I think a lot of kids of today would just take the award and not have so many conscience issues. It's good for Jan that she did and we know what happens later. Accepting the award would have eaten her up inside.

Notice Carol's questionable flower arranging skills. Apparently the Schwartz's struggled to make Carol more dynamic and always tried to give her "busy-work", even if it had nothing to do with what was going on with the plot. I mean, in a way it worked. Can you imagine how dull this scene would be if both parents were sitting reading newspapers?
