Eating at Hattie B's. Best Hot Chicken in Nashville?

I eat at and review the original Hattie B's Hot Chicken location in the Midtown neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee. Hattie B’s serves hot chicken and other southern food staples. The restaurant has expanded with multiple locations in Nashville and beyond. I also review the Nashville International Airport location of Hattie B’s. I try the restaurant’s hot chicken and see if it lives up to the hype.

Most of the locals go to Bolton’s or Prince’s (they invented it!) but they have been on the decline. Hattie’s is decent and has more locations around the city but definitely the gentrified version of hot chicken.

Nice one, James ! The fried chicken looked good. The first time I ever ate fries, I was 12 years old, and in the Singapura Hotel in Singapore, December 1971. My whole family was migrating from Ceylon (Sri Lanka now) to Australia, and we stayed there a couple of nights. The fries were crinkle cut like in your video, and they are still the best fries I've ever had. The flavor of the potatoes they used was something else. Today, everyone does great fries, but the one thing that's missing is the flavor of the potato. And, here in Sydney, no one uses the crinkle cut, which is a pity. That Parthenon reconstruction looked amazing, especially the golden statue of my favorite goddess, Athena. Beats the heck out of Big Shrimps, Big Cows, Big Rams, Big Bananas, you name it ! Hopefully, you won the marathon, James ! All the best !

Hi James, as you were eating at the original I thought to myself, a great creamy slaw would be perfect to offset the heat. Bingo, at the airport, you ordered it. 🤣The chicken looked so mouth watering good. It's been years since we've been to Nashville, but now this is on the list of must try places. Your reviews are so enjoyable to watch. Not too long and always packed with good and honest information. I also love how you're spacing out the uploads and going from point A to B then to C. The best combination is to get the hot chicken with coleslaw and then have some bread with it and the barbecue beans. When you're eating hot chicken coleslaw is the best side dish. And have sweetened tea drink with lemon.

Interesting looking fried chicken, and I'm trying to think of what they are using as a coating, almost looks like bread crumbs. Cheddar grits with bacon are great when done right, sounds like these weren't. Crinkle fries, not a fan because they are grainy due to being previously frozen, rather have smooth and fresh,lol. Thanks James for the review on Hattie B's.

Just tried them in Birmingham AL. They give you a lot of food for the money and it was amazing. Just be aware that what they call hot, truly is hot. Medium is what I would have called hot. Even with the spice, the meat itself was brined well and flavor penetrated to the bone.

I worked in Nashville for a few years. I stayed at West End which is the Hattie Bs you went to. I never stood in line. I would put my order online and walk in the back door. Back to my hotel to enjoy. I also got the hot most of the time but Damn Hot sometimes. I always got a side of pickles (which cools the burn) and cole slaw. If you want original you need to Lyft over to the black side of town to get Princes. I always wanted to but after work it was often just not reasonable. A co-worker and I planned it for our next trip. Sigh. That was when covid shut down the planet and I never got back to Nashville at all. Sorry I missed that experience of the original.

Nice. Have you ever had Willie Mae's? This is supposed to be the best. They have one in LA now so if you went there, you could also try Howlin Rays. I'd be curious which you think is better of those two. I've worked on a hot chicken recipe for 2 years, after working on a KFC clone for 2 years prior. I've never had any of these but I know of my own 100 recipes which peppers I liked best.

@@Jamesnu Good point. Will wait for you to compare it to Howlin Rays. The thing for hot chicken with me is the leap from cayenne to habanero seems to be the major factor of heat levels. But there are so many other peppers that probably separate a real classic from just ordinary. I feel Hattie B's is probably just cayenne and for me, even Shakeshack uses more complex peppers if you look deeper into their recipes. :):)

Hattie B’s…. Their chicken pieces are amazing. Skip the airport location.

Definitely! I liked what I had at the airport, but that restaurant is nowhere near as good as the ones outside the airport.

Hatties is def not the best in Nashville. It used to be. They used to make the food fresh in each restaurant. Now it comes in the back door frozen and is not nearly as good. Also due to the feed the chickens eat, it has gotten "fishy" tasting. Try the og... Princes chicken. It's really good.

I wanted to go to Prince's more than Hattie B's, but the original location was a bit far and I didn't have the time to make the trek there, but the next time I'm in Nashville I'll definitely give Prince's a try.

I went to princes around when this video was posted. Simply disappointing chicken. The spice was bitter. Thebbreading was soggy. The fries overly salted. Hattie B's was better

Bruh, what do you for your day job that lets you go to so many restaurants (some of them $$$)?
@Jamesnu

My main job revolves around photography, but the money I earn from KZbin has really helped lately when it comes to going to some of the real fancy restaurants.

do you have an extra full time job to support this chanel or the chanel is self sustained?
@Jamesnu

Yep, there's no way I would be able to support myself with just my KZbin channel, especially living in NYC. However, it does give me some decent supplement income that really helps.

I missed it on that trip. I really wanted to go there, but since Hattie B's was closer to where I was in the city, I gave that a try instead. Next time, I'll definitely check out Prince's.

This is a tourist spot locals don’t go here. Prince’s is the original hot chicken spot but to be honest most people in Nashville don’t even eat hot chicken. Go figure how Nashville became known for hot chicken cause I have no idea.

Fried chicken isn't junk food. Chicken is full of protein, contains healthy fats, and depending on the cooking oil, your daily intake can still be managed, and believe it or not, potato whether it is friend or roasted is full of nutrients. "Junk food" are mostly snacks, like crisps or biscuits, with little to no nutritional contents, and high levels of sugar.
