I learned about Jane when I was a music student at IU in the 70's. To say I was totally blown away by her is cliche but it is true. I bought all of her albums and couldn't get enough of her angelic voice. Such power, control and dynamics. Not of this world. When I heard her sing this song for the first time it reduced me to tears. It still does. She makes know what true love is all about. I continue to wait for Some Enchanted Evening to happen. Until then, its Jane and me...

I too remember her on Merv...in fact I remember her first appearance when he introduced her as an office worker in NYC (or words to that effect). I was awe struck and a fan from that day on. My late partner and l were together 30 years when he died in the fall of 2005. When we had just moved in together in 1979, we had a huge row because he had spent a large amount of money -- he was young and not earning a lot -- on a ticket to see Jane Olivor with a friend he knew before we met. l am a classical musician and a little patronising about pop music, so l could not understand his fondness for this singer, until he played her first LP for me. Since he died l listen to a lot of the music he loved, and this song, which is such a description of the night we met, fills me with joy for the love l had.

Why this woman was not a huge star I'll never know. But there is one common theme I'm reading here. So many of us, myself included can remember the first time we heard her sing as if it was yesterday. There is greatness in her voice/interpretation that you simply cannot/need not explain. I think the American Piaf is as good a monicker as any.
@charlesdavis70874 жыл бұрын
Wow... what a wonderful and insightful thing to say. (An American Piaf.) The first time I heard her was on a record (33) back in the late 70's. What I heard was even more intense and heartfelt than Judy Garland... on steroids. The impact was totally electrifying. We were pinned to our seats... and yet, dancing in a Gay bar in Virginia Beach. Stunned. We were fucking stunned. Then, just a few months later, I got to see/hear her live in Seattle... live in a performance. I'm now 75, Gay, rich and in good health. Wow. She set a new standard in excellence... that's with me to this day. The spirit "Of Some Enchanted Evening" is still with me to this very hour.

Hi Stephanie, I realize this response is a few years late, but the answer to your question is this; Jane Oliver (Cohen) is this, Jane tragically lost her husband when her husband when her career was just beginnig. Or perhaps you allready know this now. She withdrew from the public eye, but she never meant the withdrawal to be for such a lengthy time. I am a fan almost 49 years later.

I was going out one night (not too many years ago:) and the last thing I would do is turn off the tv. I reached for the remote and before I had a chance to zap if off Merv Griffin had just introduced a singer and she started singing Some Enchanted Evening. It was instant! Mine as well! It’s a song that has been covered by so many artists, but I never tire of listening to Jane’s version ... unlike listening to ANY version of Memory from Cats, which has been so over-covered. I enjoyed Memory about the first 5,000 times that I heard it (ok, that’s probably an exaggeration), but anytime it comes on now I cringe, and feel like my head may explode, Even the cover of Memory by Barbra Streisand, who is my all-time favorite artist.Not because she doesn’t do a good cover, it’s just because I can’t stand to hear the song anymore. Jane is such a talented artist and I have been so fortunate to see her perform live twice. I wish she would go on tour again (well, when the pandemic is over, which doesn’t look like it’s going to be any time soon unfortunately).

I have read that Barbra never wanted to record this song, probably because it was covered enough and I think she just didn't care for it.
