I’m not gonna put the blame on the England players. They played how they were told to play. They were absolutely hamstrung by Southgate. Kane looked like he was invited to have a walk in the park and got lost and turned up accidentally at a major football tournament and Foden looked like he was told the only important goal to look at was his own. Southgate bears all the responsibility for this debacle.

Because they didn't have the squad depth. You can name all the greatest players and it tells a tale of "why couldn't they win" but when you name the weakest players it tells its own tale.. Robinson, James, Green, Sinclair, Upson, Downing, Mills, Barmby, Lennon, Walcott etc. Goalkeepers and left wingers were always an issue back then for England. The question always was would they even play a left winger or just put a top player like Lampard, Scholes, Gerrard etc out of position. They seemed to try every player in that position at one stage or another and none of them ever succeeded. And in goal was always another disaster waiting to happen. At Euro 2004 David James literally got scared and dived out of the way of a shot lol. Going into a tournament with James, Robinson or Green as 1st choice keeper was an area where Spain, Brazil, Italy etc always had a huge advantage over England. Their 4th choice keepers were better than Englands number 1.

Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta, Maldini, Panucci, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Albertini, Coco, Totti, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Vieri... There were lots of nations back then that will feel just as bad as England that they didnt win more.

I’ll be honest. I’ve been putting off watching this. I wasn’t even disappointed that we lost. We chanced our way through the entire competition and I was slightly going we’d chance our way to winning. It wouldn’t have been a deserved victory though. But sometimes I’ll take that. Southgate was quite literally shown what a team with world class quality players should play like. That was my take away and that should be the next England manager’s take away. The only good thing is we’ll now replace Southgate with someone who actually knows how to use his players, play aggressively with fluency and style, and hopefully not tediously fluke his way to finals…I say that, but the board will almost certainly go for a like-for-like MOR manager and we’ll just go on suffering despite having some of the most creative attacking players on the world. Southgate will take his knighthood. We’ll end up with someone equally as conservative. And on and on it goes…
