James P. Johnson was an American pianist and composer who was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz and ragtime music in the early 20th century. He was born on February 1, 1894, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and grew up in a musical family.
Johnson began playing the piano at a young age and was already performing professionally by the time he was a teenager. He became known for his virtuosic piano playing and his ability to combine different musical styles, including ragtime, blues, and jazz.
In the 1910s and 1920s, Johnson became one of the leading figures in the Harlem music scene, playing at some of the most famous clubs and theaters in the neighborhood. He also composed music for Broadway shows and film scores.
Johnson is perhaps best known for his composition "The Charleston," which became a sensation in the 1920s and helped to popularize the dance of the same name. He also wrote many other famous compositions, including "Carolina Shout," "Snowy Morning Blues," and "Yamekraw."
In addition to his contributions to music, Johnson was also an important mentor and teacher to many young musicians, including Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. He died on November 17, 1955, in New York City, but his legacy lives on through his music and the many musicians he influenced.
