This song, these lyrics, this storyteller, this acoustic guitarist, this singer, this artist. This is James Taylor. Wow...

LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. I was in the midst of a severe clinical depression when this album came out in 1997. I would not see daylight until Christmas of 1999. This song hit me viscerally like no song had for a very long time. Watching this video today for the first time, I got goose bumps. I will always associate this song with that horrendous period of my life - but it will always be one of my all time favorite JT compositions, for its unmatched poignancy, imagery, TRUTH. Every critic who ever wrote a caustic or dismissive line about James Taylor as a songwriter should visit this song and consider how high he set the bar, and how few the 20th century songwriters are who meet it. +missinglowell I've been following JT's music since my father brought home his first album when I was ten. I learned playing guitar to his records, know all his songs. This may be his best song of all time. Written with the challenge of honoring his late brother Alex. Thank-you for sharing your powerful story missinglowell - all the best to you. Carry on.

He has a way of being what I call a singer/songwriter/psychologist. I also find this song one that resonates with me on a level that has also healed me in some way.

It’s a great song, and I think you hit the nail on the head with that single word “truth”. As James explains in his spoken introduction, it’s not quite literally true-his factual brother Alex becomes a fictional woman named Alice-but it’s emotionally true-forthright, and honest.

I remember watching this live and being incredibly impressed with Cliff Carter's stellar, simple piano. Wish JT would use this kind of production more often instead of his pop band sound. What a great song.

Such a shame about the footage break, but still incredibly precious because of James' intro. Amazing material of the most amazing singer-songwriter. Thanks for this.

@organikthree65 Hello Org, I wish I could. I originally posted the full version of this track but Viacomcorp objected and youtube took it down. All that remains is this truncated version. The full version is wonderful but I'm not permitted to post it. Ken
