I think you said it perfectly: above all else, the VIBES in the movie are IMMACULATE, pretty much from start to finish. Dark but lighthearted, campy but gothic, clever yet dumb. Like a teenage 80s fever dream.

Not only has Tim Cappello been tearing it up on the sax and other instruments for decades, with acts like Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, and Tina Turner, but he is nearly 70 and still going strong (musically AND physically). He was in the vampire-themed music video for GUNSHIP's "Dark All Day," from a few years ago, and their just-released music video, "Monster In Paradise."

Fun fact: The actor who plays the grandfather is Barnard Hughes. He played both Dr. Walter Gibbs and Dumont, the IO Tower guardian program in the 1982 film TRON. He also played Dr. Aurelius Hogue in the 1991 film Doc Hollywood. :) Also, there's another vampire film I'd recommend that was released around the same time and was mostly forgotten. It's called Near Dark (1987), and I think you may like it. It's directed by Kathryn Bigalow (of Point Break, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker fame), and stars Lance Henikson, Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Jennette Goldstein and Bill Paxton. So glad I was in my late teens in1987. This was part of an amazing few Years, for classic 80's Blockbuster films and future cult classics, such as this and the under rated 'Near Dark'. We had 'Predator', 'Evil Dead 2', 'The Princess Bride', 'RoboCop', 'Hamburger Hill', 'The Brave Little Toaster', 'Raising Arizona' and 'Good Morning Vietnam'; Just to name a few. In fact, you could probably do a whole series, based on that year's Top 20 IMDb rated film's alone. There is also an IRL tragic story behind the young main lead actor. Sad, but worth the look into. Peace All

Far as 80s vampire movies go I think Fright Night is my favorite because it shows more love to the classic monster movies, but Lost Boys is a real close second. Sam and the Frog brothers are hilarious, it's got great action, the vampires are cool and also a legit threat, and the dreamy cinematography is excellent. My only complaint is that Star could have been more interesting. I used to go to Santa Cruz all the time as a kid and had no idea the movie was filmed there, so watching it for the first time as an adult was an awesome surprise

Between this and “Stand by Me”, my younger self saw Kiefer Sutherland as the ultimate BAMF. Really wanted his wardrobe too.

"Did he just get scooped up by a pterodactyl?", has to be my favorite reaction comment ever spoken.

The book from middle school you were thinking of was probably Peter Pan. The screenplay grew out of a discussion revolving around, "what if the lost boys from Peter Pan were actually vampires?". It kind of fits...in both cases, these were youths who would never get sick, never grow old, never die. "Stylish" perfectly describes this movie. MTV Films didn't happen until 1991, but I've always thought of "The Lost Boys" as the first MTV picture. Between the soundtrack, costuming, set pieces...one of the most '80s movies ever made, in all the best ways. And I still hold that Kiefer Sutherland played the best movie vampire of all time: the perfect blend of cool & intriguing with dark and creepy.

Yo this is so trippy. This is one of those DVDs I grew up with and watched a million times as a child, but none of my friends have never even heard of. Thanks for watching. This was a nice trip down memory lane.

This came out when I was in High School. 1987 with this and Near Dark were the rising edge of the vampire and goth stuff that happened in the 90s. Love this movie to death.

One of my fav films. I love the soundtrack too. It's weird seeing people watching it for the first time, then I remember how old I am lol.

I'm glad you mentioned the set design and style of the film. It's dense and feels authentic. Grew up watching this film, shout out to the soundtrack!

A great film. I have loved it from the first time I watched it. As for the Huskies, there were two identical dogs used, one tame, used for close-ups with Sam, and the other was more active/vicious, and was used in scenes like attacking Mikey trying to enter the bathroom, and later the vampire near the bath.
