🥀One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard from James Taylor for sharing his life and love in the music industry. 🥀☝️🥀✌

His voice sounds so gorgeous on this recording. Perfection. Love this album--But I love all his albums. The 1st time I saw James in concert was in the summer of '76. I remember thinking during the concert that James sounds even better in person than on his albums. During intermission, people were walking up to the food/drink area and so many were talking about how great he sounded in person. I'll never forget it. I always try to see JT anytime he's in the general area of Balto/DC/NVA. I'll be seeing him this Sept at Wolf Trap Again, thanks for posting these videos❤🎵

This was the title track on the first album I ever "owned." One of my father's clients gave it to him as a gift for helping him get through hard times with mental illness. It's a real balm to see and hear now.

James was writing and recording in L.A. in the 1970s. For many artists California was the place to go. Carole already had the house in Laurel Canyon when with The City (Carole, Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, Charlie Larkey and Jimmy Gordon) recorded Now That Everything's Been Said in 1968. I first noticed her in 1963 but must have heard her and her songs since the fifties - then came The Cookies, Little Eva, Carole's single-sides, "Crying In the Rain" and "It Might As Well Rain Until September"... Carole and Gerry where writing hits all along, but I started paying more attention when "Pleasant Valley Sunday" came out. So, when The City album came out, I bought it. Still have my original vinyl copy! Something should have taken off, but it didn't. Others recorded some of the songs. The Byrds did "Wasn't Born to Follow", Blood, Sweat & Tears did "Hi-De-Ho", and Spring (Brian Wilson's wife and her sister) did "Now That Everything's Been Said". After James came back from England with an album under his belt, he found his way to L.A., and they recorded Sweet Baby James in December 1969 at Sunset Sound, L.A.. James and Carole became a team, recording Carole's Writer at Crystal Sound, March-April 1970. They began the Tapestry sessions in January 1971 at A&M Studios and in January & February 1971, Mud Slide Slim at Crystal Sound, L.A.. You could call those the Carole King/Joni period. He was writing songs wherever he was, including on the set when he was making Two Lane Blacktop. By the time of One Man Dog in Summer '72, James had met Carly and moved into that house he's talking about building on Martha's Vinyard. As humble as he is, he was also a rich man in 1972. Sure some of those songs were written there. You can hear he's changing the lyrics on this track from 1975. His first all East Coast album was Walking Man, January-April 1974 recorded at The Hit Factory, New York City. For the rest of the decade and into the 1980s he recorded in L.A. - again, those songs were written wherever he was, including on tour - he toured a lot. I was lucky enough to see the Taylor tours featuring Carole on piano on 22 October 1970 at Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California. It gets a bit hazy what was in each setlist, cause, you know, to see shows that far back you've got to be old - I just turned 71 last week. She was with him again at Barton Coliseum, Little Rock, Arkansas on 16 October 1971. It wasn't a duet show, Carole came out in the second half. At both shows Carole's spotlight song was "Up On the Roof". They did sing songs together tho, including "You've got a Friend". That Little Rock concert was a hoot! Not sure they do it everywhere now, but back then they had indoor rodeos in the South. If you wanted to be up-front near the stage you had to sit in the sawdust that covered the floor. I saw all of his tours thru Walking Man - my personal favorite. This may be from that tour, or an extension of that tour. He was solo with a tape machine for backing. He did that again years later. I'd have to look up the exact date, but it was at Northeast Louisiana College (now L.S,U. - Monroe) in Monroe Louisiana.

Will - ditto what Colin said! Thanks for the comment. Makes perfect sense since this was the Laurel Canyon/Joni period. So - “the cabin back in the woods” on Martha’s Vineyard. What an amazing house, from what can be gleaned from the photos of James building it and later glimpses from Carly’s photos and videos. I would love to see/tour that house someday but, of course, would need James or Carly as tour guides! I think I read that the “tower” on that house is the highest elevation on Martha’s Vineyard. Isn’t it fantastic that James was smart enough to invest the proceeds from SBJ in property rather than squandering it like most other rock stars did? But that’s why he has so many long-time fans (such as Will, obviously!). Will - did you say “Walking Man” was your favorite tour? Curious, if so, why? My first JT concert was the “That’s Why I’m Here” tour, which I’m sure was a totally different James than those of you who saw him in the 1970s. Thank goodness we have those old videos to get a glimpse of James v1.0

James lost that house to Carly in the divorce.

JT preferred it without pickguard to add to the tone.
