My main gripe is the crew is so damn dumb that they didn't need an evil android or xenomorphs to die. They would have died off naturally, so the antagonists only sped up the process. Seriously! They don't have any backup plans, they're constantly arguing, they go onto a planet that they know nothing about without a damn space/environment suit, it's just crazy. And to top it all off, they don't have any extra crew in stasis! They were doomed from the start.

That's because people have retrospective bias and are unwilling to see modern movies in that light. You can trust that if a classic from the past came out today, people would tear it apart without a second thought.

because you can't. they have tried to turn movies from an art form to a paint by numbers system, because of greed and it shows. actors are worse, directing is worse, the scripts and plots are abysmal, an original idea hasn't been made into a movie in a long long time. the studios are relying on computers, and talented producers and editors to created what used to be interpreted by an actor, given direction, then artfully captured. all with people taking pride in their work. now it's all about the paycheck. and only about the paycheck. it's as bad as sports.

To be honest, the rubber-banding AI of the Alien killed it for me. I was sitting in a vent, and there was a corridor which wrapped around where I was on the right, connected to a room on my left, and the Alien kept walking around back and forth between the two with no goal forever, it just wouldn't leave (as if it knew I was there) but never entered the vent (I guess because he wasn't supposed to know I was there?). Anyway, I think it's bad because as soon as you hide for a while, it instantly stops behaving in a believable way, and you can't really be clever about it (unless we call using a noisemaker something "clever", or abuse the survivors when they are available). There is never a genuine moment with the Alien, where you hide and hold your breath and then it leaves the area, it always stays until the script tells him to leave.

And even thinking back on it more, we know the engineer DNA is a 100% match with human DNA, and that the mural on the ship was over 2000 years old. This pretty much implies that the engineers know what happens when a facehugger impregnates an engineer, and it will most likely look like the original Alien xenomorph. You guys are implying that David created the facehuggers, and there's absolutely nothing to back this up. He most likely discovered a method to create and foster the eggs, and knows that the ultimate creation is a Xenomorph+human hybrid.

I don't think they stole the idea of solar sails from Star Trek. i think this movie shows that ridley scott doesn't want to do more alien movies, it shows that he is into the creation and the origin of humanity and that he or maybe the producers pushed the alien factor into a movie that has nothing to do with the alien saga. You are partly wrong. Nothing was pushed onto Scott. Like James said, there was a plan to make a real Alien 3 with Ripley. And it was supposed to be directed by the District 9 director (Neil Bloemkamp), while Scott was supposed to continue Prometheus. There was already some story art and a rough draft of the script as far as I understand it and Sigourney was totally on board. I think the situation was that Scott was afraid that someone would take the franchise away from him and it being better than Prometheus. So he said, fuck that this is my baby...so he changed his mind. And him coming of The Martian, the studio gave him the double thumbs up for his movie. So it was more Scott pushing it on himself.

eh, District 9 is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies, but Elysium and Chappie were pretty mediocre. Dunno what happened, but Blomkamp can't write a decent script anymore. I thought Chappie would be batter with Terri Tatchell being a co-writer again, but nope. Honestly including fucking Die Antwood and having Hugh Jackman being this ridiculous 1 dimensional bad guy is what ruined the whole movie for me. It's a shame because I liked Chappie by himself, and the CGI of him was mind blowing. SO in other words, I doubt Blomkamp would have saved this Alien movie.

Also serious comment: I feel like there is a lot more Giger in the prequels though. People are not talking about about the Geiger. Shawls dead body was a Giger panting. The art on the walls were Giger. They are giving us the Giger. That you have to respect that about the newer films.

Heck, I think one of the biggest scrapped ideas was James Franco's performance in the movie. There's a scene in the trailer where you can tell he would be playing a key role but for whatever reason, they torch him in the pod and thats it! You can tell he would have had a bigger role because they opted for a a cameo bit in the picture frame for like 17 seconds… lmao, laaaaame.

i think alien and terminator are both a good bit better than their sequels. I think the sequels are among the best sequels ever made, but still there's a larger gap b/w the original films and the sequels than people realize...I think especially with Terminator 2 but also with Aliens that this is the case.

this movie was sooo disapointing....i primarily got into the ALIEN series to learn the back story of the xenomorphs and who created them so when prometheus came out they did that for me and i ENJOYED prometheus even tho alot of people hated it...but then this movie covenent was supposed to tell us more about the engineers and tell us how they created humans - well this movie FAILED at all of that...this was such a disapointment this movie was all about david and HIS creating story and solved nothing about the back story about tthe engineers

From the time the person who was face-hugged wakes up to when the alien comes out depends on the alien type. It appears to only take an hour or two from the time they wake up to when it pops out the chest with soldier aliens (regular). In Alien 3, Ripley seems to take a few days to pop, but that's because it's a queen. We never got to see a facehugger succeed in Aliens, and it seems from Resurrection, it is also only a few hours because they are all soldier aliens. We never get to see the queen which came from Ripley.

I like how everyone asumes they killed the xenomorph mythos. All that we experienced were David's hybrids, not the actual xenomorph it self. Also prometheus had wall murals depicting xenomorphs or xenomorphs-like lifeforms in the space jockey's spaceship. So we still don't know who or what made them or where they came from.

The time delay after a facehugger gets you is kind of critical. It's what set up the iconic scene of the original movie. Without the gestation time and the recovery of the host you wouldn't have the whole crew eating around a table to witness the xenomorph bursting out of the chest. Instead it would have happened in the med-bay with one or two witness.

This movie is Ridley Scott exploring more of the androids with hints at what's happening/happened on earth (Blade Runner). He initially said the xenomorph's story was over and decided to make a movie about the space jockey. After Prometheus, he realized people (and the studio) wanted more Alien in the movies. So I think he put enough Alien in this movie to get his budget, but tried to explore untouched areas in the franchise.

The way Dr. Shaw died by the David's hand was really disturbing. It would have been such an interesting continuation on how David's and Shaw's relationship grew until finale where she is killed and the engineers destroyed. A psychological thriller about how David descended into complete madness and disregard of any life that is deemed by him "Beneath him" (Waylon's notion)

Neill Blomkamp was wanting to ignore Alien 3 and 4 and do a sequel to Aliens. Sigourney Weaver is the one who actually approached Blomkamp on the set of Chappie. After doing voice work for the video game Alien Isolation, Weaver was really interested in the daughter character and wanting to go back to the Alien films. Fox was all on board and even Michael Biehn was willing to return as the character Hicks, but Ridley Scott wanted to fix what was wrong about Prometheus and so Fox decided to abandon the Neill Blomkamp Aliens sequel, in favor of Ridley Scott. Unfortunately, we will never have that film, since Blomkamp has moved on to another project.

You guys missed a major plot hole. It's mentioned that The Covenant is not designed to land, so this MASSIVE ship, with 2,000 colonists, tons of supplies, equipment, even pre fab housing, has just one dinky little drop ship that holds about 10 people? How long would it take to get everything planet-side? 50 years? What if they have to abandon ship? What if the drop ship malfunctions? Would they just be stuck on the ship forever?? That's like a huge cruise ship having only one 10 person life raft.

It was probably explained in the comments but to answer Mikes question regarding the gestation period for the aliens. These are a different species entirely from the traditional Xenomorphs hence the different birthing stages and growth. If you ever read the comics there is tons of different breeds and birthing of multiple species.

To revamp the series, they should make a new Alien that ignores it being a created thing. The best part about Alien and Aliens is that no one knew what the alien was and where it came from. I like the idea of it being an invasive pimitive species that came from a distant planet and was foolishly brought to another place. If they go back to that, it brings the suspense aspect back.

Regarding the use of hypersleep (or whatever you want to call it) rather than interstellar warp speed in the "Alien" series, in the novelizations of the original films it's mentioned that faster-than-light speeds have now become the norm, but even at these speeds it can still take years to get from Earth to these distant parts of the galaxy, hence the use of hibernation.
