That's the "head". It's usually how Jazz is done. Put the theme out there and then develop it with the performers adding their personal flourishes (aka improvising). Once completed, they tend to wrap back around to the head to complete sometimes adding on a tag or coda of their own devising.

I've just found Tomo for the 1st time. I've listened to many video now and it clear to see John Mayer took away many of Tomo guitar mannerisms, Johns sounds very much like Tomo as do most all Tomo students, I like the play style, very smooth very easy listening . @@arthur38379 I am afraid it is much harder than learning one more scale or shape. From my understanding, those jazzy notes vary depending on the chord playing in the background, that is why they sound different than the rest of the scale but still sound good with the chord. You should learn the scales of each chord in the backing track and then mix everything together. And btw, he also plays chromatic notes which are out of the "scale" but sound good as long as he plays something in key afterwards. My recommendation is that you don't go for jazzy notes and "cooler" licks until you have mastered simple improvisation and learn more about music theory. Blues improvs also sound good and are pretty easy!
