Just did mine,I didn't borrow a grinder ,tried hacksawing the remnants of the ball race,er ,too hard to cut,worked away with a chisel until I could get a puller behind it,took a while. Would say grinder 100 % required. Good video.👍

Good thing i found your video, i did front brakes on my 407 and the pad carrier bolts were tight as fuck, ended up taking longer than it should. Now im up to do rear bearing and every other video takes off the carrier and i was just about to pay for somebody to do it. Never have worked on other than VAGs and mercs. Cheers mate.

Tips for amateurs like me save you a lot of time: Nut on the stub axle is crazy tight I snapped a 1/2" breaker bar had to use a 1m length of scaffold as a lever, so 3/4" or bigger bar may be needed. Rear of the bearing does not need to be cut off with a grinder, small sharp cold chisel no more than 8" long will get behind it and make a gap for the puller to get it off. Original bearing may have a toothed abs ring new replacement does not, design change, that brown part does the same job. Assembling the brake pads, fit the disc then jam the pads onto the little loose spring parts top and bottom, locate very carefully if you push those out of place you will need to strip everything back off. Good luck!

Must have had a cheese breaker bar! They can indeed be very tight though! Well done for getting what you got done!

great video, what is the size of the hub nut, i have seen 41mm and 40 mm stated on the net. i bought a 41 mm 12 point socket but not sure if this is a little loose to manage the torque, bought all the other tools also just not had the guts to start the job yet.
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 2 жыл бұрын
I can't recall but pretty sure I'd mention in the video. I NEVER buy 12pt sockets tbh. They don't treat the nuts well. 6pt for the win, especially for high torque applications
@gembowicz
@gembowicz 2 жыл бұрын
The nut you asked about- mine was 40 installed but new one in set was 41 and not having the 41 socket I had to use the old nut to finish the job.

Thank you for this, excellent instructions! So useful to see where you also struggle, with binding bolts and stuff like that, so I know when to just keep trying :P Some videos have the stuff just magically come apart which always puts me off when cursing and swearing underneath the car..

Agreed. I see it too often where they've clearly done it before and greased it all up or clearly edited to make it so. Which doesn't help the guy watching it at all!! Would love a sub if you could!

@@PiggyPower Aldready done! Just managed to change rear bearing on my Citroen C5 -13. Exactly the same procedure, only difference - i think - was that the caliper bolts were torx. Took me a few good minutes of blind fumbling to find that out.. :P Thanks again!

HI I have an 807 and I'm also replacing the rear bearings - very similar process..... used puller to get main and rear inner race off but probably factory fitted with a press and VERY tight - to put the new ones on would you it the inner outside bearing (as you did) , or the outer housing (as it is connected to the inner tight bearing race?) I have done one side but far too much hammering was required for my liking.... don't want to destroy the other side trying to fit it!! :-(
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 5 жыл бұрын
You may find if you hit the hub not the outer bearing face it will disconnect the bearing into two pieces, not a great situation to be in. What can help, is a good clean up of the stub axle, and heat up the bearing a little, this will help it expand a little and go on easier 👌

Any way of removing the hub assembly when you've no access to a puller?
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 3 жыл бұрын
Not likely no. Hammers and thumping will damage the hub/bearing races/stub axle. They aren't expensive and a useful tool to have around.

Cheers for the reply thanks for the vid it helped alot. Tackled the rear driver side today and went smooth with a 6inch gear Puller. Only issue is this barrr sound (almost like big boy exhaust) gets louder after 30mph on the straight cannot hear it up till 30mph then it's very noticeable. Sharp left turns at speed noise disappears sharp right and it remains I was told rear drivers side bearing changed that today and noise still there I've purchased rear passenger bearing so I'll fit that tomorrow and hope the noise goes. Noise isn't present when just sat idle and reving upto 5k rpm Also coasting in neutral noise remains And I've got upto 40mph and knocked ignition off and it also remains leading me to think it's not an exausst noise hence following the bearing advice I recieved it defiantly sounds from the rear of car though. Any other ideas just incase the other bearing doesn't cure the noise.

Well done. Firstly, simply jack each corner of the car up and spin the wheel, listen for grumbling and feel for play. Soon locate the noise/suspect bearing 👍

Nice series of pug 407 vids. More of us “home mechanics” are buying them as cheap run-abouts. What’s happened to the barge ? You still got it ? I see it still has an MOT.... it’s the rare executive model.... ruined by “grandpa gold” paintwork though...🙂

Top tip dont put mole grips on your disc ever. Second dont use and imapct gun on the torq bolts on the disc as your bound to strip it, use an impact screwdriver of stuck and you wont need anything to hold the disc. Neither did he using a imapct gun so clamped it for nothing
@PiggyPower
@PiggyPower 10 ай бұрын
If you listen carefully... I highlight that if you've got to undo the torx bolts by hand, you'll need to clamp it BUT I've got a "cheatgun" so don't need it. I like to cover eventualities that might occur for the DIY mechanic. (Not everyone has an impact gun) I've never had issues with clamping a solid disc with vicegrips, if done right it won't damage the disc. A DIY mechanic is less likely to have an impact screwdriver than a impact gun tbh... And an impact screwdriver is just a manual version of an impact gun .. they do the same thing .. used correctly, as seen in the video, you won't strip the torx head bolts. I use impact on torx head all the time and don't destroy them. If someone is doing so, they are inexperienced with using impact tools, are using poorly made torx bits or the torx has been damaged in the past.
@1D3AN1
@1D3AN1 10 ай бұрын
@PiggyPower that's why I was saying about the gun as most people watching these videos are nit mechanics and alot weekend diyers have impacts these days given how cheap they are but for given advice I'd always advise not using imapct guns in smaller torx just because most inexperienced folk will chew these up. And yes rhe imapct screw driver is the same but again impact guns are for speed and actually should be used when tightening or cracking the start and finish should be done via manual means because of the risk of stripping threads snapping bolts chewing bolts. But ovb in everyday life we do but the imaoct screwdriver is a lot more precise and controlled and should be promoted to the beginner mines is over 10 year old saved my ass millions a times over my imapct...... as for moleys you'd be straight up sacked for clamping a disc that isn't being scrapped think about it you smashing it into the brake carrier also might be okay for you but iv seen it go bad on both sides the disc get scratched to fuck because there not sooo tight and slipped as you turn the hub or damaging the carrier cause there cast just best to avoid or atleast put rubber in rhe jaws

@@1D3AN1 can't sack myself 😄 sometimes it takes lessons for people to learn how to do something the right way. Yeah I've messed up torx and hex bolts plenty of times in the early days of impacts... I can now remove a M5 torx bolt using my 1000nm Milwaukee... Gotta learn somehow someday. As for the grips... Yeah if you're an absolute animal you're guna damage the disc. But thats the same with all tools, you'll damage something if handled the wrong way.
