Through the game he wanted to cut off from his past, but finally he realized that's impossible, because the government agents would use him as long as they wanted to. In the end, he understood that he is thereason why the family is unsafe. So he came out of the barn and went to certain death, to sacrifice himself so that Jack and Abigail have enough time to escape. This is exactly the same thing that Arthur did for John.

Killing his "brothers" and "Father". Riding his horse back into his little farm near blackwater to spend the rest of his life to be with them.
