I think that the cannon should be for the army it would make scene as they are attacking and it would balance out that the castle has better defense but this this is an epic board game too bad there are not as many good ones as this around today

It actually says in the instructions that the attackers get the cannon and the castle gets the crossbow. I don't know why James played it the other way. It even has the cannon shooting at the castle in the box art.

Chronotyler I got this game on a birthday years ago. Still have it and I can remember never really paying attention to the rule book. Just kill everything in site. Admittedly I was kind of a dick when playing because from my POV it made more sense for the invading army to have both catapults since they have wheels and theoretically would be able to move with the army and I would insist that if you got the castle, you had to use the cannon and crossbow from a fixed position of your choice and you weren't allowed to move them. Also, you had to operate the projectile weapons from the floor, non of that picking the weapons up and doing high altitude bombing runs. All my friends wanted to use the castle, but I didn't really care. Personally I preferred being the invading army because it was more fun blowing chunks of castle walls apart. But because I insisted that the field unit have both catapults, it made it very hard to get insta kill on the general hiding in the castle if not impossible. You would think that this is a pretty bad handicap, but as it turned out, the cannon that came with my set was a complete piece of shit that had no real range on it. It frequently jammed or simply did not have enough power to hit anything unless the army was halfway up the field of battle. The cross bow was the best weapon overall and the catapults took some finesse and careful gauging of distance. Good times.
