A performance like this is what really set her apart from other female dancing artists, no matter how good others seemed to be. The “outside the box” style of this dance and the absolute precision of its execution is very impressive. She always kept it fresh.

When you realize everyone going crazy cause this was the first time Janet performed/danced live since The Velvet Rope Tour in1998, then she did The Nutty Professor II in 2000, which of course is how we were introduced to Doesn't Really Matter. The crowd yelling GO JANET GO JANET is so nostalgic af!

I was lucky enough to attend this VMA show! Janet’s manager gave the true fans free tickets to the VMA’s that year. All you had to do was ask! What an incredible night!

I wasnt a fan of Janet UNTIL this performace, I remember waiting for Britney and Christina but when Janet performed I was like WTF this woman is AMAZING, nobody could match her that night. Till this day shes my Number 1.

Janet is called " The Blueprint " because she influenced and inspired female artists Selena, Beyonce ,TLC, Jennifer Lopez, Aaliyah, Ciara, as well as newer artists like Normani,Tenasha, and others. Doesn’t really matter was probably some of the hardest choreography too learn.. its almost as detailed as rhythm nation.. and again Janet runs with it. Like a trained dancer.. she’s not.. just pure talent .Iconic performance.. Shawnette & Marty did an amazing job of creating this masterpiece ❤

I remember watching this that night and thinking how she should have went last, because no one's performance could touch hers after this. Everyone else after seemed lackluster compared to this. I believe even Brittney performed with that snake and it still did not top this and Janet was early 30s at this point completely crushing the little teeny boppers at the time.

One of the best. Ive never understood the dark colors. I wish she would have kept the same theme and colors of the video. Mtvs lighting was awful. I watched it live. It was hard to see. The rerun at 11 pm had the correction with better lighting.
