Jane Child, released in 1989, was fully written, produced, and performed on the synthesizer (except for the guitar parts) by Child herself, a rarity for a debut artist signed to a major label. Due to her musical style and her emphasis on control over her music, she was at the time labeled by the press as "the female Prince". Best known for the hit single "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The song was also a big hit on the R&B chart, peaking at No. 6, a rarity for a white artist.

I view this 89 song (in my own personal opinion) as the last "hurrah" of the iconic 80s synth sound. Many people dismiss this song as just a wacky pop one hit wonder song but The synth work on this song and other songs like Pebbles, "Mercedes Boy", are done so well that I never get tired of listening to any of them. In fact, Jane Child's 1st album where this song is a part of has amazing synth playing and sounds that were iconic 80s sounds. She was a very talented and underated artist. 👍

Three glorious weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1990, two of those weeks under another alternative singer, Sinéad O'Connor. Even if the style of "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" seemed to be in line with the moment, Jane Child herself was unknown. The entire eponymous album this comes from has bangers on it ("I Got News for You" is especially good), all so fervently controlled by Child herself. She understood funk, rock, melody, and rhythm. Such a great moment not just for Jane Child, but for those of us enjoying this on the radio. Ain't no personal thing, boy.

First time ever seeing this video... Mind blowing. She was a visionary, and all i ever knew was that this was a super catchy song from long ago. Heard it playing at a store, and when i looked it up, this was not what i was expecting to see. Whipping her braids better than late 90s Offspring, she could be a high level boss in a video game or a bouncer at a goth club. And if she was, I'd be hanging around.
