Volker Pispers never got "cancelled" because nothing he said was untrue. He simply slaps the truth into your face so hard until you either laugh or cry. :D Glad you are reacting to this, looking forward to the other parts.

He was not cancelled because it is satire. In satire, slight distortions of reality and exaggerations are allowed. And as well he is not press, so so most slightly inaccuracies are covered by *freedom of the arts*. All have to be aware that satire is no replacement for press or history. Even if there is a lot of truth in his storys.

The great thing about German comedy is that it teaches you about the world and historical events at the same as it makes you laugh.
@waayneinteressierts9704
@waayneinteressierts9704 2 жыл бұрын
That depends on the type of comedy. Volker Pispers is doing political satire, so of course it has poltical and historical context. The majority of german comedians don't really do political/historical satire tho, so you can't really say that german comedy is teaching you about history and makes you laugh in general, Volker Pispers does.

@@waayneinteressierts9704 Political satire is very much a thing in Germany. The problem is: Most of the time, it doesn’t really sell. And that’s why most of that kind of entertainment never makes it to the media, let alone getting subtitles, to make it accessible to people from other countries. Most of the political satire is happening in the cabaret. Volker Pispers said it himself. There are many artists like him, who struggle to make it to a full house performance on any bigger venue. Let’s face the truth about the media. They don’t care about you, if they don’t expect to earn money with what you do.

@@siramoras I don't know how it might have been in your school but in mine I got an overview about European history from ancient Greece and Rome, over the French revolution, the 30-year-war, worldwars 1&2 and the times of the DDR. And a lot of other Kabarettists that nurtured my interest in politics (I.e.: Urban Priol, Georg Schramm and in newer times Claus von Wagner, Max Uthoff and a lot of their guests). If you are USAmerican probably you should have been told something about this but on the other hand you are meant to pledge allegiance to a flag when in school, so I wouldn't expect to much critique. 🤔 I hope I chose the right words to convey my thoughts on this. The Issue with Pispers and many like him is that while hes VERY good at pointing out problems, he never really presents a solution. Everyone else is allways at fault.. he comes off like a preacher who is frustrated because people dont take the obvious "good" road and go down the ignorant "evil" road. Theres only a slight problem with that: Whom where people supposed to vote for when ALL candidates are basically the same? Not to mention that people back then didnt even knew what sketchy shit their goverments where up to and HAD to come up with. Lets not forget that soviet communism was just as real of a threat as was hitler germany to the world. The world was on the brink of anihilation a couple of times back then, and yes.. wars are fought dirty when the alternative is the destruction of the world. Also as i said before: he completly ignores is the fact that back in 1979 and 1990 there was no internet as we know it and that people where MUCH less informed and involved globaly. People got their information through print and TV media. And both only showed what the influential figures of the world wanted them to show. The broader Populace had no idea that their own countries where funding and arming Dictators and removing democratic elected goverments to replace them with puppet regimes. You can still see this in effect in modern day russia. People over there honestly believe that the invasion of the ukraine is not a war of agression... but instead a special military operation to remove nazis from control of ukraine. Because the TVs tell them thats whats going on... and your own goverment would never lie to you right? So yeah... moral grandstanding in hindsight with edgy humor might be entertaining, but constructive or helpfull? Not really. So him getting frustrated because of the stupidity of people is hypocrisy of the finest.. he was the one who lamented the fact that people want easy worldviews and completly failed to see that he himselfe build an easy worldview for himselfe.

I think for a lot of people the most unfortunate thing is knowing that you have to keep fighting even if you keep loosing again and again. Taking every tiny victory and using it as fuel for years upon years of attrition. That you know that you will not succeed in your lifetime but still have to preserve hope for the sake of what you hope to achieve as the next small advantage of the generation that may be a bit luckier than your own. I am still fairly young myself and ultimately, knowing that little will change doesn’t sadden me but it can be somewhat frustrating to know how much potential will be wasted because you can not convince enough people.

Actually it isn't comedy but Kabarett, a form of a satirical stage revue. From Wikipedia: Kabarett is the German word for the French word cabaret but has two different meanings. The first meaning is the same as in English, describing a form of entertainment featuring comedy, song, dance, and theatre (often the word "cabaret" is used in German for this as well to distinguish this form). The latter describes a kind of political satire. Unlike comedians who make fun of all kind of things, Kabarett artists (German: Kabarettisten) pride themselves as dedicated almost completely to political and social topics of more serious nature which they criticize using techniques like cynicism, sarcasm and irony. I hope you have fun and get something out of it because that's what it is actually about. Oh, and keep in mind George W. Bush's recent slip of the tongue when he accidentally said "Iraq" although his script said Ukraine. It gets wilder, harsher, more "brural" with every minute btw. Die Anstalt also made something similar although much shorter: "Die Anstalt - Isis and the middle east explained." I think we need some Germans to make subtitles for more of these videos. 🤔
@theholk
@theholk 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with creating subtitles is that it is REALLY hard to translate the "joke" parts, because German uses tons of homonyms and synonyms that just don't translate. Example from this video "Pinochet ausgewiesener Menschenrechtsexperte" it's hard to translate that "ausgewiesen" in this context both means "documented" (the expertise) AND "expelled" (from chile) depending on interpretation. So the subs only use "proven expert", which is a joke in the cynical sense, but loses the wit of the double meaning. That's btw part of the root of "Germans aren't funny". A huge chunk of what makes German humor is so deeply rooted in the mechnisms and idiosyncrasies of the German language, that you can't help but lose half to 2/3rds of the joke(s) even when REALLY REALLY trying to do a meaningful translation. For instance when just going by the subs on this (not that they are bad), all that remains is the bitter and cynic part, but the mockery and ludicrousness gets lost.

Yeeeeaaaah - Volker Piepers was really a great political comedian here in Germany - not with easy humor but with really deep but also very harsh analytical approaches to many topics. He quit the job for enjoying his elder age but this was really his style for about 20-25 years. And he did pick up on almost anything he could deconstruct which was a lot. His style occasionally contained directly speech to the audience that is/was in his opinion part of the problem. In Germany he was much more known for his anti-capitalistic but very fact driven economical critique than for international politics but after 9/11 a lot wanted to show very clear how problematic the us foreign politics in many ways was... and still is.

@BoothTheGrey
@BoothTheGrey 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLevantin Klugscheißer 2.0 - wozu? Why? Comedian is the title - satire and political satire are special areas of the field. At least in an international discussion. In German we dont have a good title (Überschrift) for all comedian areas. You seam to hate the word - If you are German I can understand this, cause we again use the english term "comedian" slightly different (since the 90s) than it is used in anglo-american english - "comedian" is a bit "eingedeutscht". We Germans use the word usually for ease fun comedians - partly even to discredit this area of professional humor as "anspruchslos". This is not how the word is used in USA. You can also not quite translate "Kleinkunst" although in many translation books "cabaret" is shown. Factually this is wrong casue cabaret can be a real huge show. And the german word "Kabarett" especially "Politisches Kabarett" just does not apply to any translation completely - so its OK to take the word that descibes in english all fields of professional humor: comedian. To try to put a German language discussion in english under an reaction video of an american is really weird.

Also - as for how "edgy" Volker Pispers is - you're right, he IS, but that's nothing completely new. Post WWII Germany has a pretty strong, traditionally left leaning satire/comedy scene (here it's called "Politisches Kabarett"). For a long time there was a show called "Scheibenwischer", that pretty much set the standard for this kind of tone. Since the original cast of Scheibenwischer have died the show was discontinued at some point, but political cabaret (in the German meaning) still is pretty much left leaning by default (or so I believe), but usually has no problems at all pointing at left parties when they mess up too.
@Gallowglas
@Gallowglas 2 жыл бұрын
Scheibenwischer also was the ONLY TV show in German post-WW2 history, that was taken off the air in one single state bc the Bavarian government thought that one episode was too "edgy" to be broadcasted in Bavaria ... Bavaria also was responsible for this show being cancelled after nearly 30 years (1980-2009) after the BR (bavarian radio and television organisation) managed to take control of the show.

"Yes, comrad Putin, the Russian Army is in TOP condition! Very motivated! Yes, comrad Putin, the Ukranian people are WAITING for us to free them from democracy!"... Volker Pispers is not a comedian, but a "Kabertist" (don't even know if there is a english word for this field) Kabaret in comparison to Comedy is more focused to bring real life events into focus. The "funny" wording and comparisons to help keeping you thinking about it. Its especially useful when having topics none of the politicans want to openly discuss or acknwolage. to borrow a comment from another reaction video: think of Kaberetists more like a Jester before the King in the 1500s. only he was allowed to show the absurd reality to everyone else without getting decapitated for insulting the monarchy. VP was one of our best. he left the stage in 2016, after pretty much discussing the same topics in slightly different flavors (eg. the unemployment system was bad back then, it got discussed through and through back then in the 90s, in the 00s with Hartz IV it got even worse..) i can understand, you might get cynical if you stand on the stage for over 30 years and watch an audience aplauding the shortcommings of our politics you showed them, but the same audience is still voting for the same parties making the same decisions and nothing gets better. after all those years, i hope he has the nice and peaceful retirement he deserves :)

The line "Ohne Deutschland darf nie wieder ein Krieg ausgehen" is a incredibly well crafted pun on the post war slogan "Von Deutschland darf nie wieder ein Krieg ausgehen." ("There shall never again be war wages from Germany") What makes it special for german speakers is that "ausgehen" in the original sentence means "coming from" as in "the war comes from Germany". But in the pun that Pispers makes "ausgehen" has the meaning of "ending" or rather "going out" or extingish as in "Das Feuer geht aus" - "the fire goes out". So he just switched "without" for "from" and changed the meaning around. This is some high level wordsmithing that younger comedians don't do as well anymore and I think he is comparable to George Carlin or Bill Hicks. Today we have our fair share of Schwabs and Schumers tho =D
