Me and a friend was was help me put rebuild my cylinder head. We finished with the cylinder head then I realized I needed ground strap so I went to my local auto store to get new one. He took upon his to start torque the head bolts and broke one. Please tell me what I can do

Your right about those bolts i am on my second time tearing the motor apart because of that ...never again...lol

Andrew J that is hardly possible, they make chain blocks, or cut a piece of wood to hold chain tight that goes to the head between the tensioners, and carefully remove the bolt on the cam sprocket, after marking it's position, then as you the sprocket and chain off the cam, the cam may rotate from valve spring pressure, but not much, but retweaked with a backup wrench on the camshaft at assembly, then the sprocket can go down a bit and out of chain and rest slacked part of chain down, and should be able to start unbolting the head. Problem: When you try to remove head, you may need to mallet it a bit and this or raising the head can disturb the chain and lose the timing behind the timing cover. It is possible, like Houdini possible, yet have a towtruck on standby, and dont get mad, you truck will be gone for two months but all those other gaskets will be changed and ordered one by one while your truck sits, gutted and rusting.

On a 3.7 can I take one cylinder head off and put it back on without removing the timing cover and chain? It looks like I could and long as I time it all
@Canvideo7 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible. On passenger side head. Rotate the engine so that all the valves are closed so the cam won't turn. Do not rotate the crankshaft until the cam sprocket is reinstalled. Mark the chain with the timing mark on the sprocket. Remove the sprocket and use a snap strap keep the chain tight. Remove the two slide bolts and tie the slides together sandwiching the chain. Stuff a rag in the chain cavity when removing and installing the small head bolts. Installing the head is a little cumbersome with the chain and two slides. Torque head bolts. Tie the chain with a snap strap to keep tension on it and untie the slides. place the camshaft sprocket in time with the chain you marked, and use a large punch to hold the sprocket onto the cam as it likely won't go on. Install the slide bolts. The tensioner may have to be reset by using a long stuff wire bent in a square U about 1/2 inch wide and deep. The reset hole is on the back side of the tensioner in line with the ratchet shaft so you have to pull the hook into the release hole to disengage the ratchet and use the punch through the sprocket into the cam to tighten the chain, or leave the lower slide bolt removed and pry up on it without breaking it. The sprocket should then be able to slide on the camshaft In line with the dowel and install the bolt.

only thing that is scary here is the head was not resurfaced.
@mph58967 жыл бұрын
Hardly ever do I have heads resurfaced. Clean them up, check for flat, have them pressure checked if it previously overheated and install with new gasket and bolts. Good to go
@markrich32716 жыл бұрын
If the heads flat then its flat there is no need to resurface a flat head.

Hmmm... I'm replacing my wife's engine. Should I stretch the head bolts once like you said, or twice like the shop manual says? I think I'll stick with the book.
