My second favourite of 2020. So quotable, so stylish, and just so much fun. Guy Ritchie really is at home with this type of film. He's like a British Tarantino with his dialogue. The look of excitement on your face when Colin Farrell makes his appearance. So delightful. I am intrigued by Matthew McConaughey's character and his relationship with his wife. There is so much I want to learn about both. But the movie only gives us bits and pieces of information. Have you noticed the the little twitches in Charlie Hunnam's performance? They seem to occur when his character, Raymond, is upset or nervous. I love that detail. YES to Snatch.

I love the film takes it's time in the beginning to establish these REALLY STRONG characters with many facets- You can't help but be invested in anything else having to do with them. It's a bit like Snatch, in that the various mad characters aren't often on the same side, until a fateful moment in the story that proves more beneficial than anything they've gone after previously. Snatch feels more regimented, with the Boxers, the Gypsies, the Organized Crime, the Pawn Shop Owners - Who could you root for in such a level playfield of these characters who end up the ones tricked, like in the beginning, by just about everyone. I dunno, love how fragmented and separate different story elements feel- I wish he had more time to rehearse with the actors, I dunno.

I just saw this film yesterday and I thought I'd chime in with a recommendation. The Gentlemen is basically Guy Ritchie doing his version of the classic British gangster flick The Long Good Friday (1980). It's been years since I've seen it and I didn't twig to the similarity until the end of the film when it hits you over the head. The setup (gangster wants to go legitimate) is not particularly unique to TLGF, but the final scene in it IS. And one of the last few scenes of The Gentlemen is a direct homage to it. I'd be surprised if others haven't mentioned it in the comments. Check it out, it's a stone cold classic that launched the careers of Bob Hoskins and Pierce Brosnan.
