgender_pioneers en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_f%C3%BCr_Sexualwissenschaft#Nazi_era hornet.com/stories/nazi-trans-movement-burned/

@@phyphor You demonstrate his claim to be correct, by your responding to a vanilla remark with utterly hysterical bullshit. It would not be "literal fascist" for someone to say "the gun debate is quite frightening at the moment, because you're not allowed to think" because the gun-toting libertarian nutters genuinely do condemn any rational discussion they espy with bruxistic vigour. In just the same way as you do when your apparent superstitious belief in gender isn't treated with the same delusional reverence as the belief that 'just add guns' is a solution to gun crime. I think you lied about him, because you don't want to admit that you don't care about intersex people, yourself. People with sex dysmorphia are just pawns in a sexuality-denying genderist fantasy, to people like you - and that is very worth discussing - how people become as mangled as you are. And this statement from you indicates that quite clearly: "Regimes go after trans people to test the water before going after other groups". Superstition was not invented in 2018 - it has been around for millennia - whereas sex changes have only existed since the 20th century. The "horrific regime[s]" to which you refer predate transexuality, and so could not have 'tested the water' on people who did not exist at the time! You are not a hero - you are just another bigot, trying to censor cricitism of their pet fantasy - akin to one of the delusional callers who phone in to his programme, thinking they're going to 'put an end to this silly debate' and 'make common sense prevail'. And then they say something that's obviously unsupportable like "Regimes go after trans people to test the water". That's not how progress works. That's how pointless, destructive censorship works.
