In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert," James performs his song "Carolina in my Mind", on the popular BBC series "In Concert" on November 16, 1970.
"In Concert" was produced by the BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time. In November 1970, James was 22 years old and his second studio album "Sweet Baby James" had released earlier that same year.

Carolina in my Mind - James Taylor
LYRICS
In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Karin she’s a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shine
Watch her watch the morning come
A silver tear appearing now
Well, I’m cryin’ ain’t I
I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Ain’t no doubt in no one’s mind
That love’s the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
Hey, baby, the sky’s on fire
I’m dyin’ ain’t I
Ain’t I gone to Carolina in my mind
In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
Can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Till I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Dark and silent late last night
Think I might have heard the highway calling
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
And signs that might be omens
Say I’m goin’, I’m goin’
Gone to Carolina in my mind
It’s with a holy host of others
Standing round me
Still I’m on the dark side of the moon
And it looks like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me
If I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
In my mind I’m long gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine
I said can’t you just feel the moonshine
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
So I’m already gone
I’m gone
Say nice things about me
I’m gone
You’ll have to carry on without me
I’m gone
Oh, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
I’m gone
Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind

The bbc really knew how to record these artists all those years ago. Their sound engineers were just leaps above at this time. I’d love to dig into their archives, they recorded Genesis in 1970 and they are on KZbin and also sound excellent.

I was an angry 16 year-old dude in 1981 after my Dad (who was in the service) was transferred from Hawaii to Washington, D.C. I left a job I loved, a school I knew and a bunch of good friends that I would never see again. I left paradise for the cold Maryland suburbs and was plunged into a foreign environment full of strangers. I was pissed. This song spoke to me and told me that someone understood how I felt. It really meant a lot to me and helped to teach me the power of music -- and art, in general.

A pure pleasure! Who were the lucky concert-goers who got to be there then? Now we are all the lucky ones to revisit nearly 50 years later, and we still have James even now producing and playing, often with his lovely family. I am beyond grateful that you are putting up these cherished videos.

I was 36 days old when he did this concert.... grew up with a mom who sang James Taylor songs to me... the music of my childhood. This song is just so mellow and having spent the first part of my life in South Carolina... well, it takes me right back to those young and carefree days when I hadn't a worry in the world.

This man never fails to bring me to tears. I have a connection with the state of North Carolina because of my friends there. I often envision going there and seeing them. I'm always going to Carolina in my mind. James is just so wonderful and talented, it's amazing that a troubadour can encapsulate exactly how you feel without having the foggiest clue who you are. God bless you, Mr Taylor.

1970 i was a little kid living in South Carolina. Our older neighbor was a shy tall 19 year old with dark hair. He was drafted into the psychotic war in vietnam and was killed literally 2 weeks later. I can still see him in my mind, i have always once in a while throughout my life seen him among the bushes and foliage in their yard next door . At random times his blurry image comes to me, all these years. 19 years old he was, i can still remember his mother coming home from his funeral dressed in black with a black veil covering her face. We had thought she was mean as young kids me and my siblings, but we felt so bad for her then. The images have been stuck in my mind forever “War is a place where young people who do not know and do not hate each other kill each other, because of the decision of old men who know and hate each other, but do not kill each other ”. Erich Hartmann

So much music from one man and a piece of wood. Listening to this song I am immediately transformed back to the University Co-op I livid in way back in the early 70s. Sittin' on the floor of the kitchen with 10-15 other people, passing the wine bottle, passing the roach clip, listening to your albums. Thanks for being part of a wonderful memory and thanks too for taking me back there again.
