It's quite telling reading lots of the critical comments on here. If a similar guest had told similar stories, but instead of being brought up in North London he had been brought up in JFK Heights in Liverpool and become attracted, at first, to Republican ideas, then joined a prisoners' support group, then got to know people from Belfast, then got tangled up with fringe elements of PIRA etc. Then the same people criticising Mr Portinari now would be talking about how our make-believe guest was a hero, man of honour, stuck to his principles, seen the light, making better choices, we've all done the wrong thing etc etc ec fucking cetera I've no idea whether El Portinari is telling the truth, though he's got a gift for a good story. However, the idea of him visiting schools to give talks just baffles me. What's he going to talk about? His whole appeal, and this applies to so many of these ex prisoners who are on the podcast circuit, is that he says he did lots of bad things. That's why he's invited on to the podcast. I'm sure that some kids would love hearing stories of shooters and doors being kicked in and birds crying in court and drug busts and prison fights and conspiracies and all the other cliches from the hard men. But he shouldn't be anywhere near a school.

the UDA killed innocent civilians, as all sides did. but only the UDA/UFF prosecuted, as a matter of admitted policy, the murder abduction of catholic civilians knowingly unconnected to politic, in an attempt to terrorise the community into rejecting the IRA. This continued through the 70s and 80s with the loyalist death squads until the intelligence community started feeding them information. Then they began to murder the families of Sinn Fein counsellors.

One man versus an entire army? No really surprised he turned that down. The PIRA back in the day had serious arms. Men. And community support. In the areas where they were based. Violence in Northern Ireland was reactive during the troubles. The loyalists might have been a lot of things. But they weren't stupid. They said they were fighting against the PIRA but in reality, they mainly targeted the innocent Catholic population. Maybe that's where Frank got the idea from. Chuck a grenade into a centre for people to meet from the Irish community. Aye defending the realm right enough.

They went to the ROI to eliminate a sinnfein councillor called Fullerton. They got quite a few shinners and supporters plus ops like cappah which resulted in 3 provos being shot dead by loyalists. The Pira and the Inla murdered protestant civilians at Kingsmill they shot the congregation at a church, they bombed pubs with no security forces in them just protestants. It was tit for tat for decades its sad the army went in to save the nationalists who trusted them in 69/70 then the Pira hijack the civil rights marchs which caused riots and shoot outs. The Provos could hide in the republic of Ireland after operations then sneak across to do it again loyalists couldn't do that. Its good the Pira gave in when they did they were riddled with informers the man in charge of hunting informers was one himself.

Got more sympathy for his support for the National Front than the UDA. The NF opposed immigration, supported Britains withdrawal from the EU and NATO, pursued economic protectionist policies and wanted tradionalist conservative morals promoted to support the community and family. The UDA had criminals and drug dealers within their ranks. And murdered innocent people. Both catholic and protestant. Frank's strong sense of patriotism drove him to support people who he thought were defending Britain's interests in Northern Ireland. Some of them embraced that sentiment. Imma new subscriber James. Love your channel btw. Out of coincidence, I’m reading Frankie’s book right now. Describes his real father as Anglo/Italian, and his mother’s father as Irish-Catholic. Obviously this guy’s politics are well though out and not just theologically nominal. He’s not one to claim “my Jesus is better than your Jesus.” I don’t necessarily agree with everything Frank’s done in his past, but I regret a lot of what I’ve done too. And like Frank I come from an Anglo/Italian family. Not sure what religion Frank’s family adhered to, but my elders were mostly atheists and agnostics with a couple of wacky evangelicals. Means fuck all. Anyway, this man is very well spoken, very raw, and very real. So far his story impresses me besides the Tottenham connection. 😉

Something likeable about Frank not a thug just a guy who will fight for his principles the sort of bloke who would help you out if you was facing a injustice. Some men won’t walk away from a tear up they enjoy it.I remember getting off a tube train and 2 rival football firms where chanting waving machetes at each other I was scared just wanted to get away I didn’t care about football.Frank fought for what he believed in my fight has been against poverty but sadly some problems are only resolved by violence. As kids we stood around the local chippy trying to look hard problem with that you had better be tough cause it ain’t long before trouble turns up.I do admire people like Frank who will stand up for his home turf.He seems to me like a man of loyalty who will stand by his people his Freinds.A good interview honest life narrative. The quagmire of Belfast politics dictates if you shoot at someone someone eventually will shoot back not for me very different if I was trapped in a conflict.

Always makes me laugh when people like this guy get upset about bombs in London. Yes, very horrible but who invaded who? Read the history of Ireland.
