I don't how to express just how radical this band was in 1988. Nothing's Shocking could easily be considered the birth of the 90's.

@@Claythargic I first heard Ocean Size on KISW. The DJ said something like "this band is the new Guns N Roses". The song sounded nothing like GNR, but by the time it was over I got it. Then, as the station was promoting a rising star concert headlines by JA, I first heard Soundgarden (Flower) and got my first clue that the big city 20 minutes from my home wasn't quite the nowhere years of sports futility and personal isolation had led me to believe. I'm sure it has a fair amount to do with why I never left the area.

I LOVE that Lex caught the vibe as we all did in 1988. I’m often frustrated that Brad often (not just this song) focuses so heavily on the lyrics. Sometimes you just gotta close your eyes and let the wave take you away and not ask questions as to why.

Remember the time period - this is late 80's when MTV was awash in hair bands - Jane's Addiction was building a grass roots following with their style of alternative rock. This was before the Seattle grunge scene exploded. It's only when i look back in time when i can appreciate how they were a "weather vane" for music and where it was soon headed. I loved the alt-rock scene of the early 90's and this band was ahead of its time.

Boat cleaning music! lol Lex is so funny and cool. This song was from the mid '80s! That's right, this song was mid 1980s! Proto-grunge music! Pre grunge, very raw, early years. Surf/skate punk kind of music. Punk rock music inspired, alternative rock. Noise rock! They were college radio and alternative radio station darlings. Like REM, RHCP, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Sioxsee and the Banshees, Gang of Four, Joy Division/New Order, Dinosaur JR, Suicidal Tendencies, The Cure, Husker Du, etc were back then, bands way ahead of their time. You almost never hear their songs on regular radio stations during the '80s, and were only on very late night MTV videos. . Groups like them back in the 80s, helped usher in punk/grunge, alternative rock, indie rock into the mainstream during the late '80s, early'90s (this was when hair bands were kind of becoming stale) . There was a huge explosion of bands like this during that time that broke through the mainstream. Janes Addiction was one of the big influences for things to come for alt rock during the '90s/'00s. Janes Addiction was a great '80s/'90s band from LA, California They eventually split off, another band ('90s) Porno for Pyros was formed, same singer, Perry Farrell. Watch more videos, songs from both groups. Very nice music, unique videos.

This song sounds like standing with each foot on opposite sides of a small rowboat in the ocean. This song, speaking literally, states that the narrator is coming down the mountain (like a prophet from the ecstatic moment of epiphany) and meets some smackheads. He shares the same opinion as them. He declares that holding back your authentic self ultimately ends in pain and destruction. He says to let your real self out, unleash and share your individuality and unique talents and characteristics with the world. Then he snidely, world-wearily says, "Cash in!" Sell your uniqueness, your creativity, your "soul" to the economic machine.

they did been caught stealing already, although i believe without the video, i agree then she did is amazing and one of their best, but i think it maybe a little advanced, i think they need a couple more janes songs under their belt first such as three days, ted just admit it, classic girl, would for you, pigs in zen, or 'ocean size' which would have fit Lex's boat analogy even better but i kinda get it this song has a bit of that same feel.

@@dominrael8658 You arent wrong! That's what makes this a fun discussion. I LOVE Mountain Song, but it's not one of the first I would pick for new users to make reaction videos out of. The vocals, melodies, and wicked guitar and bass tracks in this song were truly special. Even 35 years later, this album still stands as a crowning achievement in rock, and became a true harbinger of things to come in the 90s. Growing up in the LA in the 90s underground scene, we were so spoiled by Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt, just to name a few.
