A good tip to help establish communication with your fiance about wedding planning and expectations is to each take a few minutes after the engagement to identify your priorities for the wedding, whether it's just one thing or multiple things. We agreed to chose one thing each that was most important to us that the other one couldn't give you shit about. I chose photography, he chose food. Then we ran through all the other major categories and shared our expectations for each (music, decor, venue, ceremony, guest list, etc). The whole conversation took 15 minutes and made planning so much easier! I know he doesnt care about decor so I ask my bridesmaids for input instead of him, whereas the guest list is an ongoing compromise. Our communication so far has been great!

I told mine from early in the relationship that I expected it by 5 years. Money and ability to afford a ring were not relevant to the proposal process in my opinion; I said "if you haven't figured it out by then, then I'm going to have to move on and find someone who does want to be with me forever." lol. I'm a bit headstrong I guess. I also took him to a jeweler where I had found a ring set I liked (sidewalk sales in a small town where we live) and said "I like this, I'm going to take a 15 minute walk so you can decide if you want to do this or not." He did buy the ring set, but then in a super show of romance, gave me the paperwork for it because he said he would lose it.... We are ULTRA romance here. We did leave it at the jewelry store though so that the proposal could still be a surprise even if the ring wasn't. 8 months later I learned he still hadn't even picked up the ring from the store... WHAT. We went down there and I made him pick it up, lol. 4 months after that, he still hasn't proposed. I ended up bawling one day because we went to a friend's birthday dinner and the friend confided in us that he was going to propose to his boyfriend. On the ride home I bawled and told my guy I didn't understand why it was so hard to ask me, lol. We get home, I'm still crying, he leaves me to cool down and change into lounge clothes, I turn around 3 minutes later and he's there in his underwear only with the ring. -- Totally not how I ever expected to be proposed to (I worked with a girl who was proposed to IN ITALY) but you know, it's us. We have a two-year engagement and have our wedding for Sept 2020. #WorthIt

Regarding the groom in the wedding planning process... I did the opposite! I assumed he wouldn’t want any part of it, so when he saw me stressed or frustrated, he was like “what can I do?” and I literally had no answer. Literally had to go, “can I think about it and tell you tomorrow?” That was a huge wake up call that I wasn’t actually offering him 1, the opportunity to be part of the day, and 2, the credit that he can handle what I threw at him.

My top three wedding stressers are 1. finding a venue in Boston that fits our budget. 2. finding a wedding coordinator that I can afford. 3. Saving money to put towards the wedding. Our engagement story is we walked down the garden stretch where we had our first kiss and for the entire 15 minute he told me why he loved me and every good thing he's ever thought about us and our future. Yes I did cry. He then proposed and my family jumped out from behind a statue and had recorded the proposal and we went out for cheesecake.

I told my very sweet and calm mom that we weren’t doing the garter toss, and she was “WHAT?! WHY? of course you’re doing it!” like I didn’t know/expect how passionate relatives can get about traditions.. and that can be kinda stressful to feel like you’re letting someone down. (The reason we aren’t doing the garter thing is I don’t feel comfortable with him going under my dress in front of everyone? and we don’t even understand what it means.. like is it supposed to represent him going down on you? The tradition is just so weird to us haha)

for anyone curious, the garter toss tradition arose a long time ago. it was superstition that having a piece of the wedding gown was considered good luck so when the bride left people would literally try to rip her dress. the garter toss arose as a way to appease the superstitious guests in a dignified way lol

The ONLY thing I want that she doesn’t care for is a professional Photo Booth. It’s a way to keep guests entertained while grazing and a keepsake for her instead of a “guest book” that you may or may never look at. Oh! Stressors: guest list & the"obligation" to invite certain family members.
@aislynnskala5523
@aislynnskala5523 4 жыл бұрын
Trust me, I feel you. What I've found is easiest for me is to make a list of people that are must have. People like both of your parents, siblings, best friends, grandparents. Then, you make a SECOND list of people you would like to have there. These could be family friends, possibly co-workers, "happy acquaintance" relatives. And from there, take the sum of people being invited and use that as a "limit". If anyone has any questions or pressures, just repeat that you're trying to keep your wedding smaller/more personal. At the end of the day, this is about you and your person. Not everyone will be happy but what is important is that you're happy. Anyone who thinks your happiness is less important than their idea of how neccessary someone else is at YOUR wedding isn't invited for a reason.
@Tekla678
@Tekla678 4 жыл бұрын
Had that problem too. But figured out that i'd rather invite them- i mean the obligatory, close family members that i cannot really stand-, and try to be with them as little as possible, than to have to listen to not inviting them for the rest of my life. Anyways, since we are not really close and do not have hardly anything in common, they probably will not stay long, if they come at all.

I am not inviting half of my mom’s part of the family (siblings their spouses and children) family I’ve honestly have grown up with. However, I’ve made it very clear to my parents, I am not inviting people who don’t check up on me/my life every so often, or shoot a text, or when at family gatherings DONT take the time to ask me how I’m doing how’s life going, etc. Because it’s clear they couldn’t care less about me so why spend the money on them at my wedding. In addition to that, I am having a destination wedding to facilitate the idea of having a smaller guest list and intimate wedding. Because it would be far more challenging if I got married in our hometown.

My venue has a chapel and reception hall together (and bridal suite to get ready in, and a grooms room!) they do all catering and bar service except making the cake. They have a coordinator for me and they provide and set up and bus the tables. Yes, all inclusive has a convenience fee attached, but I'd rather pay someone else to deal with things that I wouldn't think of. Is having to think about who will bus the tables and clean up a DIY wedding thing? I've never heard of this before.

Also talk to your fiance and see if his parents are expecting to pay for something. I hope this helps a little :)

Hi Anna, when I got engaged my fiance and I began to discuss what was really important for us in a wedding. We decided there were 40ish guests we absolutely HAD to invite and we wanted it to feel intimate so we stuck to that number. My fiance really values full meals, and neither of us love DIY, so a full sit down meal was something we wanted. But we are not party people, so we decided on a lunch reception in a private room of a resturant and we're leaning towards a dry wedding. We wanted a strong photography budget, but we were okay with buying used wedding dresses or even just evening dresses. Once we had those basic permaters (we want a lunch for 40 guests at a resturant, drinks but no alchohal, a great photographer, a small wedding dress budget etc) we estimated those costs. We added them all up and put in a 10% contingency fee. Then we compared the budget of the wedding We wanted to what we thought we could realistically spend. For us it worked out, but if your dream wedding costs more than you want to spend, you can go back and see what you can reduce (swapping fancy chair rentals for chair cover rentals? Etc).

We are super blessed that my parents offered us some money to help us pay for the wedding but we are also having to use our own money while trying not to go into debt. Waiting for the next paycheck to purchase the next thing on the list that we need is super stressful. 2. My fiancée deciding at inopportune times he wants to be involved in planning and suddenly has a strong opinion on something he previously didn’t care about. 3. Having trust issues/wanting to do everything myself so it gets done the right way Honorable mentions include trying to get all of my bridesmaids together for things, future in laws adding to the guest list every week, and deciding what traditions to follow and which ones to ditch.

I would let him know that those decisions have been made but you're more than happy to get his insight on something else. it will help him feel involved. As far as adding to the guest list. I would say you budgeted for X number of guests so if family is adding to the list you might wnat to see if they are going to pay the difference if it causes you to go over budget.

Hi Jamie :) My SO and I are planning a smaller wedding of about 60-75 people. I'm worried that I'm going to over complicate things and freak out about a lot of things that won't end up mattering. Especially since we're not doing that much of a traditional wedding and basically have a huge party. My questions for you: 1. Do you have any advice that differs for smaller weddings? I know sometimes you preface that things take longer with larger crowds, but are there any unique challenges with under 100 people? 2. Do you have any recommendations for wedding games? What can people do at a reception other than dancing? Thanks for making this channel, it's awesome!

I'm just gonna pipe in since I've also got a smaller wedding guest list that the venue is quite important. Many wedding venues are so big that a small party will feel out of place. I went to a small wedding in a big venue a few years back and I ended up missing the first dance together with about a fourth of the guests as well stayed out chatting while some where having a smoke cause the toast master couldn't find all the guests who'd wandered off. Also the dining hall was so big that it felt a bit awkward and it was difficult to get a cosy chatty atmosphere going. Just something to keep in mind!

Katja Oksanen same challenge. Too many people for a restaurant or a lot of these “unique” places, too small for a room that seats 100+. Thinking of partitioning a space. Also the seat minimum for a lot of places... I feel that’s a mean joke. Any judgement for the small guest list from those invited?
@katjaoksanen944
@katjaoksanen944 6 жыл бұрын
@@teenagers012 Partitioning could definitely work to create a cosier atmosphere, but for me the issue is also the rest of the venue. If there's a lot of space outside of the main dining room people will just wander off like they're all lemmings. We've got a lot of gorgeous old buildings nearby where I've been to loads of fancy dinners through uni, and if you don't tell people they've got a fifteen minute bathroom break they won't be back cause they've run in to someone and started chatting. I don't mind people having a smoke and staying out chatting to some cousin, but it'd be good if they were sort of close by so that they can come back in when they hear something's going on. I haven't had any issues with people questioning our guest list but my family's Finnish and my SO's is Swedish so that might be a culture thing. People don't really butt in but rather lets us do our thing. Have you had push back on the guest list?
@teenagers012
@teenagers012 6 жыл бұрын
Katja Oksanen that’s a good point I didn’t think of. I’d hate for important moments to be in an empty room because the grounds are still large... And more from friends than family. Don’t you want it to be special? How’re you inviting so few? Oh I’m sure it’ll be more when you make the list! Made the list and invites are going to a max 80, but I’m expecting 50 or 60

You asked for comments here and now there's SO many! As always - Love you Jamie! My wedding stressors have been: 1. Fiance not being invested - like you said. I have had to make every single decision and he got upset and asked for extension after extension on the deadlines I gave him for just picking groomsmen! I actually ended up picking them for him and he just agreed to go with it. C'mon!! 2. My type A, control freak personality planning something that relies heavily on participation from others. I'm struggling so hard internally to not nag my bridesmaids about getting their dresses. 3. Making decisions on vendors that do more custom work. Especially when I'm choosing everyone over the phone or website (destination wedding)! This one was really tough for me. I had no issue choosing a venue, pastry chef, catering menu... but the florist and photographer took me forever to decide!! I could only look at pictures of other visions that didn't totally match mine and choose from that. It's hard for me to just trust that they will capture my vision like I have in my head. Customizing flowers in the bouquets and centerpieces without seeing it all put together was also hard. Luckily the coordinator wasn't as hard of a decision since I just clicked with her type A "on top of it" personality over the phone. That's one vendor that I splurged on rather than going with the most affordable option. :)

What has stressed me the most is after I have my heart set on a vendor and I bring it to my parents all excited. The biggest stress is dealing with people (typically close family I can’t tell off) who keep telling my fiancé and I how we should be planning our wedding. For instance, before we had to postpone, they loved reminding us how far behind we were. My fiancé and I were acutely aware of how behind we were and this only stressed us out more instead of being helpful or motivating. Once we had to postpone, they have backed off, but I fear the intrusion again. And it’s from people I welcome help from! Thanks again for sharing all if you tips. They’ve been hugely helpful.

It being an inconvenience is not your worry. Having it closer to them may very well be a longer period of inconvenience to you: you may either have to find vendors in the venues area or pay massive travel fees, you'll have to make trips to visit the venue etc several times while they'd only being making the trip once. Do what you feel best, but try not to make this already stressful time anymore stressful on yourself. Hoping the best for you, darling!

Pick the venue that you and fiance want and if people can make it, they will. If most are not able to, you could consider having another reception with just hors'devoures at a place closer. With a 5 hour drive i'm sure most will be staying at the hotel so keep that in mind. Besides depending on where, some folks might take it as a mini vacation.

One of the things that's made a HUGE difference in the beginnings of wedding planning for me is: *What 3 words describe your style or what you're looking for in your wedding?* I was looking at stuff and considering buying some flowers and looking at venues. And everytime I cringed at an element or I wasn't over the moon over something in a venue I took note of that. Also, the styles or things I was drawn to. My 3 words that sum up what I want from my wedding are: Contemporary, bright, vintage elements So that REALLY narrowed down what I am actually looking for. Not just a venue and not just decorations. They are the things I'm drawn to the most.

So we head out and my boyfriend starts ignoring the gps and going the wrong way. He wouldn’t listen to me so i ended up pouting the rest of the car ride, then he made me get out of the car..... it was cold and had rained recently and i had no coat and was wearing white shoes, so we get out and i start complaining more and we walk towards the river and I’m thinking that he is going to push m in and leave be because he is over me and as i turned he got down on one knee an asked me to marry him! He told me that he did it there because he knew I wanted it near water and that was the closest he could get with out making me more mad lol. Our wedding is a little less than a year away. We have a lot planned, right now my biggest stresses are 1) the parts of my catholic wedding that the priest is super strict about (music and time) 2) how to find a dj for low cost and 3) if a videographer is worth it.

I have been married for just over 4 years and it STILL stresses me out thinking about my wedding. I never considered myself to be a control freak but when it came to my flowers, ESPECIALLY my bouquets I knew exactly what I wanted. After I physically showed my florist how I wanted the charms that I customized to hang from each bouquet, I pretty much had to hand it off to her and her creativity and professionalism. She blew me away with ALL of my florals. EVERYTHING was GORGEOUS beyond my wildest dreams. But I trusted her and I didn't assume that she knew how to make the charms hang, as soon as I showed her, she knew exactly what I meant (because she was awesomesauce and told me that she had no CLUE what I was talking about until I showed her) LOL. And that was just one of the things, Jamie, I love ya Girlfriend, my husband and I were literally and physically standing in the foyer waiting to be announced by the DJ when the Caterer shows up and starts pushing US out of the way so that they could bring the food in. What the FREAK???!! Our guests had been waiting over an hour for appetizers and drinks, not to mention, our cake(s) were not on display. I had this lawn garden item painted specifically to display our Wedding cakes and yep, nope, nuthin…. I unfortunately had friends from out of town leave before we even got there because they were starving and had to get home before it was too late. So, yes folks, TIMING IS EVERYTHING!! Whew, okay, I can calm down now. LOL And every couple will have a funny little story when it comes to their wedding day, but hopefully it will get even funnier as more time passes. And I know when she is ready to come into her grand entrance when the photographer gets into place. If it’s time and I don’t see the photographer or the videographer, I go find them and check in because 99% of the time they are with the bride and groom. As the DJ, I know where all vendors are at all times to make sure I work in harmony with them and adjust for them. A coordinator makes it so much easier. But if there isn’t one, your DJ should be the one checking in and balancing with you guys and your vendors so everyone is taken care of and your guests stay entertained

Are there certain components of your Cajun culture that will be incorporated in the wedding that you feel non Cajun guests will need an explanation? Or are you saying it's more of a discomfort/ embarrassment thing? I am half Ghanaian so we will be having a traditional Ghanaian ceremony the day before the American ceremony, to honor the culture. We are going to provide a program booklet highlighting the traditional elements.

@@Purplelily24 I think it's more of the discomfort factor. Part of my fear is that we are having a catholic mass. We are both practicing catholics and our immediate family members are but everyone else is not. Catholic mass can be intimidating to people who are not used to it. As far as Cajun culture elements, it's more in the reception. We are having a second line and while we have explained it to most, I don't think people outside of our culture will get it. We will also have some Cajun two step and such but that can be taught. My future mother in law is worried people won't understand that there is no seating plan too. We just don't do seating plans. We don't do sit down dinners at weddings. Open buffet, open bar, wide open dance floor. I have made sure though, the food is half traditional Cajun/Creole and half southern comfort

@Purplelily24 6 жыл бұрын
@@ThatsSo369 I understand. I think it's important to remember that these are people you love and who are there to support you and your spouse (if not, maybe not invite them?) for the Catholic mass, I understand. no one is compelled to participate in any religious activity. again, they are there to support you and share in your joy. Hopefully your guests will be respectful during the mass, and if they are super uncomfortable and feel so strongly about it, they can attend the reception only. this is a time of celebration, they're not visiting a cultural museum. hopefully your guests will not be stuck up and judgemental, nor will they be delicate fragile flowers who would crumble when encountering something that is not their native culture. they're all adults and can deal with being in a situation that they are not super familiar with (especially since you've already gone above and beyond by explaining it to them- they could do research for themselves honestly). hopefully they're mature enough to suck it up for a few hours and get over it! Again, it's for the greater good of celebrating with you and hubby. your culture is just as valid and valuable as theirs is, so don't be embarrassed, ashamed or uncomfortable about it! you don't have to apologize for being Cajun, so go on with your bad self! if they don't like it, maybe they won't come, and you'll know going forward where you really stand with them. less stress and static in your life. most likely though, they'll probably end up having a blast and will be talking about how much fun they had at their new cousin/aunt, etc Cajun wedding! hope everything goes well!

As far as comparing your wedding to your sister in law or cousin, try to remember that everyone who loves you will care about thst the most. When I go to an aquantances wedding, sure I might really care about how great the food is or if there's a bar. But if my best friend was getting married and all she could afford was a reception for 10 guests at McDonald's, I would still not miss that for the world..because it's one of the most important days in someone's life that I love to pieces. So try to have a wedding you will love. I can almost promise you the people who love you most will be happy with anything because they love you. And why worry too much about an aquantance's oppinion? I've gone to very religious weddings and it's not a problem even if I don't share the faith system, especially if I'm close to them and it's a reflection of their values Having information on what to do (when to stand, sit etc) and the symbolism would be super helpful as a guest.

Your videos have been SUCH a lifesaver for me! In fact, we finally decided to hire a coordinator and she’s great :-) my biggest stressors have been... 1. Figuring out the details. Songs for every little moment, who’s bussing tables, coordinating a Polaroid guestbook, etc. My god, there is more than meets the eye 2. Making sure our vendors are all on the same page with each other AND my vision. So many pieces have to work together in unison😭

congrats!!! I would say getting complementary dresses is something to consider. My bestie got a lace gown and her SO got a lace gown but because they were both different lace types and one was white and one was only a slightly different shade of white it looked kind of odd together of that makes sense. Both gorgeous brides obviously but they did regret it for photos etc

Aisle less traveled is a great website and resource for those planning LGBTQ weddings in the states, I think it's difficult to give advice of you haven't worked with non-straight or non-cis couples. I've been to a gay wedding and there wasn't really any difference but we live in Scandinavia where discrimination based on sexuality or gender identity is illegal so they didn't have to deal with anti-gay bakers or shit like that. The biggest difference was the walking down the aisle which they did by coming from different directions and meeting up at the start of the aisle (outdoor venue). They also skipped most of the wedding traditions but that's been common in the straight/bi weddings I've been to too. The biggest difference is for my other good friend and his fiance since their families don't approve (second gen immigrants) so they've got lots of shit to deal with. They've been planning to get married for years but they're just stuck. I think it's difficult to give advice to those couples if you don't know that struggle. Not to say that straight couples can't encounter that same issue of families disapproving.

I’m getting married May next year and I was starting to get so stressed because of my budget. Watching your videos helped me calm down a lot. I have found a venue, photographer and videographer all under 2k because they are up and coming young artists. My suggestion to everyone is check out the odd places that aren’t listed on the knot or wedding wire. Go search your town.

I have been engaged a week and my mother in-law has been crazy. I am pretty organized, I have picked my venue for the ceremony and reception and have found my dress. Since my mother in-law is retired, all day, everyday I get txted of all the things I have to decided right now!

That's tough! Try to take all her suggestions and just reply with "thank you" or "that's a cool idea, I'll take to (fiance) about it". That way you're still on her good side, but also dont have to give definite answers!

I came across this channel shortly after getting engaged, and your videos have been so helpful! I actually got all vendors booked a month after my engagement! The hardest part has been keeping within my budget, since my fiancé & I are paying for the wedding ourselves. He is the one that’s better with money, so I come up with the ideas & he is the more realistic one that figures out how we can successfully make those ideas happen in our budget. ☺️

Been following your channel for a while now, can’t believe I missed this video! Top 3 wedding stressors: 1. Time - I’m a college student and I’m graduating right before I get married next year, so I’m hoping to get most of the planning done this summer and not during the school year, which is so stressful 2. Budget 3. Guest list and size

My husband and I got engaged during his week home after completing marine corps bootcamp. We picked out my ring together and he proposed in the waiting area of the cheesecake factory. Most glamorous proposal in the world? No. But it was the best moment of my life other than saying I do. We eloped and now are planning a vow renewal ceremony for this November to celebrate our wedding with our families for the first time! My biggest stressor has been pleasing everyone. We both have large families and finding a day and time and picking the right style of dress and type of food and etc, etc, etc. Has been the most difficult part for me. I'm planning it by myself because I love party planning so nothing else has been too stressful, but I've definitely learned that it's just impossible to please each individual person.

# 1 stressor is figuring out the details and timeline of all the things involved in changing from a miss to a mrs. Bank account, insurance, family planning, moving in, all the address changing, marriage certificate, driver's license....

Biggest wedding stressors have been searching for items that I am trying to DIY/cheaper jewelry options and deciding what we do and don't need in the ceremony, reception, and just the whole day in general (readings, songs for the ceremony and special dances, who will play music at the ceremony, party bus, getting ready robes, etc....)

Picking a dress was really stressful for me-I probably tried on about 25 or so before I saw my dress online and fell in love with it. I actually ended up picking my bridesmaids dresses first because that was less stressful to me. Now, I’d say that the most stressful thing has been making sure my fiancé and I are commicating effectively. It turns out that he wants to be a lot more involved in the process than I initially thought, and was feeling left out of the process and was sad that he didn’t feel as connected the celebration as he wanted to. We’ve had to talk a lot about it and it’s gotten better now that we both have gotten our feelings out there and are starting to work together more cohesively, but it also means that the wedding can still feel like a touchy subject at times, which is totally not how I want it to feel!

My husband (we eloped first) told me that it’s MY wedding lol and to do whatever I wanted. I’m hoping that being married first takes some of the stress off of it because I have the great marriage. We will be writing our own vows because we did the traditional ones when we eloped & I really wanted to have a day to share with my closest family and friends. Had I done the wedding before the marriage I may have invited many more people and spent a lot more money. Having a baby and getting married tend to reveal the people who are the most genuine in your life.

Getting married October 19th I have DIY’d my whole event so far. Stressors: 1. My mom. She keeps trying to get me to do things that will blow the budget. She also has made every step of this process about her. She wanted to discuss what she would be wearing before I even had my dress. 2. Day of timeline. This is my next big project to run through everything and see if we can make it work or if I will be hiring a day of coordinator. 3. Tear down on the day. We are getting married at a state park and I have to give the keys to the park ranger at 10! I’m so worried that it’s not going to work out and then I don’t know what happens because no where in our venue contract does it say what the consequences are. Sorry for the long post lol but you did ask.

Im a list maker when it comes to my DIY projects. But Im also doing my flowers on my own. 😬 which right now is my number one stressor. Im buying bulk fresh cut flowers online and doing the rehydrating and arranging on my own to save money. I even have one of my bridesmaids flying out a week before the wedding to help keep my flowers alive once they get to my house!
