If an old fart may expand on that, she's one of the most interesting voices in a couple of generations. Remember that a lot of the real artists aren't appreciated for a dammed long time into their career, and sometimes not until after their own passing. Ms Monae has a clear artistic voice and a unique delivery that is deeper than pop music. It may well take a generation more to fully grasp what she's doing with her artistry, time needed for thorough analysis. Let's not forget that she was mentored at least partially by Prince, who is no longer with us, and he himself is worthy of academic study, that's how deep and profound his legacy goes... and she is, to my estimation, the clear front runner to take his legacy and expand on it. Far and away his most apt pupil, she also has attributes he didn't possess, a vulnerability he struggled with she has run headlong into. Dirty Computer is an amazing album, at once timeless, and yet specific to its era. That's some Bob Dylan shit right there, and she's still young with a long career in front if her. She's also a damned fine young actress, which is further testament to her artistry. Beyonce and Mary J have done movies, but I would hesitate to call them art

Let that sink in: “We Gave You God, We Gave You Birth, We Gave You Life, We Gave You Earth”. I worship the ground powerful women tread on. I was brought into the world by a powerful woman, and was shown the greatest love by women. The essence of the verb “love”, not just the noun. Powerful women like the multi-talented, multifaceted-superstar Janelle Monáe, will help save this world little by little, lift us up, love and care profoundly, bring awareness from all angles, and keep on trucking on her journey. I’m HERE for new music by this Queen. #highlymelanated

"Emoticons, Decepticons, and Autobots who twist the plot" -- I love this lyric. She's telling us that the "good guys", the Establishment and Law Enforcement ("Autobots"), are consistently lying to you and keeping you complacent with distraction. When someone tells you not to listen to a side, ask yourself why they're trying to keep them quiet. Ask yourself, why are they trying to keep Black women silent? It's time to listen to what they have to say! Keep the lines of communication open, decide for yourself who is worth listening to. Afrofuturist artists like Janelle Monae are going to save the world, I swear.

Violin & viola as in the music instrument but the line before that she referenced getting away with murder no scandal (as in the TV shows) with Viola Davis being the lead on How to Get Away with Murder. Her word play is insane! :)

Why in the world do we black folk have to fight EVERY DAMN BATTLE BY OURSELVES , I have to fight 4 battles : 1. My color (my peanut butter complexion ) 2. My gender 3. My athleticism ( bcoz I’m a female society says it’s taboo for black women to be athletic ) Oh and I thought of a secret one 4. MY INTROVERTED INTELLECTUALISM ( just coz I’m quiet doesn’t mean I don’t HAVE A VOICE ) And those 4 are just the nice ones I CAN THINK OF
