James! When I first watched a video of you a month or so ago, I cracked up. How could this tall lanky joking man be a serious gardener? But I watched for the entertainment. Well , hats off to you. You are a spectacular gardener and I’ve learned so many things from you and Tuck! You not only help with issues in the garden, and give pointers right up to harvest, but you remind me to savor what I’ve grown and give thanks for all those growing blessings around me. I love the Food Forest and I am now subscribed. I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and now this ‘cheesehead’ is retired in Kentucky where the summers are hotter, more humid and last nearly forever. Thank you for all you do and the wonderful way that you do it! 💕🌺💕

In the past I have spread out my peppers when planting in raised beds. After receiving a tip that peppers like to 'hold hands' (aka be closer together), I tried planting them about 4 per sqft.WOW! What a difference! They far surpassed productivity from any past growing season. I have never 'topped' or pruned my peppers plants- so unnecessary! Great video. Can't wait to watch more.
@dustyflats38322 жыл бұрын
They appreciated the shade each provided. Good job! Mine would be a bit too big to plant 4 per foot though, but you are much farther North than zone 5a and if it works grow it.
@karentucker2161 Жыл бұрын
Ok, that's good to know. I was concerned that I did mine too close... they are growing but wondering about sprouting.

Peppers do better in pots for me than they do in-ground for some reason. The jalapeños stay small and have almost as many flowers and fruit as they do leaves , love it!

James. As always I enjoy and admire your videos. You’ve definitely got one of the best gardens on UTube. One thing, due to lack of space, I plant my chiles in a very rich 3 year old lasagne bed. I plant them very close together, almost like a mixed Chile hedge. The hedge shades all the plants, which is helpful in warm environments. I am an in s. Oregon, a very hot summer climate, and The harvest starts early and ends late. It is also abundant. Thanks again for your great teaching skills. Oh, also have 3-4” of straw mulch on top. But never right up against the individual plant bases.

In my experience, the only difference between topping and not topping peppers is the growth habit. That is to say, topping makes the plants bushier, which is nice if you are growing without supports, or in a windy area.

I’m glad it doesn’t get to hot here in Bellingham Washington. It was over 90 degrees 2 times last year in these parts. I remember those 2 days man CRAZY. It was late summer in August and September. The weird part is it was 91 just the other last week. Very noticeable difference even for PNW where you can get light to mild rain, sunshine, hail and snow in 1 hour.

YOU ARE CORRECT!! Peppers need some shade! Thank you for giving everyone the best tip to growing peppers. They won't set fruit when temps are too hot. They need even moist soil not wet or rock hard dry. If you can't plant so they get some afternoon shade try 30% shade fabric or according to your climate. I plant mine along a cattle panel run North to South and peppers on the East and tomatoes on the West. They thrived! Actually whenever I found a healthy nightshade weed it was in moist soil somewhat shaded.
