@zenzmurfy She looked happier in the 90s because it was before she got fibromyalgia, before she was targeted with death threats by right-wingers and shunned by hosts like this guy Conan for openly opposing the '03 US attack on Iraq, and (if she wasn't joking) before she quit drinking. She's said in a few interviews that quitting drinking left her fidgety and nervous for some reason, but I think the other reasons probably contributed as well.

Communists are not always socialist and the same is true in the opposite direction. I think what they are trying to say is that they have an aversion to stateist forms of government, which I can agree with.

A good example of it is some of the communist revolutions in Africa. Socialism is marked by ownership and distribution of all things of value to the people by the government. There have been examples in Africa where the dictator was Communist, but forgot about the redistribution part of socialism. So were they really a communist? It seems they had the fascists elements of it going. Hitler was another good example, he had socialist views but he called himself a Nazi.

@clipsryan I think she realized that the more she catered to the ideology of Leftists, the more this sub-culture would admire her and buy tickets to her shows - sort of the way a frat boy becomes more of a jerk if he has an admiring and supportive audience behind him. In her present incarnation, she's about as much of a jerk as she can manage - and her fans, all of the same ideological bent, really lap it up. But no, I'm not a fan of jerks. Here's a thought: if you think something is cool and you spell cool with "k" in the beginning it's really not cool at all.
