If you’ve ever seen the making of this video, she fell on her face twice but she got right back up and on her third try she got it. But she fell on her face directly on her face. This is why I love her so much because she’s dedicated to her craft.

You’re right Johnny. Janet came into this video showing us she was not about to play. She was really competing with her brother here as far as I’m concerned. I love that it is stripped of excess dancers and shows what she can do without any bells and whistles. Love this album and these moves.

As far as competing with Michael, I tend to think it was less sibling rivalry and more of her recognizing that she had to distance herself from him in a very *BOLD* way because he was making so much history in music and dance. Janet *_HAD to work even harder_* to set herself apart from someone just riding on his successes. We see her doing a spin just like Michael in the music video for _"What Have You Done for Me Lately"_ and using "Hee" on _"Don't Stand Another Chance" and "Control"_ but she stops all of that because she knows she has to be her own distinctive personality and while finding inspiration in his work wouldn't be questioned if she were just another fan, being one of his siblings she didn't want to be pegged as a copycat.

@@themirrorsofmymind Also like she stated on control getting out from under her parents, the worst thing would be to then succumb to the other "under" to always being referanced as michaels sister. she knew she had to become strong enough to be janet in her own right and she did that, no small feat. probably only showbiz sibling whos managed to do the same in that caliber of a shadow that comes to mind is solange although she obviously hasnt had the years in yet to have the staying power like janets career.

Janet's albums don't really drop off, she had decent catchy songs after the Super Bowl incident which would have done decently if she wasn't blacklisted. Her latest, Unbreakable album, was really good, would be a good one to listen too:)

👏👏👏👏 Preach it. It's amazing how many people don't know this and it's factual Janet said so that fat bastard at Viacom banned her from MTV, VH1 and a lot of her songs from radio stations which this company owned all across the United States. She should have sued

Only after Damita Jo her albums started to decline 20 Y.O. wasn't really a good album sad cause she was celebrating her 20 year old career since Control but her label dropped the ball with her and she switch labels her Discipline in my opinion is a good album and it's ahead of it's time as far as sounds go but it gets a bad rep and Unbreakable a masterpiece of album.

Janet has quite a few iconic videos: Rhythm Nation, When I Think of You, Alright, Come Back to Me, That's the Way Love Goes, Nasty, just to name a few. I remember when this video came out. It was the first time we really saw what an amazing dancer she was, as it showcased her dancing in a way that the other videos before it had not. The hair was fresh, her outfit was fresh, very little makeup, she didn't need backup dancers, and she was sexy without having to show skin. It's just badass.

I don’t believe her albums “dropped off” at all. Its common knowledge that the Super Bowl scandal had a lot to do with her being blacklisted and her albums not being promoted on radio. She has never released a bad record, even her very first two she released as a teenager , although heavily bubblegum pop , she had no creative control with those albums. The t shirt she is wearing is by Jean Paul Gaultier and the design on the front is said to be 1987 written in Russian .

OH HELL YES! IN EVERY WAY TO THIS! And yea pay people downing a part of catalog no mind, as a fan of artists with 30-50yr careers, nobody had a career of critical masterpieces every release, the brilliance when she's at her best makes her discography worth going through for the most part, and besides the albums it's the performances & tours & videos to enjoy as well & they've been consistent. And yes to answer your question what makes this video special & unique for its time is how stripped & laid back & natural it looks, it's about the dance & the song, for 1987 & for this to be a Control era video it's like nothing else, where the 80s is known for brightness & costumes, even her decision to opt for this hair vs. The variation of curly hair she had worn throughout the era is different, and then you have the fact that it's no background dancers. The key to the choreography of this video & every video/dance routine, Janet's always been the co-choreographer (it's something she shares with her brother in that regard). This was different too because Paula Abdul had previously choreographed 3 videos & some of her live performances, but Janet really wanted this one to look different, and to this day this along with NASTY are the 2 routines from the era that she still incorporates pieces of the original choreography. The funny thing with mentioning the chair & the hand for 5, this proceeds both Rhythm Nation & Miss You Much where those moves play apart (this was 87 to their 89). And yes truthfully this video has been mutually inspiring & getting things imitated or inspired by it for years. It's truly likely my favorite video of hers, & maybe the 1st that hooked me a certain way that I haven't been unhooked from yet lol.

Janet has a lot of fantastic videos, but this is still one of her best. The popularity of the video as far as I can tell has more to do with the laser focus on Janet Jackson alone and her dance talent. The hand and head move you point out was something that I think first came about in the 70s. MJ does it in the "Speed Demon" short film. So excited you're exploring Janet Jackson's catalogue! Things really do begin to fall apart after the epic run of Control, Rhythm Nation, janet., and Velvet Rope, but there are still gems to be found in the remaining albums. Especially her most recent, Unbreakable.

I was in love with Janet in the 80’s. Hell, I still am. Her album Control had a stranglehold on pop music, MTV and the radio in 1986 and didn’t relinquish until Michael’s release of Bad in 1987. This is one of my favorite songs and videos of hers. The best thing about this video is that it showcases her dancing skills in terms we could all relate to. Most of her videos were dance driven with elaborate group choreography. In the early days you can tell the one’s choreographed by Paula Abdul. This video was solo and I’m sure it was choreographed to a point as well. It just doesn’t look like it. That’s the point. She incorporates almost every street hip-hop dance of the day… Cabbage Patch, The Wop, The Fila, etc. She is amazing.

Not sure if you’re aware, that Paula Abdul was her choreographer for her Control album, not sure how much of the album, but I know for sure the Control video. I hope you’ll react to her video “When I think of You”, such a great song and also perfect Janet videos from the 80’s. That body her you did when she kicked the mic stand up was so adorable, it is pretty damn cool. ;)

The Fact that Michael was her brother , I truly think was the catalyst for her 10000% Commitment to stepping up her chops , all around. Her dancing skills, choreography, dedication to fitness, creative control and vocal control (she knew how to stay in her lane & not try outlandish Vocal gymnastics) Along with a Fanbase from her acting days , Then just add the fact that She's a JACKSON. All these parts sum up the Magic that is Janet, Or better yet MS. JACKSON ( U know Why 😉🤭) Her Discography doesn't really fall off but she had pursued other acting projects as well as The whole Superbowl Fiasco with Justin Timberlake got her (unfairly) Blackballed in the entertainment industry . Ultimately she stepped away to focus on her Marriage (now divorced)and moved to the middle east and had her Son. P.S. Whomever Says Bjork's albums slide down in quality are BLASPHEMERS & shouldn't be trusted to Water a Cactus 🤣🤣🤣🤭.

This was the 6th single from the album. The record company wasn’t planning to film a video for this song, but it started blowing up on radio stations and fans demanded a video. The song was out for a while before the video was hastily put together. This explains the simplicity of the video and why this song didn’t chart as high as other singles released from the album. Check out Deniece Williams if you haven’t heard of her. Her songs Free, Silly, it’s gonna take a miracle, and let’s hear it for the boy are good places to start.

I think the 80s gets a bad rap for being corny. But the fact is it that the 80s were very sophisticated and that’s why so much of the music videos fashions so much of what we had back then is so modern and badass to this day. Pick any Depeche Mode song or album for instance and try to hold up a modern selection to that.

Her catalog does everything but drop off, she had some awesome stuff that should have been Hits but her blacklisting in America was real she is still turned out #1 Albums on the Billboard charts but they're not giving her the radio play she deserves. She's a Living Legend, The Empress of Pop and The Blueprint, she commands alot more respect on her name. Beyonce, RiRi, Ciara wouldn't be here if it weren't Janet's shoulders that sit upon. That's just reality, so point being her newer recordings are everything that all those other girls have on the radio and hers are still better.

Janet Jackson is a great dancer.. so is Britney Spears, but you're not going to see them dance in a variety of styles... they are good at what they do.
