People buy expensive clothes or brands because they're trying to buy status. Once they think they have acquired status with a piece, they believe lesser people who are unworthy shouldn't be able to just join the club just by buying a piece, they become elitist or gatekeepers 😂

Excellent video bringing multiple angles to analyze why people wear what they do. Clothing has meaning and people make so many assumptions based on how you look. As an older person I find it encouraging to see many younger folks adopting clothing styles that we used to have a hard time wearing decades ago, especially men. Still it takes a level of self assurance to go out and get peoples stares when you seem to break established rules.

A really thoughtful take on a topic that used to bother me. I work in tech in San Francisco, where there’s a uniform of Patagonia, Arcteryx, North Face, and Uniqlo. Anything outside of those is easily conspicuous. For a while I felt self-conscious for wearing uncommonly-cut clothes, horror tees, adorned loafers, or vintage Chanel bags. I’d get comments from people that hurt and kinda made it tempting to normalize my outfits. But I do think it’s just people reacting to things that are different to them, and it doesn’t mean you’re in the wrong. What’s interesting is they get used to a beaded shoe and sometimes look forward to seeing what you’ll wear the next day. I used to also have a strong reaction to looks I personally wouldn’t wear, but I’ve grown to wonder why people reach for things I wouldn’t, and I respect them if they’re feeling their outfit. Ultimately, my opinion shouldn’t matter to them, and vice versa. Do you.

The tech worker uniform is real, California used to be more divided, Patagonia was for LA and North Face was the bay area because of the location of their flagship stores. Everyone had the same basic black puffer jacket and matching vest. I always thought it was funny because they get all dressed up for the great outdoors to stand at their desk. In the 90s we had\ yogurt moms, they would put on their gym clothes and go for bananas foster frozen yogurt. Lots of purple and teal, pink if they were feeling frisky. When I moved to Atlanta I went bike shopping with Keens on and the first store was definitely the wrong one, I don't think I have ever seen a look of contempt like what was on her face when she literally glared at my shoes. I asked about backpacks and all they had were hydration packs.

I am one of those people. Fashion is naturally exclusive and you can tell when someone doesn’t understand their outfit. You’ve got to let people know so they can improve. kindly, though. haha.

I think as long as you have good hygiene and put some thought into what you are wearing you're ahead of most people. Lately the biggest arguments I see online is loose vs slim fits and trends vs classic items that "never go out of style".

What you say makes sense. People should genuinely help other people grow and learn, not be jealous and hateful, and they don’t even hide it. Most KZbin content creators become nothing more than creators of long ads for products that they don’t really care about, but there are better channels that help people discern on how to save money by making better choices. Not easy in sure.

On top of what people have already said, imo fashion is just contradictory by nature. If we can agree fashion is an expression or an art, then by nature people will criticize and may not agree with what you're wearing. People will judge simply because they don't agree with your tastes ("wear what you like, be yourself" - only to be judged hard). Snobs will rock designer everything and act like they're above you simply because they can afford something you cannot. A lot of people will hate on the current trend or whatever's "mainstream" and instantly label everyone that follows that trend "sheep." Could go on and on but the world of fashion is such a headache, it's no surprise the older we get, the less we care. How many of our parents are even in tune with fashion and current trends? Guarantee almost none of them are, simply because...at the end of the day, who cares. It's clothes. The fact that any of us can even participate in "fashion" simply means that we are, by default, more privileged than a lot of people, as most cannot even afford to buy a lot of clothes just for show. I'm finding myself more and more nowadays literally buying just what i like, even though i still tune into what's going on in the fashion scene (like me subbing to this channel), but i genuinely could care less about designers, staying "on trend" (e.g...currently not a fan of wide sweatpants), but at the same time I'm happy for anyone that's just TRYING to elevate their style in their fashion journey. At the end of the day, imo it just means you care and respect yourself.

Great video as always James! It’s ironic about men wearing pink because if you look at history, pink was only for men up until the mid 20th century. Fashion should just be enjoyed and you should wear what you want. Japanese fashion and people embrace individualistic expressions, that trends barely happen over there. The ones who are fashionable are precise, personal and with intention. For anyone who is interested in fashion, I highly advise them to visit Tokyo and Osaka. Heck, I sure did, they are very advanced, but pull it off in a way that is effortless and authentic.

Ive had this sort of thing happen towards me. Im in my mid sixties now. I dress a little different, and have my own individuality. Most people conform to what is fashionable at the time. A oerson can create their own style. It doesnt need to be expensive . I buy from thrift stores and i have done so for a long time.

I like that people wear different things. If everyone is wearing a certain sneaker, even if I already own it, I will not be wearing them for a while. Because I like to look different. And that doesnt mean wearing bright pink or something. Just different model, different shapes.. And my comfort is important. Some of my favorite clothes came from sales, like 20 euro pants.

As soon as anyone dive deep enough into a hobby, it will immediately become toxic and everyone in the community seem to hating each other and looking down upon anyone that doesn't have the same or similar stuff. I was originally geared towards the mordern sartorial style, right now more of a vintage style guy and I can tell you, especially in the shoes/boots section is a bunch of people that will look down upon you the moment they know your shoe have some synthetic materials inside of it, when your shoes have fewer stich per inch than their shoe, or your shoes comes from a more well known mainstream brands instead of a niche brands. They will also destroy you if they know your shoes is blake stich instead of goodyear welt or hand welt, even though most people would only wear dress shoes 2-3 times a year and it would take them like 10 years before needing a resole.

I think there are some rather critical views of fashion that I'm sympathetic toward, but I ultimately disagree with. - I can sympathize with the feeling that many fashion folks seem to be splurging on or making art out of something that is a basic necessity some folks have difficulty affording. In the same way, some folks feel fine dining and mansions are obsene when many people go hungry and struggle to find housing. However, I think craftsman will always want to see how far they can push their craft and I think it's possible to appreciate that craft without making it purely about status. Furthermore, the reason why some folks can't find affordable clothing, food, or housing is rarely because of high fashion, michelin star dining, or mansions. We should be more focused on our efforts toward equitability and not be distracted by hobbyists and craft lovers. - I can also sympathize with the negative feeling some may have about appropriating certain items without appreciating the culture certain items come from. If you dress like a midwestern union auto worker is it consistent for you to then be antiunion? If you buy and wear indigenous crafts and jewelry but are unwilling to stand up for the rights of indigenous people, how genuine is your appreciation? Again, I'm sympathetic toward this critique, but I just think it's never a great practice to assume someone's morals or values based on how they dress. - Another critique I often hear is in the sustainability dimension. And, I think a lot of this criticism is valid. Fashion is often not particularly sustainable. However, I think we need to disentangle our appreciation for fashion with our desire to buy everything. It's also appropriate to elevate and support sustainable ways to participate in this hobby.

Sharing some feedback: 1) Remember that Jeans were once only worn by laborers in the United States 🇺🇸. Young Americans, the son’s of the Greatest Generation, who served in WWII, started wearing them to rebel against their parents perceived stuffy attire. 2) Khakis, chinos, became mainstream after American WWII veterans began to wear them at Ivy League universities. These student veterans were not elite members of society. They only were able to pursue a college degree at an Ivy League because of the “GI Bill” earned by serving in the Armed Forces. The khakis were part if their military uniform and they repurposed them, pairing them with sports coats, and rep ties, etc. The Ivy Style was born. Now kept alive by the Japanese and brands such as J.Press, RL, and Brooks Brothers (BB quality is dropping after Private Equity acquired the brand) 3) OG tip for today’s generation. Wear what you like, while dressing appropriately for the occasion. Wear black tie (traditional tuxedo 🤵🏻) to a black tie event. Wear a nice Linen shirt with linen trousers in the summer when on holiday at an exclusive resort. Wear jeans and a Palaya Royale black tshirt and black boots or Converse to a Palaya Royale concert, etc 4) It’s perfectly normal for young bucks to follow fashion trends in their teens and early twenties 5) You can spend a lot of money on the latest fashion trends, and still lack style. Lack “sauce.” Why? In my opinion, it’s because one is being inauthentic, not being themselves. They are dressing for others, and not themselves. I rocked a $5 navy blazer, gap khakis, $50 penny loafers, a $20 white Oxford button down, and white socks, as a 19 year old frat boy in college. Got lots of compliments from the ladies and dudes. Why? I had sauce 6) Only the immature, of all ages, criticize what other people wear, with malice in their hearts 7) I have always loved the following looks and they influence me today: Ivy Style, Rocker Style, American Biker gang style, Punk Style (Ramones, Sex Pistols), Cholo Style, Italian Napoli style, Hiker Style, and the Christian Bale’s character style in American Psycho …personally, I’m not a fan of the Urban Rapper style Signed, Marketing Executive and retired Lieutenant Colonel of U.S. Marines

So I worked in the fashion industry! A little bit in designing, more in shopping from brands for the store and in the direct retail in the store. As a Mather of fact, Fashion is completely useless and nothing substantial. It is forgotten in two weeks. So after a couple of years wearing fire fits and allways being on the pulse of time I watched my friends who was an architect ore doctor… One build a school the other publiziert a international guide line for the treatment of hypernatremie. I got some nice picture on my instagram who look outdated right now. If you’re life circles only around fashion, change it immediately it is not satisfying for a lifetime. Foreigners notice this immediately and we find it laughable. No, it's not "built into us" and going to some silly faux " biker" movie with models won't tell you shit.

I get the issue with "workwear." It has to do with cost and availability. A lot of those guys struggle financially, and a Carhartt is viewed as earned. For some, that's half weeks' pay and brutal work to get there. Now they can't get one new one, and the used ones cost the same or more than new. There's also the issue of being a "Poser." I'd never wear a suit, biker, or cowboy attire because I'm none of these.
