James was one of Apple Records first signed artists. So many of the top artsts like James, Linda Ronstadt, Carol King, Carly Simon, of the early 70s all collaborated on each other's albums.

Carole King is a great song writer and performer. James Taylor is so soothing and healing, a great voice.

James and Joni had a relationship. He wrote You Can Close Your Eyes. He called it a "lullabye" for her because of the time they were spending apart.

Carole King wrote "You've Got A Friend"; it was on her massive-selling "Tapestry". Her pal J. Taylor covered it quickly for his second album for Warner Brothers, "Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon".

Before this, Carole King had primarily been a composer, working with her husband Gerry Goffin and later Toni Stern as lyricists. This was her coming out as a lyricist. She has said of it that the words just came through her from some other place. "I'll be the first to say it's a great song because I feel like I didn't write it."
@MaartenVet-ce9px3 күн бұрын
When Taylor performs this song, I always get the feeling that he's talking to someone he hasn't had much contact with in a while, to remind them that 'hey, I'm still around if you need me'. Kind of like he's sending a message to an old friend that has drifted apart over the years.

I saw James Taylor last year. His sound hasn't changed at all. His son is following in his footsteps. Leland (Lee) Sklar is still actively recording and performing too. He's played on over 2000 albums. You probably noticed him when you reacted to Phil Collins, "In The Air Tonight - Live".
@BillBitterman-ny2jl4 күн бұрын
Lee Sklar actually got his break doing studio sessions work for James. He had no idea that the door opened by James would lead to a lifetime of work. He is still in high demand. The recent documentary called The Immediate Family is about a sessions group that actually went by the name of The Section for a long time. Lee and Waddy Wachtel and several others made a great living by working with people like James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, and many, many others of that era. Lee's KZbin channel is great

James' album Sweet Baby Jane and Carol King's album Tapestry dominated the music scene in the early 1970's. It was almost a revival of the folk music of the early 1960's. I found that his performance of You've Got A Friend" and "Fire and Rain" are very genuine. It is almost like a good friend talking sincerely to you. I have seen him in concert and the whole evening was him being James Taylor, a genuine good human being and performer.

The correct title of that album is Sweet Baby James, not Jane

This was released when I was in high school and at a very impressionable age. I've loved JT's music ever since. CK is also terrific. Linda Ronstadt was another one who did the "park and bark" and some people complained. But, her singing was magnificent.

I think maybe you were looking for the term "low key" or "understated". You've Got A Friend has a casual conversational style, like a friend is talking to you. Much like the tone in Lionel Ritchie's "Hello".

I've been listening to James Taylor since the late 60's or so. You've Got A Friend was my junior high (aka middle school) graduation song. My first car tape deck (compact cassette) was heavily employed playing my manually recorded copy of JT and some of his other albums.

I also get your point of rehearsal and focusing on the music. Same as an athlete, there is the practice field, training, and coaching session. The stage is your game time. It's time to play in real life. If you look at it that way, a football practice is the rehearsal everyone gets there scripted movement and you have to rely on your teammates to be on their marks. At game time it is full contact

It's more subtle, more real, bona fide, authentic, personal, sincere. At the time this was recorded he was basically just starting out. I saw him in multiple venues, from an intimate coffee house in Greenwich Village to large auditoriums where he had a whole band with backup singers and both were equally entertaining and special.
