This is the most thrilling and tense love declaration. Both actors are amazing. Zelah is so wonderful here. She had been restraining her feeling all the time, and at last they splashed out! She is so nice! Timothy is a great actor. Even every muscle of his face tell us how much he loves Jane and wants her to be entirely his own. And we see it and believe him. Other versions are just nothing in comparison with Zelah and Timothy performing the scene of love declaration. I have seen it at least hundred times and will do it again. I admire those actors!

I must say Zelah is the best Jane Eyre I have ever watched. Her simple face but powerful character, calmness, quiet confidence, and intelligence all in one truly is the Jane Eyre in the book. One of the most underrated actresses. It's very sad that she mentioned before Jane Eyre literary ended her acting career. I think because Timothy went on to become a star yet she was blind sided. She deserved to be a star as much as Dalton. I can watch her all day and find no fault.

I think she meant to say that Jane Eyre was essentially the end of her career because she got so very few noteworthy parts after it while Timothy D went on to play James Bond and great parts.
@08mirandajane2 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more. She is basically perfect in this role. I can't understand why her career didn't take off more? I know it's a fickle industry but she just seems great. Subtle and powerful at the same time, in this role at least. Did she maybe give up acting for other reasons??
@maineclayton24192 ай бұрын
@@08mirandajaneSame sentiments. Zelah did a brilliant job but it was unfair her role as a lead didn't give her oppurtunities to continue her acting career. Maybe because most of the audiences in the show like "Jane Eyre" are women and they paid more attention to male leads like Dalton for their handsome appearance and versatile acting while the female actresses like Zelah are often sideline or worse losing their acting career. It was said in some articles and old interviews, Zelah continued to receive offers in acting both on TV and theater but as a supporting lead. She also worked as a voice actress in BBC Radio. She eventually gave up her career as an actress after she got married and chose to focus on raising her own family. From what I also researched online, Zelah later became an English teacher in an international school for young adults somewhere in London.

It scared the life out of him knowing she was inches away from Jane in her bed, he knows full well what his wife is capable of. In the book it reads later on, "but on what might have happened, I cannot endure to reflect. When I think of the thing that flew at my throat this morning, hanging its black and scarlet visage over the nest of my dove, my blood curdles-".......

Your post made me think - thanks ! The word ‘ ugly’ was originally an Old Norse word meaning ‘ to be dreaded’. Darkness, was also of course still dreaded and associated with evil, when the novel was written - and there’s Rochester, in this series, with abundant black hair and maybe a tanned complexion…the typical Byronic hero- moody, dark and not easily controlled. He didn’t look like a pale aristocrat with narrow shoulders and carefully controlled hair. He looked, perhaps threatening and his manner wasn’t the norm or predictable either. There are lots more influences that might explain that the not ideal or not handsome man back then wasn’t what we, might call ugly at all. I think that it refers to a ‘ wild man’ look - someone who looks closer to nature than an aristocrat might. Plus of course his nature, behaviour..and his connections to Nature…a force of Nature. Rochester’s proposal to Jane, at night in the garden, again makes him close to nature, plus it’s in darkness and maybe dangerous. I noticed that in that scene, Timothy Dalton understands the book very well indeed because with his eyes glinting in the moonlight, he has the expressions of not just a nervous man wanting his marriage proposal accepted. He looks a bit wild - like something that’s just appeared out of the trees etc and is poised maybe to run, or pounce..wondering if he’ll be saved or destroyed, by Jane. Her lack of fear of him, is one of the things that attracts Rochester, of course. Plus of course, he is, dangerous because he’s lying to her. Jane seems like his prey. She’s brave but she’s prey. He has a wife already. He’s not tamed by Jane. Only the fire, really does that. The word ‘ handsome’ was first used in about 1450 ( handsom) meaning, ‘ easy to handle or use’. The meaning changed of course but in terms of describing Timothy Dalton as Rochester, Jane would have been exactly right in describing him as not handsome, if we look at other connotations the word might have had. Easy to handle ? No. To the contrary…like Nature. I think that Timothy Dalton was the perfect Rochester, not only because of his acting ability but because he clearly knew exactly how to play the role without relying on his good looks. For almost the entire series, he was able to distract me, from that. He did the same in the Bond films and was the only one to really convince me ( and all my female and male friends too by the way) that the character really could flip from being quietly pleasant to a deadly killer in a split second, if necessary. Very, clever.
@yulikrisbudiyanti7732 Жыл бұрын
i agree with you, i dont think Rochester is ugly, he just not as pretty handsome just as how nobleman beauty described at that era. Rochester handsome in his own way and his charm is very different from other nobleman beauty. he also have high capability at art, music, acting which shown in front of his friends and also have capability to attracted other ladies. it also means that he do not ugly, just not handsome as that era criteria.

I love the replies in this thread. If you were to make a list from the book, you'd find that he actually fits it quite perfectly! I love they way they left in - and did not re-film - the bit where he accidentally messed up her hair and they both laughed! Makes that bit more enoyable to watch. You cannot help but smile.
@onaseriousnote41838 жыл бұрын
At 23:24 - they could have re-filmed it but they let her walk off with her hair in a mess and kept filming - and it was sweet too because it was clearly not meant to happen and he laughed and so did she; she would have been able to feel her hair was messed up! I am sure many a woman has had this happen. Rather like the famous scene from Pretty Woman in a way (except that was actually set up: the director asked Richard Gere to snap the jewellery case on Julia Roberts fingers for the outtakes at the end but her reaction was just too good to keep it out). After snapping the case on her fingers they kept rolling and then they left it in the movie. Of course, the down side in this story - at this point - is what we know he is concealing from her and how he makes her think it is all her! Not good. But I still love the overall story. And I know he was desperately in love with her but I am glad the deception was unable to go on in the end.
@onaseriousnote41838 жыл бұрын
Of course, it is just my opinion on the way it appears - and the fact they could have re-filmed it seems to support it. The thing about Pretty Woman I think I saw in an interview. Luckily I just happened to see your comment quickly!!! Have a great day! (or night!).

@onaseriousnote41838 жыл бұрын
I confess I think she does an admirable Jane Eyre. If you have read the book (and you probably have) then you'd know what Jane is like. Now, she may not fit our idea of a modern woman but I think Zelah Clarke plays Jane Eyre remarkably well: and remember, Jane tries to hide her feelings as women did back then but ZC does some really good subtle facial expressions for the camera that I personally find quite impressive! She was my absolute favourite Jane overall until Ruth Wilson - and now they are my equal favourite. But the storyline - and the lines - in this one (1983) is the most accurate of the two. The most accurate overall is probably the 1973 version but I just cannot see an 18 year old falling in love with him no matter how talented he may be! But the 1983 (Timothy Dalton) and 2006 (Toby Stephens) (oh, and not to forget, the 2011 [Michael Fassbender]) leading men are definitely of the ilk required lol. Personal preference: OMG, Timothy Dalton lol. ha ha. He plays, as I have read, a great Byronic hero! But, it is the Jane Eyre that we must always focus on - and she should always get top billing - I find it extremely annoying when she does not! This is a good read: www.silverpetticoatreview.com/2013/08/27/ten-reasons-to-watch-the-1983-adaptation-of-jane-eyre/

Symbolism: This is more evident in the book than here, but Jane is associated with the moon, Rochester with the sun, so several of their important outdoors meetings occur at sunset or sunrise, when the sun and the moon meet. E.g. The horse accident in Hay Lane, Mason's departure from Thornfield, Jane's return from Gateshead, and the proposal scene.

Timothy Dalton is too handsome but he grows in the role. Zelah is the best Jane Eyre, I think CBronte would approve. The best adaption so far. The chemistry grows also, TD is a bit "actorish" but he manages to let Rochester come out. Zelah is brilliant.

Yes, both embodied the characters very well. But I also liked Samantha Morton in the 1997 version and Toby Stephens in the 2006 version. Though like Dalton, Toby was too good-looking for the role

He plays the version of Mr Rochester in his best element, able to exude the state of being relaxed; childlikely happy to see her, playful and witty. His kindness shines in. He's finally getting in tune with life. I think he's very moved with Jane's notion that he's her only home there is. Isn't that the biggest compliment to one's lover? Sounds very modern to my ear. The subconscious makes its way. Jane is not even entirely aware of it. Now that you pointed at the scene, indeed, it paves the way for the things unfolding in the next forthnight up to the proposal. A very gentle, subtly subdued moment between the two.

Thank you @January’s Moon for adding this miniseries. I love how faithful it is to the novel. Timothy Dalton is a bit too handsome for Mr. Rochester, but he really acts the part. The actress really did a great job as Jayne too.

And he only gets her to confess her love by the threat of separation. Jealousy does not work. Neither did the fortune teller disguise. Note that she did give him some hope when she said that wherever he was was her only home upon her return from Gateshead.
@Iatraviata692 жыл бұрын
yes thats evident, but in her mind this separation would be caused by Blanche. And after the failed marriage she doesn t hesitate living her own life separated from him, also when she exspected firstly that her life would be finished on this point. She was prepared since a month that this hurtful separation would come. In the book on this Situation of "Irland" is written, that she can t controll and oppress anymore her feelings, that her heart forces her to confess her love and pretend his right. evident for me is also the wild ocean channel between the so different England and Ireland as symbole, the passion who would stand between them as "Separation" for people with two different origins like them. She the innocent, who doesnt know what she could dare, when she break with the conventions of her religions, and he, whos Experience doesn t know anymore, how to "controll" an innocent person, f. e. whether she would react on jealousy or on breaking convention or passion. Both become equally lost or inable to guide the other one, in this difference. She was also and when he pretend her in the finale "Leave me" she had no problems to go. In Moorehouse and Morton she found a "new home", but not for being happy but independent again.

@@slaoz3082 Yes. Fairfax has known Rochester longer than Jane has. Even if she didn't know about Birtha, she knew something was going on and chose to ignore it. I think she thought Jane didn't know what she was getting into. 'Course there's that marrying way above her station which could mean there's hint of jealousy in there too.

When I think of Jane Eyre adaptations, and I've seen them all, this is the one I want to see over and over. Zelah is the perfect Jane and of course no one can match TD as Rochester. The 2006 version is one I never want to see again. Stephens swashbuckling portrayal was way off and it was apparent he didn't understand or believe in his part. Wilson, as Jane, was as wrong as was Rochester. The scenery was great and production quality was excellent. Other than that, it was a romp Harvey Weinstein would have created. ....with the '84 version, kudos for the score by Paul Reade which is perfection!

Maybe TD was considered unattractive in Brontes time?? Idk maybe standards of beauty change overtime. I bet pretty boys were the standard of male beauty back then. In the book Rochester has dark eyes, striking features, broad chest. Doesn't seem that ugly to me 👀
@cormorant_on_arock79345 жыл бұрын
i'm sure this guy wouldn't be considered ugly in *any* era. I was actually just asking about this - why would CB go well out of her way to make Rochester so utterly ugly?? (And she does the same for Jane, or almost the same. She is utterly plain; and CB, during one of her and her sisters' firelight pacing of their room at night, discussing one another's novels, spoke with her sisters of how she could succeed, with the public, in making a non-beautiful heroine). It just dawned on me while watching, this time, with the "it would be past the power of magic [to make you handosme]" that it is odd that CB would go out of her way to make Rochester so physically ugly. It's one of his defining characteristics, I think, to go along with his sardonic temper. Heger, her professor, whom he was based off of, wasn't hideous-looking or anything. I don't think. So it's psychological, and very intersting. I suppose CB's ideal is for people to love one another based on everything *but* appearances? Like, that would make a level playing field for love.
@cultmamacultmama35715 жыл бұрын
@@cormorant_on_arock7934 Charlotte Bronte indeed went out of her way to create both Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester as not very good looking people - because she based them both on two real-life characters - namely herself and Constantin Heger - and they were both not good looking.
@franbell35944 жыл бұрын
@@cormorant_on_arock7934 the line in the book is that it would be past the power of magic.... but then CB goes on with Jane's thoughts to add that all it needs is a loving eye.

January's Moon thank you so much for posting this wonderful epic Jane Eyre here... On watching another version I happened upon the comments that urged viewers to seek out this 1983 version with Timothy Dalton..... Ewwwww! at first I thought, only knowing of T.D in the 007 franchise.... But had time on my hands and thought... HOW bad can it be??? I certainly have not been disappointed so far and I'm only up to Episode 7... All I can say is that T.D was perfect in this adaptation. Makes me want to investigate if he appeared in any more period dramas. Whether he is more moulded to play period roles, or as it might be.... JUST THIS ONE ... That is how this series makes me feel upon watching it... I've not even read Jane Eyre...But it is going on my "To Read" list after I'm finished on David Copperfield. It's amazing that all these wonderful novels, written over 200 years ago, written by women who were to the larger part considered 'subordinate', can still have such an impact on our modern lives in the modern day world. It blows me away, that regardless of time and civilised advancement, that we can still gleam such wisdom, knowledge and experience from them. Reading and knowledge is my private passion. I'm so glad to be watching this...I can't wait to read the book now

Johanna Cladingboel Timothy played Heathcliff in Wuthering heights in 1970. He was very young then and I still feel that this was and is the best Wuthering heights. It is however criticised for not following the original book story but this does not spoil my enjoyment of the film. Timothy is beautiful, as always, in this version.

I watch this movie over and over and can't stop. It's amazing. Rochester of Timothy Dalton as well as of Michael Fassbender in a version 2011 is something unreal ❤❤❤. The movie 2011 is not so detailed as 1983, but the acting of Fassbender, his eyes, especially in a parting scene is something what I can't get enough. Wheareas Dalton is so handsome like a creature from another world. Damn, why Rochester can't exist in reality?)) I'm from Russia. First I've watched the movie in Russian, now in English because I wanted to hear a real voice of Timothy.
