I voted remain in the referendum but I became a staunch brexiteer, not because I suddenly saw the eu as evil but because I accepted our democracy is worthless if we allow parliament to deny the wish of the people. What next? An incumbent party loses an election but refuses to leave office because they feel the voters didn't understand the issues?

Brexit not happening for three years was democracy in action. Our democracy is based on seats won in the house. If there aren't enough seats for a motion to pass then that is a democracy. The seats represent the will of the people. The EU referendum was won by 17.4 to 16.8. That is almost 50/50, so, of course, the seats in the commons (at the time) represented that and made it difficult to pass. You're misunderstanding (and oversimplifying) democracy. The conservatives now hold the seats and can pass Brexit, and that is fine. Hopefully, (despite pretty much all experts advising otherwise) that will work out okay. But, it is a shame that other social policies didn't really impact your decision to vote and that your vote was solely based on your misunderstanding of our democratic system.
@cockoffgewgle49934 жыл бұрын
@@craigbeckley2710 I'm pretty sure a majority of constituencies voted to leave. The representative MPs in those constituencies did not represent their constituencies, many did the opposite.
@craigbeckley27104 жыл бұрын
@@cockoffgewgle4993 Whilst that is a fair point it is also a simplification. The referendum was an advisory vote. The MPs that were voted in would have been quite clear about their position. Their elected position outweighs an advisory vote. Also, don't forget, just because a constituency voted leave, most voting was fairly split. Obviously, this was always going to result in a divide in the commons. A consensus has to be reached before action can be taken and that has now happened. But, for three years, based on the the referendum and the 2017 elections, clearly, no consensus had been reached at that time.
