I was in this video, hired as background to play one of the mourners at the cemetery (dark suit). Before the shoot, the background actors were in the wardrobe trailer and James Taylor walks in to introduce himself. It was a surprise. He took the time. After the shoot we were back in the trailer signing out and he came back in and thanked us all for being there. He was very gracious and thoughtful. It's always a thrill to meet someone like James Taylor who has achieved great success and fame to find out he is also a really nice person.

I have a couple connections to this video. An old friend of mine was Kate Markowitz boyfriend for several years some time ago. She's one of JT's backup singers and has been for many years. Met her for the first time at a wedding in Tucson and she's also in the video with dark shades and beige colored dress. I also babysat for Barbara Hershey's son named 'Free' at the time in early 70's while on location when she filmed a western drama called 'Last Hard Men'. After filming I gave her a ride to the airport from Rio Rico, AZ to Tucson in a 55' Pontiac Star Chief listening to tunes on an 8 track tape player. I discovered this video by accident a few years ago and couldn't believe the similarities to my experiences.

For my brother, James, who I took in his wheelchair to see James Taylor, in Tampa a less than two years ago. I sat with him listened to 'Sweet Baby James'. My brother passed away a few months later. His life was one of music and gentleness and being as good of person as he could be. This song and all of the music of James Taylor reminds me of my brother, our mother and our father every day. Their lives and their passing made a big difference to so many people around them.

This song and album have been very special to me for so many years. In 2001, my sister passed away after a horrible battle with breast cancer. She was an absolute angel who reached out and cared for those passed by in life. And she loved all the best music (CSN, Jackson Brown, Joni Mitchell, Elton John) and passed that love along to me and my brother. After her death I was going through some of her things and found the Hourglass CD in her collection. She love JT. In fact, many years previous I can remember sitting as a young teenager listening to her "Sweet Baby James" album in her house. I grabbed that CD out of her stuff and took it as a little piece of remembrance of her. It is impossible for me to listen to this song without seeing her and her smile and smiling myself as a shed a tear or two.

I used to jerk my sausage daily . Then i met a girl . Settled down bought a small house . A small dog and a old speed boat . I kept meaning to fix it up . 4 decades past and i said you know what im gonna do it up . I cleaned the rot and put a engine in ect ect . Named it . In good time i launched it after 11 months of hard work and i sailed it across the ocean . One night i sat in the open sea and im telling you i saw a fluorescent octopus fly out of the ocean carrying a scroll. It dropped a page and i instantly dived into the sea to retrieve it but i couldnt get back onto the boat and a storm set in . Long story short i got stranded at sea for 29 days . I washed up to a small island were i ate wild fruits that made my hair grow back. I was resuced by nudest pirates and i walked tge plank a few times but when i returned i found my wife im bed with my boss . I said wtf is going on here and he said watch and see . Made me mad but i did watch it and i liked it .

What a powerful song and video. I just found out two of my old girlfriends had died in the past month at only 60. I was a bit shaken, but when I watched this video I wept. What James is saying is that wen cannot avoid death so maybe we should just be happy with the life we get. Moving on. JT is such a wonderful songwriter and his songs move me to tears 35 years later. His music is really immortal, one of the greats. Fine man for good causes too. Oh and Yo Yo Ma, no wonder. JT has worked with some of the finest, a collaborator and loner at the same time, a singular man. He does a few covers but doesn't remind us of anyone else. He is a truly original artist. But yo JT, do another Motown cover. g
