Super Castlevania IV was published and developed by Konami in 1991 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s a side-scrolling action-platormer and is essentially a remake of the original Castlevania game for NES. The NES titles are favorites to most NES lovers (well, usually excluding Simon’s Quest). The SNES entry is largely considered the best in the series, and the one all future installments are judged by. It once again stars Simon Belmont on a quest to kill the prince of darkness himself - Count Dracula! Join James Rolfe and Mike Matei as they play through one of their favorite titles for the Super Nintendo!

9:18 This actually has an explanation. These candles are the work of Death. When he takes a soul, he traps it in a candle to light Dracula's castle. When the hunter breaks the candle, the soul gives him a gift - in this case, Hearts to power the hunter's weapons.

Have you ever watched the original remake by Hammer movies, where Christopher Lee is Dracula? It had a dark atmosphere, and changed the original story around, but I think Lee is superior to Bela Lugosi, except for the one line about the wolves; "Listen to them, the Children of the Night. Such sweet music they make." His Hungarian accent was awesome!!

The lightning striking the grave in the intro made my old crappy TV turn off automatically because it overloaded it. Sure burned it into my memory having the room plunged into darkness when it happened at night. Same for the T2 movie intro where the endoskeleton turns and fires at the screen and other flashing lights.

Old tvs did wild stuff, I remember a console type that would leave a round lit orb in the center of the screen when you turned it off and I would have all the lights off and touch the screen and sometimes it would static shock you or just follow your finger around the outside of it..... ☻

***** Yeah, it's fucking difficult, but I never.found it shitty (still don't). It may be a bad Turtles-game (a lot of the enemies are like WTF?), but it's an awesome action-platformer that really put your skills to a test. I had it for more than a year before I beat it, but when I did it was the greatest fucking feeling I ever had (at least for the 11year old me ;) ) :D

Castlevania 1 and 4 will ALWAYS be my favorite games in the series. 1 because the level design is as close to perfect as it gets, and 4 because the whip controls are amazing.
@Anthony-ku2bb
@Anthony-ku2bb 2 жыл бұрын
I wish they kept whipping at multiple directions in all of the Castlevania games. I understand that in the old NES days it wasn't possible due to hardware limitations. However, from the super NES 16 bit and in the newer consoles they should have kept this whipping in all directions in all of the other versions of Castlevania.

Super Castlevania IV is not only one of the best Castlevania games (Dracula X on the Turbo/PC Engine CD gives it a run for its money and I don't like calling it "Rondo", I've always just called it Dracula X) it's also one of the best 16-bit games in existence. And there are a crap-ton of awesome 16-bit games. Damn that was a fine time to enjoy videogames. I'm glad I can still enjoy them today and that the game systems still work perfectly well. It makes me wonder if stuff like Xbox 360 or PS3 will ever be looked at with the same kind of nostalgia. "Holy crap dude. Remember all o' them Call of Duties? That was a hell of a time 2 be a gamer. Thems were teh dayz." I guess we'll have to wait and see.

@somanymods
@somanymods 9 жыл бұрын
If you call it Dracula x people think you mean that mediocre snes "port" though. Castlevania iv might be a more fair platforming experience but rondo of blood captures the castlevania experience better, while not being quite as unfair as the nes games. Some of the Rondo Dracula x of blood sound effects really suck though which is odd, Dracula x on snes actually had better sound effects. It's a moot point though because gran turismo 6 is the best castlevania game.

I wonder if James has ever heard of Order of Ecclesia on the DS. That one had multiple areas that you could explore outside the castle so it was Simon's Quest revamped greatly. Also if you managed to get the right path the castle emerges,being a very huge area, creating the hype of confronting Dracula.

I love Super Castlevania 4, but I think the things I dislike about it the most are: 1) an abundance of boss fights that are easy or do not require critical thinking (There are exceptions). 2) THE BUZZSAW LEVEL (Screw that!). 3) some stiffness with the controls (minuet but noticeable). 4) lack of checkpoints in suitable areas. 5) sometimes the background palettes seemed too vibrant. These are just opinions, still love the game and is actually my 2nd favorite SNES title (after Super Metroid), but had some complaints, and wanted to see if anyone agreed with me. This seemed like the appropriate forum.

Such a classic. One of the earliest games for the SNES, and was better than many of the later games for the system. The playcontrol, graphics, sound, and level design were all top notch. Also, did you know the game is in stereo? The SNES component cable (yellow for video, red for right audio, white for left audio) could be hooked into a stereo system pretty easily. Those gigantic chandeliers you walk on had separate sound effects for swinging left and right; they sounded the same in mono-audio, but in stereo you'd hear them swinging side to side. Game was years ahead of its time.

For me, Super Castlevania IV will always be a remarkable game! It's not only my fav game in the series, but also one of my top-fav games of all time, period! The graphics are appealing and beautiful, the gameplay is fluid and responsive, the enemies are great, the soundtrack is fantastic (I listen to it quite often) - everything about it is just awesome! It holds up excellently, and I still play it at least a couple times every year... The ONLY negative I can think about is the framerate drops when there's too much for the console to handle on-screen at once; besides that, it's like a perfect game to me. What's also impressive is it came out during the very early days of the SNES, and it's still one of the best experiences on the console.

I feel like I'm alone in saying this, but I think CV64 should get more credit than it does. The controls are the biggest stumbling block (people get really caught off guard by the need to press and hold to climb ledges) but I honestly think it does *a lot* to give you a really cool atmosphere. The bits just outside and then in the castle really make you feel like there's a very foreboding air about the place, from the sewers to the hedge maze and so on. CV64 isn't CV4 and it isn't SOTN but I still think it's enjoyable in its own right.

Super Castlevania 4 is all about fast movements and quick reflexes. The NES trilogy is all about strategic movements and well-calculated accuracy. In the end, it's up to the player about what challenge he prefers. Personally, I can manage both SCIV and the original, without much trouble.
