Toney was one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen. Uber tough, incredible boxing IQ, great conditioning, super durable and a granite chin. Michael was a great champion also but his looser style left gaps for a master boxer like Toney to exploit albeit late on. Watching Toney fight Mcallum twice was just a pure joy to watch with skills, conditioning and heart at a level few have ever replicated.

I think they were waiting for him to get off of probation. He got released from prison not that long ago, and was still under control of the court. He got officially out of the "system" altogether in August, 2024. He's 100% a free man now after serving 16 years and being on probation. I believe he'll get into the Hall of Fame in 2025.

Nobody ever put his lights out like this again too - other losses were all decisions. Two by split. This fight is just a testament to how badass BOTH these guys were. Toney left every ounce of himself in the ring that night. Toney's chin served him so well - nobody could EVER finish him. This may have been arguably the closest anyone ever got!

When you get a boxer that can KO with either hand, most likely will have success in boxing. This is one skill that Toney had. But it also helped that he was relentless throwing those punches non stop.

I remember fondly watching this fight on TV as a kid. It was amazing. In our time zone it was aired late at night, so I couldn’t scream. It was very entertaining rewatching it now as an adult with a better understanding of boxing. At the time Toney comeback felt totally unexpected, but now I see he was building it since the 6th round, and he was trying more and more from the 9th on to catch Nuns jab with the left hook.

Those commentators were annoying and clueless. They sounded like Nunn groupies. James Toney was outboxing Nunn most of this fight and his defense was extremely impressive. Even when Toney was landing clean hits, they made it a point to say he wasn’t following up. He was stringing combos when he saw openings. Horrible commentary from them.
