In today’s video, we’re diving deep into the shocking onstage altercation between Jane’s Addiction members Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro during their Boston concert on September 13, 2024. The mid-performance punch sent shockwaves through the crowd, abruptly ending the show and leaving fans wondering about the future of the band. What led to this explosive moment? Let’s take a closer look at the build-up, from Farrell’s frustration with stage sound issues to his struggles with tinnitus and vocal problems.
I’m a huge Jane’s Addiction fan and had the privilege of interviewing Perry's wife, Etty Lau Farrell, on the Inspired Money podcast. Perry even made a surprise appearance.
Etty Lau Farrell: Beyond Jane's Addiction - A Solo Journey Unveiled
• Etty Lau Farrell: Beyo...
Photographer Brian MacKenzie, who was at the Boston show, initially thought the altercation was part of the act. Fans, too, were left guessing - was this real, or just an overblown stunt? After two minutes, it was clear: the show was over, with no encore. The tension in the band had been brewing, and according to Etty Lau Farrell’s Instagram post, Perry was battling more than just high stage volume. He’d been dealing with tinnitus and a sore throat, adding to his mounting frustration.
But there’s more. Just days after the incident, Jane’s Addiction released an official statement:
“Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour. Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would ensure a safe environment on stage or allow us to deliver a great performance consistently. Our hearts are broken.” - Dave, Eric, and Stephen
Throughout this video, we’ll also cover fan reactions, explore footage from previous shows, and break down what really happened during the altercation. Is this the end for Jane’s Addiction? Watch to find out!
Let me know your thoughts in the comments - can the band move forward after this, or was this fight inevitable? Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe.

He was using custom molded In Ear Monitors, which block virtually all stage volume out. So that is an out and out lie. At his age, you cannot drink alcohol, even a little while pushing your voice, it dries out the vocal cords. At 65, you can't go and tour and act like you did in your 20's and expect to bounce back from that abuse. He was drunk and frustrated that his voice was shot, no one's fault but his own. The irony is, Dave and the band were trying to help him and he mistook the gesture and verbally attacked them then attacked Dave.

Perry has since apologized but it's too little too late. What a sad way to go out. I saw a lot of comments here saying that Perry should have talked to the sound engineer backstage, etc, etc. Yes, maybe so, however, people should take a second to ask themselves WHY he may have been low in the mix. Many fans have commented that during live shows this time around, Perry's performances have been bad. Sloppy, missed time cues, out of tune, forgetting lyrics, strained voice, slurring his words (possibly due to alcohol) etc. The working theory is that the band mates and the people in charge of running the shows turned Perry down a bit in the mix to help mask his bad performances while everyone else had to perform at their absolute a-game. I certainly can't rule out Perry's wife or any of his friends getting in his ear about the whole thing, making him angrier, and if so, that's a crappy thing to do. But Perry is an adult who should be old enough to know better than to handle things this way. It's nice that he said he takes full responsibility and all, but clearly the rest of the band has had enough now that all of the remaining dates are cancelled. Again, sad way to go out.

I do think this is 99% Perry's fault (inverse pun not intended). But... I can't process this. Guess I am blessed to not yet have to deal with such an unstable person. I recall around the time of Song Yet to Be Sung, he spoke of friends advising "find a way to heal", which I think prompted him to embrace his religious roots. Agnostic, myself. But dayum, Perry. But Perry, obviously flipped out a 'bit'. If the volume was a problem, that should have been handled days/weeks ago. All the previous clips/shows sounded similar. Somebody clearly made the decision to turn Perry's mic down. Imagine metaphorically what that could be interpreted to mean in our complicated world. How many people wanted to see the show continue, knowing that Perry was in an altered state? 100% of those in attendance that evening. And how many would have liked to see the tour continue, perhaps with the expectation that Perry would be an ongoing, unpredictable experiment? 100%, again. This is exactly what fans are looking for. I do believe his microphone was turned down. His wife even said that on social media. However, we do not know who made the decision to turn it down. Was it one sound guy independently deciding that Perry needed to be turned down? Or was it more of a collective band decision? That is what I currently do not know about. It's possible that Perry accused Dave of being one of the conspirators who turned the microphone down, although it is possible Dave was not involved with the microphone being turned down. If the band was strong enough what they would do is decide to continue, knowing that his voice will be all over the place. Fans need to hear him try. Secondly, you make the addition of a volume adjuster so that Perry can be in charge of how loud he is on stage. Isn't that funny that the lead singer of this band wasn't able to adjust his microphone volume himself? You'd think that he would be able to because he is the lead singer and that seems like an obvious thing he'd be able to do. He can't though. And this entire disagreement stemmed from that! Get that man his own microphone! Continue Perry! Somebody, at least, deep-fake 12 more videos of the remaining tour shows with Perry singing real bad so we can all be happy.
@InspiredMoney

@@ChristmasPhone-e5s Only the inner circle knows. In the venues that they perform in, it’s really impossible for the lead singer to control his volume. I'm hopeful that Jane's will come back again after a much needed break for perry, if he gets sober and treatment. They were much more volatile in the 90s when they were all junked out. Perry apologized to his bandmates on IG, and hopefully he did so in real life esp to dave. Perry has drank bottles of wine at each show for the past 30 years and has mostly been fine, so it's surprising that it escalated so quickly all of a sudden, but father time always wins. He can't pretend he's a 30 year old rockstar anymore. It's still confusing why he got so mad at dave. In one of the videos for mountain song at nyc, perry sings over one of dave's solos, so i think that's why dave was being more proactive during that song to let perry know since that song is repetitive. During the boston show when they were playing mountain song, dave went up to eric and said something, probably about perry getting lost in that song, and perry seemed annoyed that they were talking about him and started singing aggressively at dave. Dave and eric looked annoyed/concerned/nervous about perry. Also, for everyone saying eric took cheap shots at perry, that's just etty's version of the story. She wasn't there on stage. It seems to me like eric was trying to grab the mic outta perry's hand so he doesn't hit anyone with it.

When Jerry Garcia was dying on stage in 1995, he would turn himself down and mix himself out. So, it’s not unheard of for a poor performance to be mixed down. But Perry has IEM’s so the stage volume thing is bullshit. I play in a band - a band the size of Jane’s Addiction will have zero problems with monitor mixing and FOH. Those people are professionals. Maybe Perry got confused and couldn’t figure out how to adjust his monitor mix, which is what it looks like he’s doing.
@InspiredMoney
@InspiredMoney 15 сағат бұрын
When on stage, the artist can’t really know what it sounds like FOH. You can only know what here hearing through IEM or stage monitors. Whatever it was, PF’s frustration was off the charts.

@@InspiredMoney ehh, that's not completely true. Just pull your IEM's out and you can get a sense. Granted, we've never played a stadium but I imagine it's sort of the same, we've played big rooms. But like I said, sometimes I pull my IEM's out slightly to get more of the room sound. It's very room-dependent tho, which is crazy. It's so wild how different venues can sound differently. But also, if he was singing so shittily, it was perhaps the FOH's intelligent decision to keep him lower so that the overall performance of the band sounded better.
@BradYaeger
@BradYaeger 3 күн бұрын
Like others have said , very little chance it was a stage volume issue . Eric and Dave would be using the same amp volume each night to get uniform sound . Perry has in ear monitors and could get any mix he wanted just by asking an engineer . If there were FOH issues nobody on stage would know . ANY seasoned musician knows you don't ask audience members their opinion of the FOH sound because you'll get 100 different answers depending on where they are in the venue . You want the best sound you go stand by the sound booth and hear what they are hearing . I do believe he was told that though by some front row fans and in his state of mind took it personal . He's always drank wine onstage . A standard bottle 750ml is equal to 4 strong beers . Not a lot when spread over an hour set . Any pro singer knows you have to care for your voice , especially at his age . So that part does make the wine a bit of an issue . You need rest after each show, no talking or heavy smoking etc. Certain narcotics will dry your cords out as well. Dave was staring because he wanted Perry to look at him so he could signal the solo , my guess is yes that is their usual move because the song is kind of a jam song. When players cross stage and yell in each others ears they are trying to problem solve on the fly . In this case on this tour Perry was the problem . I hope he gets right and tries again though . Sober or at least mostly sober musicians play far better than messed up ones . It's just the messed up ones can't tell how bad they sound

Good understanding of live sound. Don't overlook the fact that these rumored unhappy fans down front would have been on the rail with Dave's amps firing straight at their heads. Of course they were hearing more guitar than vocals. I don't see any aux speakers along the front edge of the stage for those folks so it could have been the case that they were getting blasted with guitar while things sounded fine further back in the room.

Farrell has always been so full of himself. That’s a well known behavior of his, but up until that last tour and the Boston fiasco, he was always putting people in a good mood at shows and was a hell of a frontman in that respect. He never was a very skilled singer, going rather for the punk approach in that regard. But as inexcusable as his pathetic meltdown was, he is the singer and also by far the oldest of the band. So personally I would not fully discredit that element of his explanation. I was a singer myself and it can be very frustrating when the rest of the band continually drowns you out in decibels. I think Perry crossed a line DURING the show which may permanently damage and end the band. When your actions cause the end of the show AND tour, ruining the livelihood of the band, crew and promoters, not to mention the disappointment of all the fans, you may have permanently lost the TRUST critical for a band to continue. If you call sucker punching Perry in the gut like Eric did when he went over to Perry after the Dave scuffle "professional", then someone didn't see the punches fly due to the lighting and angles. Etty even confirmed the low blow punches Eric gave Perry in her Instagram post. I guess Eric had enough of Perry's antics. Ultimately, Perry should've addressed his issues between songs by huddling with Eric and Dave. If Perry was a bit drunk or high though, thinking rationally isn't always an option.
