It has been suggested that the man in the red hat reflected in the armor is in fact van Eyck and the lap of Mary can be considered an altar particularly since the Christ Child sits on what appears to be an altar cloth. We are then in effect witnessing the original transubstantiation.

I see you in that red blouse, Dr. Harris! 😌 The textures in this are incredible - I want to touch that blue cope very much. What a gorgeous material, even painted. The detail on van der Paele's face also impressed me. I'd expect more of an idealized representation of someone in a piece like this, but van Eyck pulled no punches, which I respect. "Baldachin" was a great new vocab term to pick up too. Much to learn, as always. ❤

Why isn't the picture still in the church, since van der Paele was a canon there?

The collegiate church of Saint Donatius (cathedral since 1559) was demolished in 1799, in the wake of the French Revolution.
