We've had a Concord grape vine in our backyard for at least 60 years, according to our oldest neighbors. My Mom has made grape jelly from it almost every year for the last 40+ years. A couple of springs ago, we had the wettest spring in memory and lost pretty much the entire harvest to black rot. Fortunately, it seems to have mostly fixed itself. Makes amazing jelly.

That sounds amazing, I've got a somewhat similar story. The house my father grew up in had small wild strawberries for the longest time, and we had a very dry and hot summer a few years ago, which unfortunately killed them off :( luckily the raspberries survived though. My grandmother has been trying to grow grapes and peaches for the longest time, but they keep getting infection and dying

Do you have any info on about: Brazilian Jaboticabas. They wont survive N.E.winter , for that i have it a big pot indoor, lot water and light..8 years no fruit yet... can you advise?

you should make a clone of it to have a healthy starter for just in case could even keep it in a pot then put one in the ground to insure you dont loose the original plant

I’m growing grapes for a memorial for my pet bird who recently passed. I found a nice trellis with a bench that I have placed near her grave stone so that I can sit and watch her. Her favorite perch was always the one made of grape vine. Once the grapes grow long enough to prune, I’ll make some grape vine perches for the rest of my flock. And we can all enjoy eating the grapes together when it starts fruiting. Grapes are not toxic to parrots, they actually love grapes! 🍇

James, Ha, ha, u found something Tuck can't eat. A couple of years ago I was working on a house I was getting ready to sell. I had taken my RV and little Yorkies over to that town, and there were some wonderful old seedless grapes which I had taken cuttings and transferred to the house I live in how. I had parked a little way away from the grapes, thinking I was OK with letting the dogs out a few times a day. The wind came up and blew dried grapes in the direction of the RV and one of my little guys, Andy, went crazy eating dried grapes. He was such a scavenger, he would go around the house eating dead flies, etc. Since I had rescued him from a shelter in LA I didn't know his history, but figured he had lived on the streets for awhile and had to fend for himself. Anyway, when I found out he had eaten dried grapes I rushed him to the emergency vet, of course this happened on Sunday evening, and they kept him overnight, pumped his stomach, and gave him IV fluids. $1800 later I picked him up the next day and he didn't even have any ill effect. When I see Tuck eating stuff in the garden, I am reminded of Andy, he was the cutest little dog I've ever had, with big wide eyes. Thought U might enjoy reading the book I just wrote U.

We’ve had a Concord grape vine for approximately 20 years if not more. I have a super easy recipe for grape juice, which I make every year…absolutely no comparison to buying grape juice at the store. The vine takes almost no care and produces reliably and abundantly. A Concord vine would be a great start for people newly getting into gardening. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for sharing that grapes are not good for dogs! People YES…Dogs NO! I love watching Tuck too!

@@ajc2265 put one and a third cups of Concord grapes in a hot quart jar, plus about 1/3 cup sugar and fill with hot water. Process in boiling water bath for 20 minutes. It looks really attractive when done because the grapes are floating at the top. To drink, just hold the lid aside and pour out just the juice. Discard the actual grapes that are left.

Watching your video while eating my freshly picked concord grapes. If not for seeds, it would be perfect. I prune my grapes to just 4 arms and let them grow to 10-12 feet. I have an issue with hornets. They pierce through grapes for juice. Now I use bags. Works well.

@@diananazaroff5266 I got mesh ones from Ebay. There are a ton of them and come in different sizes. I can really tell the difference. Last year half of my grapes were destroyed by hornets. This year - none got ruined! You can also use them on fruits.

50% of the worlds grapes you say? China grow over 10 million tons, next is India with less than 3 million tons, Third Turkey with 2,3 million tons, 4th European Union with 1,7 million tons. USA is on the 5th place with 1 million tons of grapes. Maybe you ment 50% of the North american grapes.

The pruning in the beginning stages of the growth in order to focus on roots couldn't have been more prophetic. I have two grape vines - one grown from a cutting growing very well locally, with fruit galore. Every cutting I took struck, so I gave all but one away. The other is a plant I ordered from a nursery, and this one has not done nearly as well. It isnt a local.

Oh I have a purple Concord vine about 18 years old. Made jelly. Juice and wine. If you leave the grapes on vine to freeze then juice your gonna make a Ice wine. Amazing stuff. Be careful this variety around your pup. They are poison to dogs. He's a joy to watch in your garden. My pup only wants to pee on everything vs eat. You trained the little guy well

My Dad just passed away, and he has a small vineyard. I am going to say probably 120 vines. He loved his garden very much, and I am the only one interested in making sure they do not die. He has had a few of them for about 45 years. My step mom is selling their place. My Dad has mostly Concord grapes. For some reason he had 2 big bags of sulfur. Ii read that a major use for sulfur is a supplement for grapes. Do you know anything about that?

I just purchased a new grapevine this past week. Living in GA, I have trouble growing grapes (I've already killed several types, lol) other than muscadines - which I don't really like. The variety I purchased is called Razzmatazz and is hybrid of muscadine and a table grape (seedless and sweet with muscadine vigor). It's in a 2 gal pot and actually has clusters of grapes on it already, so I'm encouraged. This one requires full, Southern sun, so I'm prepping a spot for it to grow now and will be planting it soon. Maybe I'll get lucky with this one, lol. Looking forward to your pruning video...

@@frankdavidson9675 Pierce Disease kills many grapes in GA because we don't get enough cold to kill the virus. We can grow Muscadine and Scuppernog, but many other varieties don't survive unless they're Pierce resistant. The only table grape I've found that is resistant is Razzmataz. Giving it a shot...

@@frankdavidson9675 Frank, the point is that I don't LIKE muscadine or scuppernog grapes. I want table grapes. I've already been working with another grower in GA, Willis Orchards, and the only Pierce resistant varieties they carry are wine grapes. I've looked at the Ison website and they don't mention anything about disease resistance in any of the descriptions for their grapes, so I'm guessing they aren't Pierce resistant. I've already lost a number of vines and don't care to keep tossing my money down the drain.

If you have some space left try growing 1 or 2 wild grape vines. They're very hardy and disease resistant, requiring minimal maintenance (not even pruning unless you want to limit their overall size). Vines are fast growing and very prolific, so they're often used for decorative purposes (on perimeter fences or shade canopies). Fruits are tiny compared to domestic varieties (about the size of a corn kernel) and kinda sour even when fully ripe, but have a very nice strong flavor and pack a lot more vitamins and antioxidants. Whole fruits can be added to salads or cocktails, but it's the juice that's the most enjoyable (squeezed, not blended, as seeds are very bitter if cracked open), you can add it into any kind of drink and preserve long term by freezing as ice cubes. From improving the taste and flavor of lower quality wine to spicing up tea or mixed fruit juices it's an ingredient well worth keeping at hand in the freezer.

evil birds got to my first grape harvest this year. I grew muscadine and tasted only a few from 1-2 bunches. I was robbed!! Peacocks ripped up my greens and cabbage. Squirrels, beavers, butterflies, caterpillars and deer on the attack.

Put out a bird bath and some grapes in an open area. Birds are more after hydration than the sweetness. They're just thirsty Lol
