Nice to have a perspective from a real life heavy user. My father-in-law still keeps telling me I’ll need a new battery after 3 years on my eNiro, bless him.
@kiae-nirodiariesencore42702 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, your father-in-law needs some education...or perhaps he’s beyond that stage. You can tell him that I have an early 2019 e-Niro (I live in France and we got them a bit before you in the UK)....so going on for 4 years....70,000 km, no discernible loss of range....comfortably 500 km in summer at 100% SOC, 400 km winter.
@adonisnetworks2 жыл бұрын
yes he's wrong on the time frame , not the need to replace it , at the 6 to 10 year mark it will need replacing, full stop . they don't last forever. degradation is a given on EVs , just in most cases it's well hidden in battery balancing in the battery management system ... until cyclical operation & aging degradation catches up with your car.
@kiae-nirodiariesencore42702 жыл бұрын
@@adonisnetworks Interesting, on what evidence do you base your guesstimate? Latest data suggests an NMC battery like that in the e-Niro will be good for 10 to 15 years (200,000) miles before it sees degradation below 80% of its original range. Bear in mind that by that mileage most ICE vehicles are either on the scrapheap or have already had expensive overhauls (not to mention about £3,000 worth of oil and filter changes). But we know the industry is moving to LFP, which are cheaper, safer, more durable though have less energy density. These should be good for 15 to 20 years. Most EVs on the road today (apart from Nissan Leaf’s) will go to scrap long after an equivalent ICE car and with their original battery intact.

Just signed the paperwork to get an 2021 MG5 EV on lease next month. We've been driving a 2016 30kWh Leaf for the past 2.5 years and we're never going back to petrol. The only issues we've had we knew about going in: it doesn't go as far as we'd like, and it's a bit small for three kids. MG5 solves both of those, so very excited. In terms of long term maintenance on the Leaf, apart from the seized brake issue you mentioned is common for Leafs, we've done nothing to it except replace the tyres and one shock after we hit a speed bump a bit quick. It's just had an MOT at 98,000 miles and had no advisories. Range has dropped to about 75% of new, but as I tell anyone who asks (and everyone asks): that's first gen battery tech with "passive" cooling. Anything made in the last 3 years will lose maybe 1% every 10,000 and now they build in a bit of overhead you won't notice that for the first two years anyway.

Taxi driver here in Dublin told me that MG stands for 'much grief'. We have an incentive scheme here for taxi drivers to move to EV. As a result it is difficult to find a fast charger during the day cos the taxis are charging. The problem with the MG5 seems to be that the taxis are only charging them on fast chargers and the batteries are not up to that. My KIa Soul EV manual specificially says to charge on AC as much as possible.

Ours has been rapid charged 118 times in the first year, the battery cooling and capacity mean your rarely exceed 1C, which is where a battery is comfortable. So far the battery is excellent 👍🏼

Hi James. Brilliant videos as always. I do have one question as I am about to purchase an MG5 but wanted your opinion on it. I have the option of 2 cars, one has done 3,000 miles and the other has done 22,000, both are MG5 LR on 71 plates. The higher mileage one is over £3000 cheaper but the higher mileage was a concern to me. If it has been rapid charged constantly (no way of really knowing) will that be bad for the battery over 20,000 miles? I’m assuming as it has that many miles chances are it has been rapid charged a lot. Also, I have seen conflicting info regarding the make up of the LR 61kw battery. Is it definitely lithium iron? I would rather that as they seem to have the longevity over other types, also I would rather charge it to 100% as and when I can for range purposes. Thanks for your time.

You will see the normal 5% degradation, that's unavoidable. However, if you look after it, it will be fine. 10%-90% working window as much as possible, avoid 100% SOH for prolonged periods of time, but use it as you need.

As far as I am concerned there is a big question mark over battery capacity longevity. I have a Nissan leaf 30 kwhr 6.6 charger Teckna that is 6 1/2 years old with under 30k miles bought brand new by myself and has never been abused, residing in the NE of temperate England. It has lost 3 battery bars and 1/4 of it's range / battery capacity. I hear you say, ah yes, ambient air cooled battery management and that is what I thought as well. That is until ' battery life ' channel demonstrated that his liquid managed battery in his id3 had lost 10% capacity in 2 years, which is similar to mine. I also have a diesel merc e class that is 14 years old and still does 650 miles at 70 mph at 51 mpg. New technology is supposed to be better than what went before, clearly it isn't ! I have just had a short 6 day break in the Scottish Highlands, doing 1200 miles in that time with a home to hotel journey of 347 miles, no long stops, no charging, just drive and 5 minute toilet stops, with still just under 1/2 tank left when we arrived. Wouldn't dream of doing it in a leaf or any other electric car for that matter, with the disastrous infrastructure and poor electric ranges on offer.
