I really love golden age cinema, I watch as many films from that era as I can, and what always strikes me is how many actors/actresses who WERE popular stars are almost completely forgotten now. In certain ways, culturally, it makes sense, but it's still kind of disconcerting. Granted, it's hard to gauge how "forgotten" someone is. I get most bummed out when I'm talking with someone at a party (or even online) who describes themselves as a "film buff", but they're unfamiliar with filmmakers from that era, like Don Seigel, or Robert Aldrich, or Douglas Sirk, all great filmmakers who were very active in the 50's. This hypothetical "film buff" will have seen everything Christopher Nolan ever did though, lol... Nolan's great. He does amazing work. I just wish more appreciation was felt (in certain corners) for cinema history. Which is why I appreciate a lot of the work Cinemassacre does.

@@UltimateGamerCC, as someone who also loves British comedy, I enjoyed the Carry On series, but they can be hit or miss. Carry On Abroad is easily my favourite, though some, such as Carry On Columbus, are so bad they are unwatchable. Even the legendary Rik Mayall could not save that train wreck.

@bowmaj8666 4 жыл бұрын
@@UltimateGamerCC Speaking as someone who grew up with the Carry On's and has a lot of nostalgia for them, I feel I should warn you (and I really hate to be "This Guy") that a lot of the humour could be seen as dated. For example, the most famous scene in Carry On Camping features a bunch of fully grown men watching a group of girls exercising in swimsuits, and they're still in high school. And one of them has their bikini top ping off! It's the kind of humour that a lot of people will frown on today, but screw them, it's still funny!
@bowmaj8666
@bowmaj8666 4 жыл бұрын
@@legionarybooks13 In fairness, Carry On Columbus came out way after the Carry On's popularity. There was no way it was ever going to recreate the series success. And they've been talking about bringing them back, but come on, how the hell is it going to work in today's PC obsessed culture? I have to admit though, Rik Mayall was a great choice for an updated Carry On, and probably had that film's best gags. "He brings news of what the Lisbonians are doing." "Well I don't care what they're doing, as long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the camels!"

@@MagnusPrimeZ Im not so sure that’s what was going on. I think it had more to do with the fact that a lot of these were produced in an era either before TV or early on in TV’s history. Back when theaters would present showings that included multiple films with intermissions and shorts and cartoons in between. A lot of the franchises he covers here were essentially like that eras version of television series. Once television came into the picture, eventually serial films and B movies went away as feature films were the only movies that were able to maintain market demand for theater going. But back before television effected the market, studios produced different kinds of films for different slots of the movie going experience.
